Optimal Intake of Prana (Life-Force) ~ Ayurvedic Anatomy and Physiology

The movement of air element Prana Vayu [life-force] located near the Nahbi (umbillicus), moves upward to the hrdaya (heart) and comes out of the throat to drink the VishnuPadAmrta ("nectar of the atmosphere” / oxygen), and haven partaken it moves quickly inside to enliven the entire body and kindle the Agni (digestive fire).

As fundamental as this physiological phenomena of intaking prana (life-force/oxygen) may seem, not everyone is doing it right. Everyone alive is certainly doing it (breathing), and doing so involuntarily, but a lot of people are not intaking a sufficient amount of quality Prana. This is due to blockages and “ama” (thick undigested materials) throughout the body.

Low and poor quality Prana can be a contributing factor to:

  • Migraines
  • Stroke
  • Eye diseases
  • Dizziness
  • Depression
  • "Mental tamas” (inertia)
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Auto-immune disorders
  • Neuro-degenerative diseases
  • Cognitive decline

But as the above shlohka (hymn/quote) from the famous ancient Ayurvedic treatise “Sarngadhara Samhita” says, it starts with “Nahbi”: Your Navel, the home of all connections which encompasses all the channels and current layout of your body. The home of the Enteric Nervous System (the largest nerve plexus) and your Svadhisthana (Sacral) Chakra.

Here are a few ways to optimise Prana

Nasya

Inhale oil up the nose followed by alternate nostril breathing technique (Nadi Shodana Pranayama) for 5-10mins, 1-3x/day.
