Bee Venom Therapy: Anti-Inflammatory, Immune Boosting Bee Stings

The other week a bee stung my eye lid within one minute after closing my eyes for sleep.

It was a prickly blessing that absolutely shocked the hell out of me as my tired body was excitingly ready to surrender to juicy rest.

Jumping out of my bed wondering WTF just did WTF to me!? I was wide awake.

And I wasn’t in the bush, I was in my familiar coastal city bedroom which I had not ever even witnessed flies buzzing inside.

But after turning the light on and finding a dead bee on my pillow, the shock turned into relief and gratitude for a blessing of intimacy with nature with a prick of medicine.

I was excited to receive my first dose of Bee Venom Therapy (BVT), and it was my eye health that first received the fortune.

Wide-Spread Tradition

Bee Venom Therapy has been used in folk medical systems across the globe through-out history. It involves holding a live bee against the area to be treated until a sting results.

Anti-Inflammatory

The venom includes around 40 currently identified compounds including it’s primary peptide, Mellitin, an anti-inflammatory agent that is reportedly one hundred times stronger than cortisone.

The venom also stimulates the adrenal glands to produce cortisol, contributing to the anti-inflammatory effect with the body’s innate mechanisms.

Immune Boosting

In addition, BVT jump starts the immune system to produce a healing response through the hypothalamus, pituitary, and adrenal glands, and pricks the production of endorphins, the body’s natural pain killer.

Anti-Bacterial and Anti-Viral

The antibacterial and antiviral properties of bee venom make it a unique weapon in fighting bacterial and viral ailments of the nervous system and other bodily channels and tissues.

Nerve Tissue Balancing

Perhaps one of the most remarkable characteristics of bee venom is it’s nerve balancing micro-cocktail

It contains neurotransmitters dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine, which along with the peptide apamin, facilitate nerve transmission (vata).

This quality of bee venom (vyavayi and vikashi gunas) grants it free access to pervade the minute neural pathways of the spine, blood brain barrier and areas of injury to help repair nerve damage and restore mobility.

Common Conditions Treated

Common conditions treated with Bee Venom Therapy include:

  • arthritis
  • sciatica
  • back pain
  • torn ligaments and tendons
  • chronic fatigue
  • MS
  • numbness.
  • and more...

Caution

Allergic reactions can be fatal.

Use of long-term and/or strong anti-inflammatory steroids may have compromised (suppressed) the adrenal and pituitary function to the point that bee venom therapy is contraindicated.

“The administration of steroids for a period exceeding two weeks runs the risk of suppression of the adrenal cortex....In people who take large doses of corticosteroids, the function of the adrenal glands will become suppressed. This suppression occurs because these large doses prevent the hypothalamus and pituitary glands from producing the hormones that normally stimulate adrenal function.”

The Good News

No need to be afraid of bee stings anymore! Embrace the free medicinal blessings. After my I got stung, I added my medicinally stinging Ayurvedic eye drops into my swollen eye for a couple of night and my eyes were radiating with tejas (precise acuity).

Turmeric: Highly Medicinal Spice & Essential Uses

Turmeric Roots

Turmeric (Curcuma Longa) is the most thoroughly researched plant on this planet!

And I don’t blame the scientists for the 5600 peer-reviewed and published biomedical studies.

Not another article listing countless benefits of turmeric, "I don't know where to start or what to use it for,"

Some of you may be thinking.

The bright orange rhizome deserves all these articles and documentation, but it can get a bit overwhelming.

In this article I will sum up the essentials and how to use Turmeric....

The average person in India eats about 2 to 2.5 grams of turmeric a day – almost every day of their lives. Interestingly, India has among the highest rates of prostate, breast, colon and lung health in the world. Some researchers credit turmeric for this.

The best part? Chances are, this spice may already be in your cabinet.

Turmeric has a vast catalogue of health benefits, but here is an

Essential Summary of the Benefits of Turmeric:

• Anti Inflammatory - best anti-inflammatory along with ginger.
• Mood Regulating - In one study, curcumin (the active ingredient that is so heavily researched), was shown to boost the brain chemical norepinephrine, which supports healthy mood, attentiveness, sleep, dreaming and higher learning.
• Curcumin also boosted the levels of dopamine – the “motivation” hormone that supports pleasure, emotion, satisfaction and locomotion – and serotonin, which plays a key role in mood, memory, learning, appetite, sexual behaviour, sleep, and many other functions.
• Protects Gut - Turmeric creates coating around gut area for protection. This prevents toxins from absorbing and will assist the bile in detoxifying toxins like heavy metals, parasites, pesticides, candida, fungi and more. This decongests the lymphatic system.
• Reproductive Nourishment: Breast milk purifier, sperm builder and nourishes reproductive organs.
Joint Support - It can reduce stiffness and swelling and strengthens joints in cases of joint pain. People with arthritis should be eating plenty turmeric daily.
• Healthy blood - blood purifier, enhances blood flow and can thin blood. Supports liver function.

Boost Absorption: Simply Add a Little Black Pepper:

Researchers found that turmeric taken with black pepper – both common ingredients in curry – increased the absorption of turmeric by an astonishing 2000%! with no adverse effects!

How to Use Turmeric as Medicine:

  • Turmeric Powder is indicated over fresh turmeric because it is more purified and easier to digest. Fresh turmeric can be used but less than 3x a week in teas, stir fries etc. You may use fresh turmeric more if it is purified with limestone.
  • Add at the end of cooking - Curries, stir fires, meat roasts, eggs, dahls, salads, really any savoury meal calls for turmeric. Add the powder towards the end of cooking to savour all the nutrients and healing properties. A general rule is to add powdered spices at the end of cooking (except hing).
  • Anti-Viral Paste - Mix up this paste if a cough, cold/flu or virus hits you or when you feel one coming on. Step in early! Recipe here.
  • Meat - As meat is vulnerable to acquiring infections and cancerous bacteria, turmeric with its anti-cancer properties is vital to add to the cooking of meat.
  • Boosts Oil Pulling - Add a pinch turmeric powder to 1tsp of sesame oil and swish in mouth for a stronger anti-bacterial action and to heal bleeding gums.
  • Golden Milk - Mix turmeric with hot milk + other necessary spices. This promotes sleep, reduces stress, purifies breast milk amongst many more benefits. Recipe here.

External Uses:

Turmeric is popular among many beauty and skin products. Here are some home remedies and uses. Just be careful as it can stain anything it touches.

  • Disinfectant - Mix turmeric with a little ghee, butter or honey (enough to make a paste) and you have a paste to apply on cuts and wounds. Turmeric doesn't only disinfect the wound (it looks just like Betadine), but also heals it. This is a great mixture to have on hand in the first aid kit.
  • Anti-itch - Eczema, psoriasis, vitiligo, any skin condition or where itching is present apply turmeric + butter or yoghurt paste to cool down the skin and relieve the itching. This also heals the skin condition.
  • Face Mask - Purifying face mask to sterilise and draw out or pacify pimples, blackheads and oily secretions. A general mask to nourish and rejuvenate the skin.
Recipe: mix 2 Tbsp chana flour (chickpea) +1 tsp turmeric powder + 3 tsps milk. Apply on face and lie down until mask dries, then wash off. Can also use as skin exfoliator before shower.
  • Skin-Cancer - Helps protects from and help heal skin cancers.

Properties:

Rasa (taste): Pungent, bitter
Virya (action): Heating
Vipaka (post-digestive effect): Pungent
Doshas: Balances vata, pitta and kapha

Summary:

Simply, turmeric should be used daily in your cooking (with a pinch of black pepper). Further, get to know its potent medicinal components more by utilising the powerful powder for home remedy medical applications.

External “Basti” – A Unique and Effective Musculoskeletal Treatment

A whopping 80% of Australians and Americans experience back pain.
1 in 7 Australians report back problems.

Unfortunately many folks have become accustomed to this discomfort, and this dull body becomes the norm and they don’t recognise this as an issue, nor act on it. Their cells have lost  the memory of a free and healthy body that is their natural state and their brith right.

This method to treat musculo-skeletal disorders is unique from any other methods out there today.

This keeps getting restated at Vital Veda through the astonishing results we get from patients who undergo this treatment. Some who have lived with pain or discomfort for years and tried so many other therapies.

Other treatment approaches, conventional or alternative medicine, all certainly have relevance and may even be used in congruence with this treatment.

Treatment Process:

  • Firstly a massage is performed over the target site to activate the tissues and prepare the body to openly invite the basti to do its work.
  • Medicated, analgesic oil is “held” by a well (made from flour), localised over the targeted site.
  • The practitioner maintains the oil at a comfortably hot temperature so the oil and the herbs in it can penetrate all layers of skin, deep into tissues of muscle, fat (includes ligaments and tendons), bone, bone marrow and nerves.
  • Stiff and tight muscles will instantly be lubricated and softened. This solves the problems of many issues such as:

Nerve Pain, Slipped Discs, Sciatica, Back Pain:
Pathology (Samprapti):

  • When muscles get stiff, they loose the ability to expand and contract.
  • Here nerves get compressed and conduction does not pass freely.
  • The energy of movement (Vata) is obstructed and will try to create path with force, thus pain.
  • This may cause a disk to bulge and slip.
  • When the intervertebral disc slips, nerves will touch edges and produce pain. Sometimes manipulation (e.g. soft or deep tissue massage) treatment will tear tissues and can pinch nerves even more.

Solution:

A back Basti counters the roughness, dryness, stiffness and tightness, allowing conduction to pass uninterruptedly, totally free from one neuron to the other.

“I had pain and troubles with my knees for quite a while. At one point I was in excruciating pain for 2 weeks, waiting for Dylan to get back from travel. After just 3 of these treatments, the pain is almost completely gone..I haven’t felt the way I feel, in a hell of a long time.”
~ Sandy during a Janu (Knee) Basti series.

“I recently attended Vital Veda for a series of Janu Basti  (Knee Basti). After suffering with discomfort in my knees and calves for as long as I could remember, the tension and pain has incredibly disappeared since having this treatment. Dylan is learned, thoughtful and combines the treatment with a holistic approach to wellness management. Will be returning for future treatments ASAP!”
~ Justin

“Dylan is a dedicated talented Ayurvedic practitioner who studied under the renowned Raju family in India. He has access to high quality special herbs and traditional Indian medicine. I had lower back issues and completed a series of 7 Basti’s which included massage with medicated oils. The quality of the treatment , the setting , even down to the relaxing whale music, made it a very special experience. Not only has it alleviated my back pain but also gave me a rejuvenated psychological boost.
I don’t hesitate to recommend Dylan who can offer other high quality Ayurvedic treatments that will make you feel on the top of the world. I actually attended a brief mini panchakarma session for a week in India with Bastis but found Dylan’s Bastis to be more effective, this might have to do with his strong healing energy, his intention and use of quality medicated oils.
I only met Dylan through Ayurvedic treatments so sincerely give this review with utmost truthfulness and hope you try it out for yourself, happy healing.”
~ Trevor after a series of “back Basti’s”

Eggplant – Feature Food

Indian Eggplants
“Eggplant is the King of Vegetables, because it is the only vegetable that has a crown.”
Vaidya Dr. B.A. (Father) Raju

Purification of Foods and Herbs

All foods and herbs should be first purified to clean them and enhance the potency. It is the transformation process of all herbs and foods which is essential for safe and effective use. No point of taking ‘super foods’ in high quantity and quality if it is not prepared the right way. Even one highly medicinal herb in Ayurveda, if not purified specifically by boiling it in milk, will cause cancer. Most simple and common purification method is washing with water.

To purify eggplant

Soak in salt water for about 20mins, then pour out the black water (impurities). Then it is ready to be cooked. Eggplant can also be roasted to counter the Slimy quality.

Medicinal effect

Great for thyroid health.

Caution

Can aggravate skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis as well as joint issues like rheumatoid arthritis.

Size Matters

I will let you in on a secret. The more tender, smaller, younger the eggplant, the more medicinal. This prevents the vegetable from developing the doshas (energies in the vegetable that causes vitiation in the body tissues). Often people at the markets leave the smaller eggplants behind!

A Clean Vegetable

Although it is always best to eat organic whenever possible for safety, health and to please our microbes in our gut even more, eggplant bears little to no traces of pesticides and is safe to consume in non-organic form.(1)

Enjoy eggplant in season!

photo: my favourite type of Eggplant. Field to Feast, NSW grows and sells them with a lot of love, thus promotes positive microbiology in the food simply through loving and positive organic farming!
