About Our Guest: Angela Heap

Angela is a Nutritionist with 12 years experience in fertility and pregnancy.
She runs a successful London based clinic and works internationally with clients.
Angela lectures on Fertility and Pregnancy for the British College of Nutritional Health, The British Association and The College of Naturopathic Medicine where she studied in 2005 and now trains Nutritional Therapists on how to use functional tests.

Angela also collaborates regularly with a UK Based genetic testing company LifecodeGX to present on female health and genes incorporating Dutch testing.

Angela Heap

Angela recently took part and lectured to peers in the Fertilty Masterclass which represented an in depth look into fertility for practitioners. She also represents labs in the UK on interviews on fertility.

In 2018 she presented on clinical fertility as part of one of the biggest international conference sponsored by UK labs Regenerus on Fertility and Pregnancy with prominent International Gynaecologists, Paediatricians, Doctors and Naturopathic Doctors in their field in ‘ The Gestational Journey’ in London. In 2019 she presented on Male Fertility at the International Congress of Nutritionist in Croatia. Angela is a speaker at the UK Fertility Show in the UK, and regularly collaborates with Urologists and Gynaecologists in the UK. Her area of special interest is multiple miscarriages,  IVF, Genetics, PCOS and Thyroid health. She has been interviewed for podcasts and has taken part in many fertility summits over the years.  She also writes for magazines on Fertility and pregnancy.

The Power of Mother Divine and “Navaratri” and How to Access Its Regenerative Energy

"Divinity blossoms where woman are respected."
Manu Smriti (ancient Ayurvedic text on gynaecology)

In the Vedic calendar there are a few times in the year when the collective invokes the Mother Divine aspects of consciousness.

Mother Divine or Universal Mother is commonly referred to in the Vedas as "Durga" (remover of miseries), "Devi" (goddess) or "Shakti" (feminine energy or infinite power)

There are many ways to invoke the Mother Divine in us and in the collective.

Aspects of Mother Divine

  • Gracefulness, elegance.
  • Invincibility, capability.
  • Feminine counterpart of the "destruction operator" in nature. - Like a stern mother ensuring we are following the laws of nature, or else, some destruction will occur to shake us up.
  • The Divine personality known as 'Durga' (pictured) sits on her tiger with infinite arms holding shining weapons ready to slay the demons. This is expressive of the capability of pure Being (infinite arms) to dissolve (slay) negativity, stress and disease (demons).

These aspects of consciousness are referred to as Durga in the Veda.

  • Abundance.
  • Increase of flow.
  • Choosing the higher value of behaviour over the lower value of behaviour.
  • Having every resource at the tip of your fingers. Because they align to the value of which nature is desiring for you and the universe.
  • It is our natural-born heritage to be abundant. If mother nature is abundant, then we are.

These aspects of consciousness are referred to as Lakshmi in the Veda.

  • Music, arts, culture.
  • Feminine aspect of creation - the force of Natural Law (prakriti) that creates all expressed values on the basis of pure intelligence (Purusha).
  • Education and knowledge. Personification of divine knowledge.

These aspects of consciousness are referred to as Saraswati in the Veda.

  • Infinite adaptability and infinite organising power. (Shakti)
  • Nourishing, nurturing, protecting. (Devi)

Navaratri: Times of the Year to Access Infinite Regenerative Energy

Every year, a special Vedic celebration is honoured called Navaratri. 

"Nav(a)" = Nine.
"Ratri" = Night.

The festival "Navratri" is the 9 Nights of Mother Divine. This is an opportunity to join masses all over the world in invoking the energy aspect of mother divine.

When is Navaratri: Seasonal & Astrological Significance

There are actually 4x Navaratris each year. They come in the midst of seasonal transition (rtu sandhi) , giving us the opportunity to reset, let go, purify, rejuvenate, and move into the next phase of our life with greater lightness and ease.

There are two main Navratris to counter-balance the seasons that are associated with sickness and death:
Vasanta (Spring) and Sarat (Autumn) in India.

These seasons are called "Death's Teeth" (Yama Danta) because it is when the world is unstable. Spring is detoxifying what accumulated in the winter and autumn is purifying the accumulations and acid from the rainy season.

Furthermore, these two Navratris come at thresholds of the northern solstice (Uttarayana, Agneya) and southern solstice (Dakshinayana, Saumya).

It is at these times that us as a society have special need for grace, and so the Devi’s Navaratri, the Vasanta (spring) and Sarat (autumn) Navratri, are observed as times for special prayer and regeneration.

The "main" Navratri that is most celebrated and auspicious is Sarat Navarati, which takes place after the autumn monsoon and the autumn harvest (which in Australia is our Spring). It begins on the first day of the bright fortnight of the lunar month of Ashwini.

It is around September / October each year and changes according to the lunar calendar and the planetary alignments to align with Nature's powerful, rejuvenating and evolutionary cycles, rhythms and energies.

Ways to Invoke the Mother Divine:

(for both females, males and all gender-identifications to invoke)

  • Place your awareness on the aspects of mother divine in you, people you know and that which permeates throughout the world. This is good to practice while you are in your most de-excited state (after meditation and yoga for example).
  • When spending time with the people in your life, especially the women that are close to you, immerse in relationships with more honour, gratitude and love for the feminine divinity that emanates through that individual. Whatever you place your attention on grows. Allow that divinity to blossom and permeate! (This "Shakti" also certainly emanates through males).
  • Chant or listen to mantras specific to mother divine.
  • Attend ceremonies, celebrations and pujas with a specific focus on the mother divine.
  • Perform the more specific rituals and rites that are outlined by the Rishi's (seers), gurus and in the ancient texts. Check your local Hindu temple, vedic community or pundit (Vedic Priest). In Sydney, I attend ceremonies with Pundit Sudheer Sharma and all over the world - online with Pundit Baskaran.
  • Make the nine days a little retreat - honour yourself with more self-care and time by doing more dinacharya (Ayurvedic daily routine), sadhana (practice to attune yourself with nature), yoga,  extended meditation programs (according to your meditation technique/program).
  • For Navarati October 17th-25th - sponsor special Vedic fire ceremonies, known as 'Yagya', that take place in India over the 9 nights.

Ayurveda's View on Woman's Wellbeing

In Ayurveda, the woman's health and wellbeing is pivotal for not only the health and happiness of the family, but to the whole society and even the nation at large. Their wellbeing is a core influence that ripples throughout their (larger than you think) vicinity.

Woman's healthcare is a priority. From menarche (start of menstrual cycle) to pre-conception, to pregnancy, to menopause - the woman's health plays a major influence on the health of the people around her.

The destiny of the world lies in the hands of women. Women is the creator. She has beauty, charm, grace and wisdom. She has her hand in the hand of God. Woman is at the top of creation. This is her place and her Dharma, and this she must never loose, for if she does, there will be wars, suffering and cruelty, because she is the opposite of all these things. The nervous system of a woman is by nature more refined and much more delicate. She is the first to sense the good, the pure, the beautiful, the divine. By nature, man is more gross. His position is to deal with the world, so he must be able to deal with stress. Woman is balance, a balance of all nature. She takes in all the stress of her husband and children and does not pass it on. Must not pass it on. Healing is in the lap of the mother; she heals the child's soul. Her place is to see that man goes for higher consciousness. The love of mother that comes through the hands of every woman is Mother Divine. A woman should not get so tired. Her structure is for finger things.

A Time For Transformation

The 9-days of Navrati represent the 9 months a baby spends in a mother’s womb. During Navratri, our consciousness evolves everyday from tamas (inertia, delusion) to sattva (purity, awakening).

  • The initial step is to get rid of all the countless impurities (Kali).
  • Then acquire virtues and auspicious and divine qualities (Lakshmi).
  • Thus purified, knowledge flashes upon you like the brilliant rays of the sun in crystal waters of a perfectly calm lake (Saraswati).

This process can take a lifetime or more. It can also be fast tracked and experienced in a big hit during these 9 days, Navratri, by allowing the Divine Mother to operate though us.

Night provides rest and rejuvenation. During the night, you turn inwards through sleep, and you wake up feeling refreshed and rested in the morning. In the same way, Navaratri or the ‘nine nights’ is that time of the year when you get the chance to experience deep rest. This deep rest brings freedom from all kinds of bothers, and brings deep relaxation and creativity.

Garbha Sambhava Samagri

“Fetus forming ingredients”

  1. Rtu - ideal season, in terms of fertile period in a woman. Ideal climate in the garbhashaya (uterus and fallopian tubes) for the sperm to fertilise the ovum.
    • Sperm should enter the uterus a couple of days before ovulation. Ovulation is the release of egg or ovum from the ovary in woman.
    • Dvadasaratram: Day 12 when artava is manifested. Days 12-16 (fertile period) is the ideal kala for conception.
    • If not fertilised, the ovum gets distorted.
    • As lotus flower closes positively when the day is over, a woman's uterus contracts after the period of conception is over (thus, does not receive the seed).” S.S. Sarira Sthana, Ch 2.
  2. Kshetra - Fertile land. Mother. Healthy womb (uterus).
    • Good land for implantation to occurs. Implantation: the ovum which is coming towards to uterus following ovulation meets the sperm. Then fertilisation occurs. The fertilised ovum (sukra shonita) now comes into the uterine cavity and gets adhered in to the wall of the uterus.
    • Now, uterus is home for the garbha and growing foetus until it gets matured until delivery.  The first home of all living beings.
    • Treat diseases related to the uterus before conception so a healthy women allows for proper implantation.
  3. Ambu - Proper water supply for the land.
    • Rasa dhatu to supply nutrient for the foetus.
    • To create this: PK, shodana, nasika, pranayama, asana, ensuring spine is in good position always.
    • If this rasa to the garbha is cut off, the foetus doesn’t grow properly or one can find stunted growth or mal-formation.
    • Foetal circulation - the exchange centre of the two bloods of mother and foetus is the Jarayu (placenta). The circulation takes place trough the blood vessels of the mother drain and receiving through the umbilical cord of the foetus (nahbi) via the umbilical cord.
  4. Bija - healthy seed.

  • They may have more stress, and fluctuating hormones.

Ayurvedic Guide to Healthy Menstruation

Menstruation is an important gift and a blessing for women.

Every month, women have a unique opportunity to purity their body and cultivate physical and creative energy (known as "shakti" in Ayurveda), for the month ahead. It is like pulling back the bow to launch into life with vitality.

It is to common that medications, whether it be drugs or herbs, are prescribed to attempt to balance the menstrual cycle. However, all one may need is awareness of this natural stage in life and how-to live-in harmony with it.

Ayurvedic Program for Menstruation

Take time off. REST

During the period of menstruating, activities are best reduced to what is essential so that the body, mind and blood flow can reserve all its energy in the pelvic floor. The body, mind and spirit may flow in accord with the natural rhythms moon and 27 constellations (Naksatras).

Resting the physical body in regard to exercise, movements and travel, ushers the downward flow of energy and blood to purify effortlessly.

Resting the mind from activities like studying, mental work and stress allows the energy and blood flow to move in a downward direction.

This is the time of the month to schedule less work.

This is why men need to be educated about this powerful time for women, because it is this time of the month that they should be taking responsibility for more home chores, shopping, cooking and taking care of the kids.

  • If one is unable to rest for the whole period, one should take rest for at least the first 1-2 days.
  • Do not sleep during the day – This promotes sluggishness, poor circulation and blocks the channels. If you are undergoing Banana Purification, it is okay to sleep during the day.
  • Take it easy - Mental activity and psychical activity reduced. Especially 1st day when heavy bleeding is happening, take day off.  Avoid running and excessive exercise, laughing, hearing loud sounds (loud music, crowded places).

Retreating from the normal routine and everyday activities and stressors is necessary so that you may remain mindful of the great transformational experience of shedding the lining of the uterus (endometrium) so that it can be renewed once more.

Be Within Yourself

The menstrual period is a gifted time to naturally slow down. Attune yourselves to go more inward. Maintain positivity during this period.

This helps balance the colon, bladder and hormones.

Vata Pacifying Regimes

  • Keep yourself warm, happy (chocolate not required for happiness) more oily foods (ghee).
  • Handle cravings comfortably – Some women naturally crave salt or sugar during this period. Try balance salt cravings, and if sugar cravings persist, a glass of hot water or warm milk with spices is an option.

Reduce Bathing

  • No baths, light shower is ideal.
  • Not cold or hot water, just luke warm – cold is good.
  • Shower is best skipped on first day and can be avoided during the whole period.

Why less bathing?

  • Activates lymphatic system (like parishek treatment). Also distributes energy to peripheral tissues (skin), when it should be preserved in apana vayu (pelvic floor) for the purification period.
  • Vata is prevalent during this time. Vata is dark, cold, excessively moves, erratic and ungrounded. The body at this times needs to be kept protected, cared for, grounded and stabilised with the least degree of intrusion so that the necessary discharge can be pulled by its own rhythm and completed without interruption.

No Swimming or Washing Hair During the Menstrual Cycle

  • We need to safeguard the body against the persuasive rhythm of the water element.
  • Water is one of the five powerful elements used to bless, cure, heal, nourish, nature and revive the body, mind and spirit. Water is sacred, powerful and has its own cosmic energy.
  • Water, guided by this cosmic energy, can influence the flow of the menstrual cycle to an exacerbated flow, like the calm, peaceful, smooth flowing body of water can turn into a tsunami, avalanche, hurricane or storm.
  • We want the fire element - the metaboliser and governor of blood, to flow in temp with its own rhythm and tune.

Diet

  • Simple warm, cooked and light food. Avoid meat.
  • Mono-diet as much as possible.
  • Milk rice is great, especially for those woman who have uncomfortable and rough periods..
  • No cold foods or drinks.

Avoid Constipation

Constipation can happen because your body’s elimination focus goes more towards the menstruation. To counter this:

    • Shodana Vati
    • Vata Pacifying regimes.
    • Do not suppress any natural urges, (burps, farts, defecation, urination, yawning, sneezing, etc.)
    • Drink 2-3 cups of hot-warm water in early morning.

No Sexual Activity

This probably will aggravate the colon, bladder and hamper normal flow. We want the blood to be focused on staying in the pelvic region (apana vayu).  During this time, we don't want anything up the vagina as this will block the flow of energy.

Intercourse during menstruation is considered the most inauspicious act according to Ayurveda. (Source: Caraka S, S.S)

No Self-Massage/Abhyanga

For the same reason as not bathing. Applying some oil as a moisturiser is fine.

Exercise

Nothing more than a 30 minute light walk (at least).

Light walk daily is great.

Hygiene

Tampons block the free passage and clear flow of menstrual flow. It aggravates Apana Vayu (the pelvic floor seat of Vata). Thus are not advised.

Only external organic absorbent pads should be used.
We recommend re-usable organic pads or organic period underpants.

Avoid Combing Hair and Cutting Nails

Grooming hair and nails is for times of extrovert. The vedas says women who cuts nails or hair during her period will promote her future offspring to have bone issues.

Avoid Gardening, Cooking and Being Near the Preparation of Food During the Menstrual Cycle

  • This is not due to the irrational thinking that menstrual blood is unclean, unhygienic or toxic.
  • Food and plant life is imbued with prana - a rising energy flowing up from the earth towards the sun and sky.
  • In contrast, the menstrual blood is instilled with apana vayu, the downward-flowing, bodily air pulled from the body by the magnetic forces of the earth.
  • These two powerful roles of nature do not harmonise together.
  • Plant-derived food is also Kapha in nature, earth element full of youth-giving energy that nourishes and builds the body (anabolic action).
  • Menstrual blood is dominated by Pitta and Vata, which fosters cleansing of the body and spirit and reduces tissues (catabolic).
  • It is unwise to introduce the rising, energising nature of food into the menstrual blood, or to mix the downward-flowing, cleansing energy of blood into our sustenance - including preparing food or eating heavy foods during the menstrual cycle.

What is the Microbiome

Mitochondria

  • Ancient microbes
  • Modern mitochondrial insults - nnEMF, chemicals, air pollution, artificial lighting, unclean water, over consumption of sugar.
  • Damaged mitochondria leads to poor immunity.

GABA in the Gut

  • Gamma-Aminobutyric acid - an amino acid produced by the brain.
  • Chief inhibitory neurotransmitter.
  • Reducing neuronal excitability - relaxation, reduces stress, increases calm, balances mood, alleviates pain and helps with sleep. - “The brakes of the brain.”
  • Responsible for the regulation of muscle tone.
  • Food sources - Kefir, yoghurt, whole grain, walnuts, almonds, citrus, berries, spinach, broccoli.

Seratonin

A study showed 95% of serotonin production occurs in the gut.

5-hydroxytryptamine receptors or 5-HT receptors, or serotonin receptors are derived from the gut.

Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) inhibits 5-HT re-uptake (reabsorption of the neurotransmitter - important because it allows for recycling of neurotransmitters and how their release lasts).

Dopamine

Responsible for cognitive functions such as decision making, attention, memory, motivation, and reward.

A study showed how Dopamine is produced in the gut by showing a "considerable urinary excretion of dopamine metabolites indicates that large amounts of dopamine are produced in unknown locations of the body."

Microbes affect how people metabolise these compounds, regulating the amount that circulates in the blood and brain.

Enteric Nervous System

  • Second brain. Located in the gut. A nervous system the size of a cats brain. All your nerve plexuses end in your gut.
  • Modulated peristalsis, going to the toilet.
  • Everything starts from umbilicus.

Butyrate / Butyric Acid and Leaky Gut

  • From butyric acid - a health beneficial short chain fatty acid.
  • It got its name from the latin word for butter, butyrum.
  • Your gut bacteria produces butyrate from prebiotic fibres in plant foods. Specifically clostridium butyricum.
  • While is was first discovered in butter, ghee is the highest source of this superfood.
  • Reduces anxiety and depression. Provides neuro-protective effects.
  • Helps digestion by maintaining integrity of the GI mucosa and gut lining.
    • Can plug a leaky gut.
    • Intestinal permeability - in a healthy barrier, tight functions are relaxed allowing water and nutrients to pass through.
    • It is the main energy source for colonocytes, the cells which make up your gut lining. - Unlike other cells in the body which use glucose (sugar) as the main energy source.
    • Colonocytes help provide an oxygen-free environment in which beneficial gut microbes thrive.
  • Inhibits growth of unwanted bacteria in the gut and interfered with the growth of toxic bacteria.
  • Anti-inflammatory.
  • Encourages growth of the beneficial bacteria like Bifidobacterirum.
  • Supports and regulates healthy bowel motions.
  • Supports the health of intestinal mucosa during inflammatory bowel conditions.
  • Supports health cholesterol.
  • Increases cellular energy production.
  • Reduction in fatty tissue and hunger levels.

Triggers for leaky gut

Improve tight junctions in the gut lining

  • Two types: Milk Kefir and Water Kefit (vegan).
  • How to Make: Simply add 1tsp of kefir grains into a glass of 250ml milk, leave for 24 hours and strain. Then pass the yoghurt through a sieve, and keep the kefir grains for next time.
  • What are Kefir grains - symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast. Scientists can’t replicate the grains in labs. People replicate and share the grain amongst each other.
  • They replicate. Kriben hypothesises they found the the kefir grains in a stomach (biofilm) of a goat. Water kefir grains come from a type of cactus.
  • Around 15 strains of bacteria in water kefir.

The Vedic View on Mediums & Spirit Communicators

I respect “The Medical Medium (Anthony Williams),” I think his story is interesting and amazing, and I validate that the information he shares with the public is coming from “Spirit.”

I also support what he is sharing because it is helping the collective heal naturally.

However, I have always found the medical advice, particularly the treatment recommendations, rather ineffective and weak, (and of course non-individualised).

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s view on mediums explains why…

“There are some who try to use the supernatural power of creation by contacting the spirits world through a medium or by invoking spirits.

This represents a very limited level of strength because no spirit is in possession of the total power of nature.

There may be spirits more powerful than man, but invoking these spirits or acting as a medium for them is not a practice to be encouraged. There are two reasons for this:

  1. The power gained through these spirits is an insignificant, infinitesimal fraction of the poor of almighty nature;

  2. To receive this fraction of the power of nature one must give oneself completely to that spirit’s influence (for the spirit to co-operate).

Instead of giving oneself completely to a spirit and only gaining a small amount of power, one should give oneself completely to the divine Being (such as through meditation) and gain the unlimited, almighty power of nature.”

Thus, I have always valued more and found way more powerful the medical protocols provided by my Gurus, who are Ayurvedic doctors that are particularly well established in Being (at high levels of consciousness), thus have access to the unlimited, almighty power of nature which they implement in their Ayurvedic medicine.

Sting vs. Non Sting

  • What determines a bee stinging someone or leaving them.

  • Don’t use glyphosate.

Heated Honey Is Poison

Any temperature above 37 degrees Celsius applied to honey renders is poison.

  • In 2008, the US did something about it.
  • The largest food fraud case in the US history. When the German company imported Russian honey that was tested as Chinese honey. Alfred F Wolf, hamburg based.
  • Purchase Order 995. “Polish Light Amber Honey.”
  • A PO for polish honey.
  • Lab tests identified this honey was adulterated with a prohibited anti-biotic, Chloramphenicol. Fed to bees to keep them healthy. Can be fatal for people who eat it. That is why it is illegal in the US to import food products that contain it.
  • 82 – 95% of the honey he was retaking into the US was part of a scheme.
  • Honey testing lab in Germany. Germany is the second biggest consumer after USA.
