In This Episode We Discuss

Exploring the infinite possibilities and capabilities of life and taking action

  • You either do something fully or not.
  • It is possible and I’m interested.
  • We don’t discern if it’s difficult or easy, we just do it.
  • Learn to make the uncomfortable comfortable and expand the bounders of experience in the gross dimensions of reality so that the yoga.

Jonni has has explored a diverse range of abilities in this lifetime.

Jonni being seduced by the notion of being a recluse.

How can I make whomever I come into contact with have the truest experience of themselves by virtue of them being in my presence

All that requires if for me to be in myself fully.

People are confronted by the potential of their power, and it is generally resisted because of an underlying sense of unworthiness.

The power of the pain and memory of the past.

People prefer to maintain a certain level of suffering, rather than the idea of diving into the fear and confronting it.

The sum total of the weight of our collective suffering is the very thing that keeps us entrenched in the extraordinary destructive dysfunction that is happening on the planet now.

And The only way we can liberate ourselves from the potential outcome of annihilation is to discover the abode of love indie of use and make it our homeland evict anything that is not able to surrender at the feet of love.

Anxiety

The charge of energy that doesn’t have a grounding. Like an electrical wire that doesn’t have a grounding. It is wild and can run anywhere and inappropriately fills lines of energy that don’t require or need to receive that charge. Misdirected energy.

Establishing yourself to your Self to the extent that the earth is established in herself.

Forces of energy and electro-magnetic frequencies creating a distortion on our planet that invariably have an impact on us human beings.

The Cause of Every Single Disease

Becoming diligent in self-correction of the intellect.

Turning to the condition of the body for the tendency to ignore.

We are living in extraordinary unprecedented times.

Methods to pacify anxiety:

  • Grounding - barefoot on earth, swimming in ocean and bodies of water.
  • Sun exposure.
  • Human to human contact. “Heart to heart.” - Create a circuitry of frequencies and resonate. We are such a powerful remedy for each other.
  • Self-abhyanga.
  • Get busy - work, do seva (service).

Give your attention generously wherever you feel there is a deficit.

The quality of our attention established in Being has a nourishing effect that causes a flexibility and dynamism in somebody’s personality to open up and connect.

It is moistening the dryness in the branches of our being.

How to help others who experience anxiety and nourish their existence and spirit.

Psychology or psychotherapy is a very long arduous task.
Reaching the masses vs. closer communities through your service.
The mentality of trying to be the biggest, best or most well known.
Attempting to spread knowledge and do service at a large scale at the detriment of yourself and the knowledge.

Finding the balance of sufficient rest, work and play.

Leadership

  1. Having the vision.
  2. Articulating the vision.
  3. Empowering others to allow that vision to come into fruition.
  4. Primary role: the intimate relationship with team members and identifies what is required for them to truely feel empowered.

Be gentle and tender on yourself and when you see somebody else in need of that, be generous with your tenderness.

The importance of normalising meditation in society.

The Light Diet, Quantum Health & Circadian Rhythms | Matt Maruca {Podcast #021}

In Defense of Sunlight: How the transition to indoor living created the epidemic of modern chronic disease.

About Matt Maruca

Matt Maruca founded Ra Optics to make the world's finest blue light blocking glasses, and created The Light Diet, a diet that directly addresses the root of the modern chronic disease epidemic, mitochondrial dysfunction, after having suffered from poor health and chronic fatigue at a young age due to technology overuse and an indoor lifestyle. He is now 20 years old and travels the world, studying and teaching about the relevance of light in human health.

The Light Diet: Matts Prescription for Health

Going beyond just food and nutrition.

Prioritising the engines of our cells (mitochondria) over the fuel (food) we are putting into them.

Focusing on the effects of light on our mitochondria determines how we process our food.

Herodot: The First Man to Get an Idea about Vitamin D

Herodot was travelling the Mediterranean area in the 6th Century BC and came across the graveyards of the Battle of Pelusium in 525 BC.

He noticed Egyptian skull bones were much thicker and robust compared to those of the Persians, which you could easily break with a small stone.

Reason is the different use of sunlight. Egyptians shaved their hair in addition to praying to the sun and having hot native tans. The Persians wore big hats to protect themselves from the sun.

There was a connection between sunlight and the strength of bones. Later we came to know this as vitamin D.

Why humans are a bare (hairless skin) animals

Why did we loose our hair after evolving from apes? Perhaps so our skin could be a solar panel to assimilate sunlight.

DHA – The Most Important Fat

Docosahexaenoic acid is a type of omega-3 fat that supports brain function, eye health, reduces inflammation and risk of chronic disease, such as heart disease.

How do vegans and vegetarians get DHA?

Consider the Bazan effect discovered by Nicholas Bazan.

Two loops in our eye – one dissociates DHA and recycles it our eye. We conserve it.

The long loop connects the eye to the liver. If that gets broken liver can replenish that.

Those in artificial light + EMF loose innate DHA so will have to replenish with high DHA food sources like seafood.

There is smaller amounts of DHA in meat and dairy and the amount in plants are negligible.

Mercury in Seafood

Avoid seafood high in mercury:

  • Those high up in the food chain
  • Tuna
  • Kingfish
  • Raw fish
  • Farmed fish.

Detox by spending time in the sun and implementing certain herbs.

Do You Really Think The Sun Causes Skin Cancer?

The dominant belief today is that UV light causes melanoma (associated with skin cancer).

Melanoma incidence has risen 23 times from 1935-2012, but dermatologists can’t put their finger on what is causing the current surge.

The ironic thing is, skin cancer rates are getting higher while people are getting exponentially less sun and using more sunscreen.

Let us find out why the surge in melanoma is occurring and learn from society’s lifestyle habits so that we can take control of our health and avoid falling into the category of chronic disease.

This article aims to break the highly misunderstood belief that the sun is a dangerous carcinogen and expose the TRUTH. It is a big step for those to correct their intellect because the majority have been brainwashed to not be able to think clinically and not question authority.

I invite you to learn for your self. Use logic and explore the science. Radical action is required to break social conditioning and learn the truth with an open mind to supersede a fallacy that is so strongly embedded in the poor brains of the majority. That same majority are getting inflicted with chronic disease (including melanoma). Check out the science and statistics then decide for yourself.

How the Theory that the Sun Causes Cancer Arose

The studies that showed UV (Ultraviolet) radiation causes skin cancer were done on nocturnal animals who lived their lives in a toxic nnEMF (non-native electro-magnetic field) environment, under artificial blue light on artificial grounds.

We are the only species that have taken ourselves away from water and natural materials. Every other species constantly and regularly touches water and/or earth.

So when you take a nocturnal animal, such as a rat, away from nature, keep them in an artificial environment inundated with blue light and nnEMF, all while altering their innate circadian rhythms, what do you think causes cancer here?

Other studies came from a petri dish of naked unprotected cells.

Don’t Compare The Studies on Animal Skin to Human Skin

All plants and animals know how much sunlight they need exactly.

Plants close or turn away their leaves in accordance with their molecular light harvesting zones.

Animals seek the shade when the sun is enough, plus they are protected by fur.

Humans lost their fury skin. So we had to develop a completely new concept of skin. No other creature on this planet has complex skin structure like humans.

You need to be very careful when comparing studies done on animals to human biology. You cannot compare our skin to animals!

Red Sunburn is Not Good But Pink Skin is a Healthy Reaction

I want to make it clear that getting burnt so that you are red and your skin peels is not good and can put your health at risk.
On the dimmer side of the spectrum, skin becoming pink from the sun is a healthy reaction.

The Beneficial Pathology of Sunlight Causing Pink Skin

  • Sunlight gives nitric oxide, which is a vassal dilator.
  • This brings Red Blood Cells (RBCs) to the surface from the skin (“dermal pooling”).
  • These RBCs comprise of haemoglobin and porphyrins that come to the surface to absorb UV spectrum to charge up with energy and enhance movement (healthy vata function), so they can perform their essential tasks of oxygenating the whole body and circulating life-force (prana).
  • Blood is trying to absorb UV light. UV is not the enemy.
  • Blood is a magnetohydrodynamic fluid that links the sun to your mitochondria.
  • This is why your skin becomes pink, in order to capture sunlight for these vital bodily functions.

Real Risk Factors For Skin Cancer

Artificial Blue Light

Melanoma incidence has risen 23 times from 1935-2012

This is in accordance with a gorge on artificial light while burying the sun from our life.

  • In the last 100 years, the USA workforce has shifted from 75% outside to 75% inside.
  • Vitamin D3 rates are at historic lows.
  • Outdoor workers have a lower incidence of melanoma than indoor workers.
  • Melanoma rates are higher in those living away from the equator.

In summary, skin cancer rates are getting higher while people are getting exponentially less sun.

It just doesn’t make sense that the sun is what causing this epidemic of skin cancer.

Let's look more into why swapping fake blue light for natural sunlight is a prevailing cause of skin cancer:

Blue Light Destroys Melatonin

Melatonin is an absolutely essential hormone:

  • Maintains Immunity
  • The Body’s Most Powerful Antioxidant
  • Energy Levels and Mitochondrial Health
  • Maintains Circadian Rhythms
  • Regulates All Other Hormones
  • Better Sleep
  • Cognitive Health and Brain Health
  • Weight Loss
  • Healthy Bones and Joint Health
  • Healthy Microbiome
  • Blood Sugar and Metabolic Health

Read more about Melatonin via my article: Melatonin: Benefits and How to Optimise It.

  • All modern indoor (blue) lighting subtract out UV and Infrared light. This worsens problematic (uneven) modern skin pigmentation.
  • Red light has been shown to lower the risk of melanogenesis (skin pigmentation process). Unfortunately, red light has also been subtracted from modern man-made light, further increasing the blue light hazard for uneven skin pigmentation.

Exposing your skin to artificial light means you are absorbing an altered, unnatural spectrum of light that is unharmonious to the skin's photosynthesis processes. This stresses the cells and causes impaired skin physiology, potentially leading to skin cancer.

Cancer is uncontrolled growth and uncoupled growth of cells. Constant blue light is putting stimuli for grow, grow, grow. Along with this is a lack of stable energy which should have been obtained from the sun.

Different light frequencies effect on the skin:

  • UVA (320–400 nm) can induce IPD (immediate pigment darkening) during the first minutes of exposure, which is a transient form of pigmentation and fades away within a few hours. PPD (persistent pigment darkening) appears within hours of higher doses of UVA exposure and persist up to several days or weeks.
  • Visible light (Blue light) (400–700 nm) lies outside of the spectral range of what photo-biologists define as deleterious (harmful) radiation. VL can have a significant impact on producing “uneven pigmentation in skin” (melasma), which is the main factor for photo-ageing. This becomes worse and more uneven if the skin lacks UV. All modern indoor (blue) lighting subtract out UV and IR light, worsening the problematic (uneven) modern skin pigmentation.
  • Red light has been shown to lower the risk of melanogenesis (imbalanced skin pigmentation process) but this colour light has also been subtracted from modern man-made light further increasing the blue light hazard for skin pigmentation.

Note that skin pigmentation is an important human phenotypic trait whose regulation, in spite of recent advances, has not yet been fully understood. Traditionally skin pigmentation is believed as the most important photo-protective factor, since melanin, besides functioning as a broadband UV absorbent, has antioxidant and radical scavenging properties.

Inflamed Gut

Inflammation via the gut affects the vagus nerve which opens the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and makes the brain lose control of the immune system. This deactivates the immune system and leads to cancer by increasing ubiquitin markings and turning on the inflammatory cascade and the growth cascades that all lead to cancer.

Studies show a link between Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Skin Cancer.

UV Intoxication

Very heavy ultra-violet exposure and sunburn can cause skin cancer.

Genetic Predisposition Regarding Skin Type

This is approximately less than 5% of the population.

Hormonal Predisposition

Including Hormones Replacement Therapies.

Ingredients of Skin Care Products

In Ayurveda, we administer herbs through the skin (through medicated oils and pastes) to access deep body tissues more efficiently than even administering herbs internally. Modern science calls this "trans-dermal technology." Chemicals of skin care products can also penetrat the skin and deeper tissues. Rule of thumb: “Only put it on your skin if you can eat it.”

Intake of Photosensitising Drugs and Other Medications

(e.g. Viagra, Tetracycline)

Environmental Pollutants

A contributing factor to impaired skin physiology, particularly sei-conductors on the skin.

Electromagnetic Radiation

From wireless devices like phones, cellphone towers, wifi routers, laptops and computers smart TVs etc. (EMF).

  • Calcium efflux (leaking of calcium ions) is a principal membrane reaction to EMF exposure. This lowers sulfate levels in all cells, but especially the skin and surface arterioles where the sun hits us.
  • Calcium efflux in the central nervous system also alters blood chemistry.
  • This chronic effluxing of calcium seriously disturbs calcium levels, Parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels and Vitamin D homeostasis in the skin.
  • Calcium efflux also alters the synthesising function of certain enzymes and other biological functions. For the science geeks: Endothelial NOS (eNOS) sulfate production stimulated by nitric oxide in the presence of UVB and IR light is altered when calcium efflux occurs.

How Sunscreen May Contribute to Skin Cancer

It’s not only the chemicals in sunscreens that produce free radicals that promote skin cancer (see graph below).

Even with some natural sunscreens, when you target to block specific frequencies of the light spectrum and alter wavelengths, the end result is an altered spectrum of light hitting your skin. Not a FULL spectrum holistic light.

You can’t take out one part of the spectrum and think you’re doing it better than nature.

This stresses the cells and causes impaired skin physiology leading to skin cancer.

Note that if you can't help but be in the sun all day unprotected by clothes (best option), sunscreen can provide some protection.

Sunscreens to Use

If you are going to use sunscreen, use one that “shimmers” and doesn’t absorb into the body (causing the free radical damage).

The higher the SPF the higher risk of cancer and reduces vitamin D synthesis.

I recommend applying cold-pressed coconut oil while out in the sun. Coconut oil is sulfur-based which help absorb Vitamin D3 plus it protects. Also doing self-abhyanga will improve your skin physiology to reflect excess sunlight and absorb and transduce beneficial rays for good use.

How to Protect Yourself from Sun Burn

Shade and Clothing

Fundamental innate solution. The best protection

Improve your Skin Physiology and Tolerance to Sun

Strategically allow for sunlight to change the anatomical structure of your skin with gradual sun exposure + self-abhyanga. A thickening of the skin will occur as there is increase in melanocytes and keratinocytes and melanin pigment. This is the build-up of natural sun protection on the epidermis. Like building “Light Calluses” on your skin.

Expose Yourself to Late Afternoon Sun

If you want to build up your tolerance to the sun and expose your skin to the sun in a safer way, choose afternoon/evening sun closer to sunset. This time of sun exposure is safer according to Ayurveda and now modern science (see graph below). This especially applies for hot climates.

Note that the morning sun is also important as it provides specific beneficial rays (UVA-IRA light).

"Exposure to evening sun gives longevity."
~ Ancient Ayurvedic Slohka (saying)

Conclusions

Moderate and diligent sun exposure has positive effects and health benefits for most humans. The sun is crucial for optimal health.

(Maybe) 5%* of the population really shouldn’t expose themselves to sunlight due to their individual risk profile.

If you don’t get adequate access to sunlight you’ll need to go on more holidays or bathe in full-spectrum artificial light.

In regards to skin cancer, it all comes down to proper skin physiology and overall health.

Optimise your skin physiology with proper diet, healthy environment, self-abhyanga and good sunlight.

Optimise your health and immune system through the various practices which I share on my website.

Melatonin: The Critical Hormone & How to Optimise It

Melatonin is an essential hormone that provides a multitude of benefits throughout the human body.

Mistakenly it has been dubbed the hormone of sleep, but more accurately it is the "hormone of darkness," since it trains our circadian rhythms to the day and night cycles, a critical cycle to be aligned with for optimal health.

Since the 2017 Nobel Prize was won for "Circadian Medicine," volumes of research are now showing melatonin is important for many things other than sleep and jet lag.

Benefits of Melatonin

Maintains Immunity

Low melatonin = weak immune system which makes you susceptible to cancer. Melatonin is the best anti-cancer hormone because it is vital for optimal immune function.

The Body’s Most Potent Antioxidant

As declared by numerous studies. Melatonin scavenges for free radicals, stimulates genes to turn on other antioxidant systems, has access to any and every cell in the body and easily crosses the blood-brain barrier.

The process:

  • During sleep, all your brain cells shrink from 40-60%, creating room in the brain for melatonin to flood in and bind to all the oxidative stress and free radicals.
  • It then sweeps this oxidative stress (that ages us) out through cerebrospinal fluid, down into the circulatory system, for the liver and kidneys to process and eliminate out of the body.
  • Melatonin also floods through the lymphatics and detoxifies different organs throughout the night.

Energy Levels and Mitochondrial Health

Mitochondria are the energy generators for every cell. Melatonin makes life easier and more efficient for these energy generators.

  • When melatonin is removed from your brain, you loose DHA in cell membranes.
  • DHA is the only lipid that can turn sunlight into DC electric current and visa versa.
  • The DC electric circulates through your body to provide you with energy.
  • DC current also counters inflammation (DC current is a negative charge and inflammation is a positive charge).
  • Note that stress also reduces DHA. Studiess here.

Maintains Circadian Rhythms and Regulates All Other Hormones

Since all the hormones are connected like a web. Especially reproductive hormones and hormones related to metabolism an appetite.

Better Sleep, Cognitive Health, Brain Health, Weight Loss

Numerous studies show this (3),(4),(5).

Melatonin is a direct antagonist to cortisol. When melatonin is up, cortisol (stress) goes down.

Healthy Bones and Joint Health

Studies showed melatonin helps in the treatment of bone pathologies such as the osteoporosis and the adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). It aslo may prevent bone degradation and promote bone formation.

Healthy Microbiome

Our gut bacteria are regulated by our circadian clock and are sensitive to melatonin. Melatonin, which is secreted into the gastrointestinal lumen expresses circadian patterns of swarming and motility. Studies suggest the human circadian system may regulate its microbiome through the entrainment of bacterial clocks.

Blood Sugar, Metabolic Health and Cravings

Studies showed that Melatonin regulates insulin secretion and protects against reactive oxygen species which are a threat to pancreatic β-cells (the cells that do the job of storing and releasing insulin).

β-cells are very susceptible to oxidative stress because they possess only low-antioxidative capacity.

Low melatonin levels will cause high insulin levels and high dopamine levels which causes stress (cortisol) along with an increase in cravings, addictions and metabolic disorders.

Strong cravings for carbohydrates in the summer is a natural circadian response to prepare for the famine or lack of food during the darkness of winter. (1)

When we light our homes with artifical blue light for an extra 5-6 hours after sunset, we are sending the “endless summer” message to our cellular biological clocks that it is time to crave carbs in preparation for the famine of winter. This carb craving can last for 365 days a year.(2)

More Than Meets the Eye: Skin Receptors for Melatonin

It is not just your eyes that initiate melatonin production, there are receptors in your skin.

Melatonin is mostly produced after the retinal ganglion cells in our eyes perceive light. Interestingly however, there are also photo-pigments on the skin all over the body can detect different types of light and sync peripheral rhythms with the light and dark cycle.

Neuroxin is a UVA receptor present in our skin and eye that gets stimulated by light. This receptor was only found in 2009.

This is why even blind people can still have a diurnal rhythm in sync with the light/dark cycle.

Artifical Blue Light Disrupting Melatonin

Artifical blue light destroys melatonin.

Not only does it lower melatonin, but when we are watching our computers or TV at night, or checking our emails at or before sunrise, our dirunal clock becomes confused and all the hormones become disturbed (think of our hormal system like a web, all connected).

As we learnt before, it is not only our eyes!

The skin receptors also get stimulated by artifical blue light. Surface photo-chemistry influences the tissues underneath. These spectrums can penetrate all the way to the fat tissue layer and cause free radicals, energy problems, and more.

Your thyroid only sits about half a cm under you skin. So the blue light is penetrating to the thyroid. People with hashimotos beware. Perhaps the most important remedy for low thyroid is nasya + watch the sunrise + get sunshine on your neck and protect your neck from fake blue light.

Ways to Optimise Melatonin

Get Sunshine

Watch the sunrise and the sunset without sunglasses, glasses or contact lenses (as these alter a holistic light spectrum by blocking specific frequencies).

Sunbathe with as much bare skin as possible. Soak up the sun in moderation. Slowly build your skin tolerance to the sun.

Proper Sleep

Melatonin is the hormone of darkness. It will build while you are asleep. Be in bed before 10 pm, and wake up with the sun.

The latest Nobel Prize proved ancient wisdom by showing maximum melatonin production is between 10pm - 2am, which Ayurveda has been saying for thousands of years is the "Pitta time," where your body metabolises food, nutrients and hormones.

The catch is you need to be asleep for the production!

No Artificial Light at Night

Artificial light at night, even if it is ambient blocks the production of melatonin needed to get to sleep and stay asleep. Use candles or revolutionize back to incandescent light bulbs for night time.

Begin reducing blue and artificial light exposure starting at sunset, or 2-3 hours before bed. Make sure there are no lights on at night while you sleep. If necessary, use blackout curtains or an eye mask to block ambient light. Ensure you still get up at sunrise.

Go camping for a couple or few days without artifical light of electronic devices. That will do wonders.

Reduce LED Lights and Screens at Night

Don't look at your phone first thing when you wake up. Do your morning routine before touching that thing.

Reduce TV and computers at night time and 2 hours before bed. We are not biologically wired at all to be exposed to such high light temperatures while the sun is not up.

Use filters on your computer, make your phone screen "most warm" 24/7 and use blue light blocking glasses.

Nasya (Nasal Drops)

Nasya is the practice of sniffing herbal oil up your nose to your pineal gland to detox the pineal gland and activate it's functions of jobs like initiating melatonin secretion.

Learn more about Nasya here.

Melatonin Rich Foods

  • Goji berries (very high source).
  • Cherries, espeically tart cherries. Tart cherry juice has been studied to help sleep.
  • Walnuts and almonds.
  • Flaxseeds
  • Tomatoes
  • Fenugreek and mustard seeds
  • Raspberries
  • Bed Time Milk Elixir - Whether its milk from mother, cow or goat, studies show it boost melatonin.

(3)

Reduce Coffee - Logic will tell you that caffeine as a stimulant will inhibit melatonin production—and it does.  Studies suggest that at night the caffeine will block melatonin production. This supersedes the constituents in coffee that actually help boost melatonin levels.

Always eat in season since all food absorbs light and you will consume the appropriate dose of electrons and meltatonin.

Supplements

I recommend you only consider supplementation after you have tried all the natural interventions above.

Those who work night shifts or very long hours, people who fly frequently and people who still struggle with sleep should consider this.

Assess whether you need a time-release or immeditate melatonin. Get quality supplements here.

Although you can get melatonin from foods and man-made pills, sunlight is the most dominant synchroniser of melatonin production. Get more sun.

Bed Time Treatment

The Ultimate Vata Balancer

This treatment is done in the comfort of your own home. A technician comes to your house for a nourishing "tuck you in" before sleep.

The Bed Time Treatment involves:

1    Shiro-pichu -application of a little oil to the head using an oil specific for the mind.

2    Pad-Abyanga - Foot massage with oil specific for feet and the nervous system.

3    Matra Basti - a small nourishing oil enema.

This treatment is very effective for the nervous system, joint problems, constipation and enhancing the microbiology in the gut amongst many other things.

About Basti (Enema)

Most people think enemas are to detox the colon or clean out the gut. In Ayurveda there is a type of enema that is used for this purification purpose called "Shodana Basti," however it is only performed with a detailed and closely monitored protocol before, during and after the enema. Not just something you can rock up and book in. and post-care in conjunction to

Matra Basti means "small enema." It primarily not for the digestion and to detox but mostly for the nervous system, revitalising and nourishing the largest nerve plexus in your body - the enteric nervous system, which lies in your gut. This is home to majority of our micro-biome, which do the heavy lifting for many essential body processes, and which by the way, loves Ayurvedic oils, especially Vital Veda's Matra Basti Oils.

This treatment is usually included in the Panchakarma program. Some patients do the massage and administer the enema themselves. This can also be done for individuals even not on Panchakarma.

Vital Veda's Unique Oils

Vital Veda’s oils contain complex and precious formulations of a vast range of organic, wild crafted and rare herbs.

We use a specific oil for Siro Pichu and a different specific one for Pad Abhyanga. There are a range of basti oils we choose from depending on the individuals physiology and needs.

We employ purification and preparation methods that have been passed down for many generations within the Raju Family of Vaidyas. Further they infuse genuine love and mantras (primordial sounds) into the herbs during preparation.

This ensures safety and enhances a divine potency, and is one of the factors that make our herbal oils profoundly effective and treasured by so many.

The Vital Short Home Cleanse

5 Days to Revitalise Your Digestion, Metabolism, & Energy Levels

A "DIY" Panchakarma Detox and Rejuvenation Program

The Vital Short Home Cleanse (VSHC) is a short 5 day cleanse and detox designed for those who are ready to feel lighter, more energised and peaceful. It is appropriate for busy people who don't have the time for Panchakarma (Ayurvedic detoxification and rejuvenation program) or a similar longer cleanse/retreat.

The VSHC is a "DIY" (Do It Yourself) cleanse consisting of following a daily regimen, a simple and delicious diet protocol, taking a few herbal supplements and perhaps backing up a little from your regular life and giving more time to Yourself and rest.

"DIY" entails that the results are based on the level of your compliance and dedication to the program. How far you take it is up to you. You can choose to retreat and reduce external stimuli to turn your senses inside out to feel the deeper parts of yourself. Or, on the other hand, you can integrate the VSHC at the same time as working full time, which will still reap transforming benefits for you body and mind.

This easy 5 day detox will help stimulate your body's natural ability to burn fat, reset digestion, reduce cravings and eliminate toxins.

When to do the Vital Short Home Cleanse

  • The best time to detox is when you have the time to rest. During the 5 days you should be in bed every night by 9:30-10pm and have minimal social/work commitments.
  • It is important to cleanse and relax on a regular basis or when your lymph is stagnant. (see VSHC eBook for signs of stagnated lymph).
  • You can do the VSHC three to twelve times a year.
  • If you typically experience coughs, congestion, weakened immunity or allergy symptoms during a particular season, it is good to do this cleanse about one month prior to when you usually experience symptoms.
  • Do not do this cleanse during fever, if you are not feeling 100% well or during menstruation.

Golden Milk Elixir

Just like grandma used to cook up for you with love and foresight. This nightly sleep aid and anabolic tonic holds great wisdom, incorporating one of the most nourishing foods: cows milk, with the intelligence of natures herbs and spices. You’ll sleep like a baby and super charge overnight.

Dreaming of a Good Night’s Sleep?

This Ayurvedic remedy will reduce your stress to allow you to switch off and gain a more restful and undisturbed sleep.

Supersede the Stress

Insomnia, which can increase the risk of most degenerative diseases(1) is mostly caused by stress. When we are under stress, cortisol levels (stress fighting hormones) do not decrease, rather they keep us revved up throughout the night and we don’t have the energy to calm them back down.

Modern science has once again proved ancient wisdom by showing milk has certain peptides that lower cortisol and support sleep by 50%. The improvements of sleep are remarkable:

  • Promotes deeper sleep (3)
  • Supports more restorative sleep (3)
  • Provides relaxation at the level needed for sleep (4)
  • Calms anxiety (4)
  • Improves numerous stress markers (5)
  • These peptides further support digestion, emotional state, cognitive function and even cardiovascular function. (6)

Interestingly, these peptides in milk activate GABA receptors.(4) Pharmaceutical drugs that are widely used as sedatives for stress, anxiety, and sleep target these same GABA receptors!(7)

Ojas Building

Even if you sleep well, this night-time tonic will not only upgrade your sleep to be more deep and restful, but also build your Ojas.

Ojas (OH-jas) is considered to be the most refined by-product of digestion, said to reside in the heart. Ayurveda considers ojas to be a bio-celestial substance that is our vital essence.

Our vitality, immunity, vigour, skin, sleep, digestion, spirituality and physical strength are all directly influenced by our reserve of ojas.

Ojas builds our inner silence. It Increases the ability to genetically connect with the circadian rhythms allowing the body to resonate with the rhythms and thrive. If your body is under stress, emergency alarm bells will keep ringing (flight or fight response/sympathetic nervous system) disconnecting you from the genetic ability to hear these rhythms.

Building ojas is an art. Yoga, pranayama breathing exercises, meditation, spending time in nature, sleeping at the right times, laughing, showing love and affection and giving to others, spending time being creative, relaxing, and doing things that make you happy all build ojas.

Perhaps one of the best ways to consistently build ojas is to eat a diet of fresh, unprocessed whole foods in the appropriate season.
Further, there are certain foods and herbs in Ayurveda that are great ojas-builders. These were traditionally blended with warm milk and taken before bed as a sleep aid and an ojas-builder.

Ayurveda’s Super Sleep Recipe:

  • Boil 3/4 cup of unhamogensied cows milk + 3/4 cup of water + 2 strands of saffron + 1 chopped date + 3 crushed and peeled almonds. Boil till it reduces to approximately 1 cup or till it fully foams up.
  • After the milk has boiled. Add:
  • 1/4tsp cardamom powder
  • 1/4tsp cinnamon powder
  • 1/4tsp ginger
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • pinch of black pepper
  • 1/2tsp ghee.
  • 1/4 tsp Ashwagandha powder (optional for more ojas building and calming effect)
  • 1/4 tsp Shatavari powder (optional for more ojas building and calming effect)
  • pinch of Ojo or Samadhi (Raju family herbal preparation)
(Can modify herbs and spices according to season and body constitution).

Sitr well, then drink and enjoy.

When to Drink It:

  • Have between dinner and sleep - approximately 45-60mins after dinner and 45-60mins before bed.
  • You can even make this your dinner.
  • Drink one cup of the golden milk each night for 3 months to rebuild ojas levels and support sleep patterns.
  • You can also have this in the morning approximately 45 minutes before breakfast or make it your breakfast, (good for people who don’t have an appetite in the morning). It is also a great replacement to coffee.

"But I Don’t Do Dairy"

If you are intolerant to dairy, it is probably indigestion, some weakness and/or your mind getting the better over you by 'accepting' the intolerance. Additionally, most milk is difficult to digest because it is unnecessarily homogenised, pasteurised the wrong way, added chemicals, pesticides, preservatives and anti-biotic’s.

However, drink the right milk and correct your agni, and you may find you can slowly introduce this medicinal lactation back into your diet.

Most places you can find milk that is non-homogenised without all these nasty additives. Getting non-pasturised or vat-pasturised, (heated at low temperature for short time), is a bonus, but the main precept is to drink non-homogenised milk. This has become so popular that mainstream supermarkets in Australia and New Zeland are now selling it. Additionally, most health-food stores will have it.

If you are very sensitive to milk, I suggest first correct agni, then slowly introduce dairy by drinking thin Lassi with lunch.

You may substitute substitute coconut or (freshly made) almond milk. Though you won’t get the benefits of the milk peptides, you’ll still have a vehicle for the ojas-building foods and herbs and some calming benefits from the warmth of the milk.

Take this milk to build some resiliency towards the stress that prevents us from sleeping like we should.

It’s tasty, nourishing and a great way to end the day, plus it’ll send you off with the clouds for the night.

7 Ayurvedic Super Foods

According to modern science, food nutritionists, food industry leaders and dieticians, so called “superfoods” aren’t exactly “super.” Wikipedia describes that “Superfood is a marketing term used to describe foods with supposed health benefits..”

The European Union has even prohibited the marketing of products as “superfoods,” unless accompanied by a specific medical claim supported by credible scientific research.(1)

Not particularly inspiring…so I will redefine the word from an Ayurvedic perspective.

First of all, there is no need to exaggerate that foods are “super.” Whatever one uniquely needs will be their superfood. Additionally, everything is actually superfood if you know how to transform and use it.

In general, for a food to be “super” it must:

1. Promote ‘Sattva’

Sattva is a quality in us that translates to “purity.” If Sattva is increased, then so is our inner stillness, clarity of mind and contentment. Love radiates and flows back to us in abundance, while the hormone oxytocin (also known as the “bonding hormone”) is simultaneously secreting. Fresh, seasonal whole foods are predominately Sattvic, thus increases the Sattvic quality in us based on the Ayurvedic law of “like increases like.”

2. Detox and Heal the Body

Some Ayurvedic foods are prized for their powerful medicinal properties. Ayurveda valuably teaches us how to use food as medicine.

3. Directly nourish ‘Ojas’

Ojas is the vital essence of our body that translates to “vitality.”
A plentiful reserve of Ojas is reflected in the lustre of the eyes and skin (like the glow in a baby), strong physical strength, immunity and libido, good digestion, vigour and spirituality.

'Ojas' is considered to be the most refined product of digestion. Every food must metabolise through all the body’s tissues before it can become Ojas.

Ojas: a bio-celestial liquid substance that (predominately) resides in the heart, as well as all over the body in a less concentrated matter.

Building Ojas is an art. Perhaps one of the best ways to consistently build Ojas is to eat a diet of fresh unprocessed, seasonal whole foods, and have a balanced agni to support the process. A handful of special foods (some listed below) even metabolise to nourish and build Ojas directly.

The Super Seven!

The seven Ayurvedic super foods I have chosen genuinely are super. They aren’t just packed with a dense hit nutrients, minerals and essential constituents, but actually promote and support your bodies natural intelligence to absorb and produce its own required constituents itself! Further, The Super Seven promote strength, immunity, peace and contentment in the body and mind. And best of all, they are readily available to everyone! Here they are…

1. Hot Water

I am about to reveal to you a very special Ayurvedic purification technique that is excellent for eliminating toxins from the body’s system…
It sounds very simple, but you’ll find that is has a powerful influence in purifying and strengthening the gastrointestinal tract, as well as detoxing and rejuvenating the major systems of the body.

All you have to do is sip hot water frequently throughout the day.

Sipping frequently (rather than focusing on quantity) flushes the lymphatic system, softens hardened tissues (just like hot water will soften leather, unlike cold water) and dilates channels and deeply hydrates the body. It also heals and repairs the digestive system.
In a short time you’ll begin to appreciate the soothing and balancing effect of this technique. Once you have gotten used to it, you will look forward to drinking hot water on a frequent basis.

“Hot water is the most superfood.”
~ Dr. J.R. Raju.

2. Ghee

Ghee is the crown jewel that joins Ayurvedic medicine and Indian cooking. Ghee is clarified or purified butter. With all the lactose components & milk solids removed, no-one is allergic to ghee.
Ghee is light to digest and has the special quality of enkindling Agni and supports fat metabolism. It effectively detoxes the gut and is an effective source of internal lubrication.
This concentrated golden substance is highly Sattvic and directly nourishes Ojas.

3. Cows Milk

Dairy has a bad name in the press these days. With people increasingly claiming dairy intolerances, it has become perilous in todays new-age health scene.

Let me clarify two reasons why this has developed:

1. The dairy industry in the west is increasingly producing homogenised milk from poorly treated, stress inundated cows that are being fed grains. Further, the milk is pasteurised the wrong way, with added chemicals, pesticides, preservatives and anti-biotic’s.

2. A lot of kids drink cold homogenised milk with sugar filled processed cereals, and topping it off with some fruit in their bowl or having a glass of OJ on the side – a highly “un-ayurvedic” recipe for an incompatible digestive disaster.

Hence, people develop a dairy intolerance. And it may only hit them down the track. Possibly when they finally begin to tune into their own body and become more conscious.

Let me also add, if you believe and accept the notion that “dairy is bad,” you negatively charge the micro-biome in the foods, stress out your own body and if when you eat dairy with guilt it will not digest well due to lack of harmonious compatibility. Mind is the culprit here.

However, Ayurveda on the other hand prizes dairy as one of the most medicinal and nourishing foods and one of the most anabolic foods that directly builds Ojas. Rest assured, it is not a requirement for anybody to drink milk all the time, but if someone is in need of strength or Ojas, milk is one of Ayurveda’s top choices.

What more, it is a classic Ayurveda sleep remedy to drink boiled milk with spices before bed, also having a profound stress reducing action. Modern science has proved ancient wisdom by showing cows milk has certain peptides that lower cortisol and support sleep by 50%.(2)

Cows are considered sacred animals in India and cow milk is highly revered in Ayurveda as one of the most Sattvic of foods.

Please note: milk should always be boiled with equal amounts of water and un-homogenised and preferably organic. This will make it easier to digest.

If you have difficulty with cow’s milk don’t worry, first correct your agni, then slowly introduce dairy. (Consult an Ayurvedic practitioner). Also, there are six other superfoods on the list to choose from!

4. Lassi

Lassi is buttermilk, or diluted yoghurt.

  • Improves digestion and a fantastic pro-biotic.
  • Lassi is the best alkaliser.
  • As Lassi improves digestion and absorption it ultimately supports calcium absorption and bone health.
  • Balances heat (pitta) and clear the physical channels.
  • It is the best remedy (with a pinch of salt) for haemorrhoids and anal fissures.
  • A great food to introduce dairy to a lactose intolerant person after they have corrected their agni.
  • Lassi is very hydrating, and a great drink to have with lunch.

*Yoghurt should be fresh.
Ratios of Yoghurt : Water: 1:4, 1:6, or 1:14.

5. Honey

Honey is super Sattivc and directly nourishes our own life-nectar, Ojas. It is actually more of a medicine than a food. Due to its richness, it should be taken in moderation.

On the other hand, Ayurveda teaches that honey will be poisonous when heated above body temperature (that means no honey in hot teas, hot porridge, cooking with honey etc.) as it perniciously clogs the channels. This is why is it always important to purchase honey that is extracted at low temperatures.

6. Turmeric

Turmeric (Curcuma Longa) is the most thoroughly researched plant on this planet! and i don’t blame the scientists for the 5600 peer-reviewed and published biomedical studies.

Turmeric has a vast catalogue of health benefits, but here is an essential summary on why to use Turmeric as medicine in your daily cooking:

  • It is the best anti-inflammatory.
  • It regulates mood and boosts cognitive function.
  • Protects the gut and stomach lining.
  • Supports joints: (pain, stiffness, swelling, arthritis) and healthy blood.
  • Since turmeric is anti-carcinogenic, it is vital to use when cooking meat due to the high risk of carcinogenic properties in most meat these days.

Turmeric powder is best advised, always with a pinch of black pepper, as black pepper increases the absorption of turmeric by an astonishing 2000%!(3)

7. Almonds

Almonds are also Sattvic and help to maintain our Ojas. They are a good source of zinc, strengthen the body and grounding for the mind. But they are also quite rich and heavy, so again, moderation is the key. Half a handful of almonds a day is enough. To make them lighter and easier to digest, always soak almonds overnight in water and remove their skins the next day.

If you are in any doubt about your health please be sure to consult an Ayurvedic Practitioner or your local health physician.

Travel Healthy! Reduce Aeroplane Stress

Aeroplane travel will surreptitiously “suck the life out of you.” It sucks all the moisture out of your body.
With the humidity level in the cabins of most commercial aeroplanes at just 10-20%, and some even as low as 1%!(1), this makes aeroplanes drier than the Sahara Desert! which sits at about 25% humidity.

Take a good look at yourself in the mirror after travelling, especially if you travel a lot. If you are slightly in tune with your body, you will probably realise how much aeroplane travel accelerates your ageing process.

You may be surprised to learn the many risks associated with air travel.

For example, one study shows how bacteria can stay alive and continue to be infectious for more than a week on the armrests, seat pockets, seats and bathroom doors of commercial aircrafts. The dry air is said to contribute to their extra-long life on aeroplanes. (2)

That’s not to mention the health risks associated with jet lag, dehydration, swelling and fatigue.

Altitude Shock = Dehydration & Dryness

Ever wonder why it is so easy to fall asleep in a plane? It is likely because the oxygen has been literally sucked out of your brain as the cabin is being pressurised.

When people flock to mountain towns to hike, ski or for leisure, it is very common for them to get altitude sickness. Even fit athletes who train at altitude can tell the difference when they climb to 3,000 meters. In a plane, this altitude change happens in just a couple of minutes!

Dehydration and body dryness is the most instant result of altitude shock.

If you are flying a lot and your body is repeatedly put through such drastic altitude changes, the effects become chronic. Chronic sub-clinical dehydration will first dry out the outer skin and then dry out the skin associated lymph beneath the skin. When this dries out, lymphatic flow is hampered, compromising its function of draining toxins and circulating white blood cells around the body for immunity.

The good news is, I’ve compiled some effective strategies to buffer these risks. Incorporating just a few simple tips to your air travel routine will help lessen the impact of flying and help you feel more vibrant during and after your trips.

Air Travel Survival Tools

Pre-Hydrate

For 1-2 days before you fly, make every effort to drink plenty of warm-hot water. Approximately 2-3L depending on your body weight. Fresh coconut water is also recommended if in season and local.

On the day of your flight, sip hot water every 10-15 minutes to help further hydrate and support the lymphatic system.

Lubricate

Perform Ayurvedic Self-Abhyanga (Massage) before and after trips or treat yourself to an Abhyanga if available, especially upon arrival.

This will not only counter the dryness but effectively move the lymph and circulate blood. Continue to topically apply oil as a moisturiser on the flight.
Pack a little Ghee as lip balm, or use the massage oil.

Shilajit

Used by Himalayan mountain climbers to gain energy for climbing at heights above 6,000 meters and to help oxygenate at high altitudes. The active ingredient of this ancient herb, Fulvic acid, has now been found by scientists to support oxygen and energy transport. Consider taking this herb around travel days.*

* It is best to take herbs in a therapeutic combination rather than by itself. If taking by itself, have 1 day break every 7 days. Consult an Ayurvedic practitioner for a proper formulation and prescription.

Pitta body types take caution as Shiljait is very heating and may aggravate Pitta.

Recycled Air

The Journal of Environmental Health Research reported that air travel increases the risk of catching a cold by 100 times because of the recycled air.

While exposure is unavoidable, we can increase our immunity and decrease our susceptibility.

Air Travel Survival Tools

Nasya

My most prized aeroplane survival tool.

Nasya is an Ayurvedic technique which involves lubricating the nasal passages (responsible for immunity).

Oil to use:  Vital Veda/Raju Nasika herbalised oil formula is superior. Inferior but still effective is Anu Tailia or cold pressed sesame oil.

Method: Tilt the head back and drop 1-3 drops in each nostril every hour so. The aim is to sniff it through the entire nasal passages, and even further up to your brain.
Also pop a couple of drops in your ears to deal with cabin pressure.

Learn about Nasya more here

Immune Boosting Rasayana (Elixir)

Ananda Siddhi Yog
Highly nourishing to the body and boosts immunity, strengthens and repairs all the seven layers of the dhatus (tissues) and gives all the refined nourishment you need for rapid healing. Very good for chronic coughs (strengthens the lungs) and restores physical vitality.
This is superior to Chywanprash.
Take 1 tsp 1-2x/day. Contact Vital Veda to order.

Chywanprash
This trusted and popular Ayurvedic formula supports immunity. This is a classic remedy for supporting frequent travellers and mitigating your risk of catching a cold during a flight.
*Please buy a quality product from a trustworthy source such as Vital Veda or Maharishi Ayurveda.

Jet Lag

Imagine air-lifting a dolphin from the Tasman Sea off the coast of Sydney, Australia to the Indian Ocean by Singapore in just 8 hours. Then, after a quick layover, air-lift that same dolphin to the harbour in Hong Kong in 4 hours.

Would you expect that dolphin to ever re-establish normal migration patterns? If so, how long do you think it might take?

For humans too, this disruption of the body’s normal biological rhythms is very real.

Jet lag can cause fatigue and lead to cognitive decline, sleep issues, and even psychotic or mood disorders.

Air Travel Survival Tools

Daily Ayurvedic Massage

Since your skin has more nerve endings than any other organ, applying herbalised oil will pacify the nervous system. Every square centimetre of the body’s skin is innervated by sensory neurons. These neurones are much happier when fed with herbalised oil, rather than left dehydrated to become irritated and over-stimulated. Learn to do self-massage.

Watch the Sunrise & Sunset

Watch the sunrise and sunset to re-connect with the local circadian cycles. Natures rhythms will enter through the retina of your eyes to regulate hormones like melatonin.
Even if it means pulling yourself out of bed, it’s worth it, and beautiful.

Ashwagandha

Considered by many to be one of the most potent adaptogens, this herb supports the body’s ability to adapt to stress like that incurred by jet lag and prevent you from absorbing the crippling impact.

It is best to take herbs in a therapeutic combination rather then by it self. If taking by itself, have 1 day break every 7 days. Consult a quality Ayurvedic practitioner. I recommend the product Stresscom as a good source of ashwagandha.

Blood Clots

20 million travellers will develop blood clots, or deep vein thrombosis (DVT) a year.(3)
The risk factors seem to be a combination of sitting still for hours in a pressurised cabin, lymph congestion and dehydration.

Air Travel Survival Tools

Get Up and Move Regularly During Long Flights

  • Walk up and down the aisles more
  • Yoga Asanas - find a more spacious place to do stretches - I usually go near the bathroom, back or front of a section, near the staff stations, exit rows, rows with more leg room, empty business class areas, or my favourite, the muslim praying area.
  • Stretch your neck, rotate ankles, wrists, as much as you can while sitting.

Herbal Support

If DVT is an issue for you, it is important to consult a practitioner to tackle this problem. More complex herbs and treatment are required to dilate the channels.

Rest As Mentioned Above

Hearing Loss

Airline cabins range from 75 decibels in the front of the plane to 85 to 100 in the back. A loud nightclub, for example, roars at about 100 decibels. The Institute for Occupational Safety and Health limits safe noise levels to 88 decibels for four hours. This suggests that there is potential risk of permanent hearing damage during frequent flights that last longer than four hours.

Air Travel Survival Tools

Noise Reduction Headphones

If you are a frequent traveller, consider a set of noise reduction headphones, which reduce noise by about 40 decibels.

Nasya in the Ears

Pop a couple of Nasya oil drops in your ears before flying. Hold the head on each side for about a minute for the oil to sink down deep down into the eardrum.

Constipation

Very common due to jet lag, altitude shock and dehydration.

Swelling

Mainly caused by congested lymph.
Causative factors of lymph congestion are almost all of the idea discussed above, particularly:

  • Constipation dries out the lymph concentration on the gut wall.
  • Altitude shock affects cellular pressure, which is responsible for lymph movement.
  • Sitting still for hours may congest the lymph as their is no movement to pump the lymph and regulate the circulatory system.
  • Dehydration directly affects lymph flow.
  • Jet lag creates stress on the body, which is a major cause of lymph congestion.

Air Travel Survival Tools

Vital Veda / Raju Shodana Vati

Detoxification agent & whole-body cleansing purifier. 3-dosha blanching. Accordingly these herbal pills prepared by the Raju family will support regular bowel motions.

Triphala

Tripahla is a natural bowel toner that supports regular bowel movements. It can be used for short periods of time around travels without dependency. available at Vital Veda.

*Not necessary if you are taking “Shodana Vati.”

Sip Hot Water Frequently

Ensure you have a thermos with you to keep refilling. You’ll make best friends with the flight attendant and perhaps contribute to the revolution of drink hot water rather than cold.

Vata Tea

Since the Vata dosha gets mostly thrown out during travel, a Vata tea can assist in balancing. My favourite Vata tea is from Moksha Ayurveda.

Meditate More

Due to the harsh environment of an aeroplane, meditate as much as you like! It will buffer against jet lag, provide deep rest, and get you through the flight a lot more joyfully. Vedic Meditation is recommended.

Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol

These only dehydrate you further while in the flight.

Tongue Scraper and Herbal Toothpaste

Don’t forget these in your carry on luggage for long flights to scrape away the ama (toxins).

My on-board travel kit. Also includes a thermos and some Vata tea bags.

Don’t just Arrive Alive, Arrive and Thrive!

Abhyanga: Ayurvedic Massage – More Than Your Regular Massage

The leaves and bark of a tree are massaged by the wind,
the rocks and pebbles by the rivers and streams,
primates groom and rub up against each other to socially bond, decrease stress, and make up after a tussle,
a child feels protected with the touch of their mother.

Everything in this universe is being massaged continuously to be in perfect balance.

Massage, being the greatest form of the sense of touch, is essential to provide nourishment to the physical, mental and emotional bodies…

After people receive an authentic Ayurvedic massage, mostly they experience an underlying sustaining bliss, while simultaneously their grounded, relaxed and refreshed mind is surprised, “what did I just receive?”

Unique Features of Ayurvedic Massage

Ayurvedic massage is very different to the more common massages on the market – deep tissue, Swedish, Japanese, Chinese, Thai massage, sports massage, Lomi Lomi/Kahuna, etc.

  • Medicated Oils – This is a key aspect of the Abhyanga. Usually coconut or sesame oil is medicated with various herbs according to the season and the individual’s unique constitution. Ayurvedic massage oils have the power to penetrate through all layers of skin and enter into all 7 body tissues to do its job of effective detoxification, nourishment and more.
  • Strokes are selected and applied in a vigorous and rhythmic matter according to the client’s constitution and imbalances.
  • Special consideration is given to the Marma Points which are the special storehouses of energy and concentrated life force. The Marmas are enlivened for vast harmonious effects.
  • The 7 chakras are also worked on to unblock any problems related to them.
  • The Lymphatic system is critical for good health according to Ayurveda. Abhyanga specifically stimulates and strengthens the lymphatic system, thus improves immunity and stabilises hormones, thus improves physical and mental states.
  • Pacifying the Nervous System – The skin has more nerve endings then any part of the body! This is why Ayurvedic massage, through appropriate strokes channelled harmoniously with the body’s channels,  is so effective in calming the mind down, grounding a frantic mind, releasing stress, promoting proper sleep, and providing a state in which the body can deeply rest. There isn’t any other way to pacify 20,000,000 nerve receptors in the body’s skin in just a couple of minutes?!

“I feel like I have slept for a week…recently thoughts have been racing through my head throughout the night.”
~ Rao, after an Abhyanga at the Vital Veda clinic.

  • Blood Circulation – Blood is effectively circulated all throughout the body and toxins in the blood are expelled.
  • Internal Lubrication – As these oils can penetrate deep into the body, Ayurvedic massage promotes flexibility of the muscles, tissues and joints.
  • Promotes softness and luster of the skin as well as youthfulness.
  • Correcting Injuries – specifically the muscle and bone tissue (Mamsa & Asthi Dhatu)
  • Shaping the organs.
  • Regenerating tissues.
  • Creating a nurturing environment for the many microbes on the skin. Doing the massage lovingly will significantly allow the microbes to thrive even more, shaping your body for good health (as 90% of your body is bugs)!
  • It opens the flow of Prana (Life Force) by balancing the three doshas.
  • Detox – The medicated oil and specific methods drive the doshas and the Ama (toxins) from the deeper connective tissues back to the gastrointestinal tract for proper elimination. This is why after a massage you must rest and frequently sip hot water.

Western Science Proving the Power of Massage

  • Studies have shown that people with hypertension and depression improve with massage therapy.
  • Massage appears to decrease cortisol, a disease-producing and degenerative stress hormone.*
  • It also increases dopamine and norepinephrine, which boost mood, reward, pleasure and wellbeing.*
  • Massage has also been found to boost immunity and killer T cells in AIDS patients.*

In a recent study published in Alternative Therapies, 95 subjects had their blood levels evaluated for the following chemicals before and after a 15 minute massage:

  • Oxytocin: the primary target; a bonding and anti-anxiety hormone.
  • ACTH (adrenocorticotropin): a hormone that increases with stress and decreases with relaxation.

Oxytocin increases when one feels trust and/or empathy. It is the giving hormone, released during acts of appreciation, gratitude, emotional connections and giving touch. Laboring mothers secrete large amounts of oxytocin at birth, fostering the initial family bond.

Amazingly, research also shows that oxytocin*:

  • Extends life in cancer patients
  • Reduces cravings for sweets
  • Reduces anxiety and depression
  • Increases sexual potency and desire
  • Reduces cortisol and boosts immunity

The Results

Oxytocin levels increased by 17% for the group that received massage. The control group who just rested showed a 9% decrease in oxytocin.
ACTH (adrenocorticotropin) – which increases with stress – increased by 30% for the group who rested without receiving massage. Interestingly, it decreased by 20% for those who were in the massage group.

Light Touch vs. Deep Pressure Massage

In a previous study comparing oxytocin release during light touch and deep pressure massage, light touch massage (as used in Ayurvedic massage techniques), yielded a 27% increase in oxytocin and a 24% decrease in ACTH.

Perform Massage Daily

In India, getting a massage starts on day one. Mothers have been giving babies daily massages for thousands of years. Children start giving themselves daily massages at early ages alongside other daily practices like brushing teeth, scraping tongue, bathing etc., and continue this as a lifelong practice.

While receiving a massage daily by a therapist would yield astonishing results, this is uneconomical and unpractical. One must learn to do Self-Massage, because after attuning with your body in this way with deep self-respect, believe me, you will notice the difference that day and beyond!
