Introducing Solid Foods to Babies (The Ayurvedic Way)

Baby looking at food
When you introduce solid foods to your baby in a methodical and harmonious way, this will help promote digestive health and prevent food intolerances for that whole child’s future.

Ayurvedic medicine holds profound wisdom for post-natal rejuvenation for a healthy baby and mother.

The baby’s overall health is mainly treated and attended to via the mother’s health: post-natal rejuvenating herbs, nutrition, massages and other Ayurvedic post-natal interventions.

For the baby, there are other interventions like natural Ayurvedic immunisation herbs, baby abhyanga massage, and other interventions mentioned in our Ayurvedic Post Natal Care Plan.

How long to Breastfeed for

Ayurveda recommends breastfeeding for up to anywhere between 1-3 years.
2-3 years is ideal, but consideration is given to the mother's energy levels.
Note, you should not breastfeed while pregnant, and if pregnancy manifests while breastfeeding, Ayurveda advises to stop breastfeeding so as to not take away nutrition supplied to the fetus.

When to introduce solid foods? (Auspicious Ritual: Anna Prāśana)

The very first time you feed your baby solid food is a very special and auspicious activity that is considered a rite of passage according to Ayurveda.
Introducing solid foods, known as “Anna Prāśana” अन्न प्राशन is one of the 16 Purificatory Rites of Passage (“Ṣoḍaśa Saṃskāra” षोडश संस्कार)
The very first time you should feed your baby IS at an auspicious time: when the baby is 6 months and 6 days or 5 months and 5 days; either suffice when it comes to auspiciousness for this rite of passage.
You can also find a specific muhurta (auspicious time period) for your baby, by contacting a Jyotish Vedic Astrologer.

What food do I first feed my baby?

The very first food to feed your baby at an auspicious time is cooked rice with a tiny bit of raw sugar (optional), milk and ghee.

First Food Recipe: Smooth Rice Porridge

  1. Add ½ tsp of ghee in a pot and let it melt and warm.
  2. Add 1tsp of rice or rice ground* (better because more fibrous) and fry/toast in the ghee.
  3. Add 2.5 cups of water and cook well for another 5 minutes or so.
  4. When the rice is cooked well, add ¼ - ½ cup of non-homogenised full-cream cow’s milk and bring to a “milk boil” (not a strong boil like water, milder so that the milk is boiled).
  5. Add a small pinch of quality raw sugar or organic jaggery (ensure it has no salt) and mix in (optional).
  6. When it starts becoming thick it is ready to eat.
sitting baby looking and smiling at food
Which rice to use?
Use rice that is old (at least 6-12 months) and that grows as local to you as possible. White or red rice is ideal for this initial feeding.
*First soak the rice for 30 mins and then lightly dry roast the rice on a fry pain and then grind into a coarse powder to make a coarse rice flour.
Administering Instructions for Rice Porridge
  1. Dip a gold ring or silver spoon (these metals boost immunity) in the porridge and give to baby to suck with your right hand.
  2. Even that one little feed is enough.
  3. This can be a regular food for the baby.
  4. Parents or family can have the rest of the rice porridge.

General Notes About Solid Food Introduction for Babies

No/Very Little Salt and Sugar
Preventing habitation to these tastes will prevent blood sugar, diabetes and blood pressure issues. All vegetables and fruits have all the tastes, so no need for high concentrations of salt and sugar. A very little amount of salt and sometimes sugar in cooking is fine.
Ghee is So Important!
Ghee promotes the intelligence and intellect of the baby. It is also very important for the post-natal rejuvenation of mum.
One Food at a Time: Take it Slow
Start one food at a time give that for 10-15 days before any other food is introduced. Do not combine many new foods together.
First, Soft Foods – Start with soft foods like porridges, banana and soft fruits, carrots, pumpkin and soft vegetables.

What If I Have to Feed My Baby Before 5 Months and 5 Days or have Insufficient Breast Milk?

If you are not getting enough breast milk, refer to our Ayurvedic Post Natal Care Plan and take the recommended herbs and protocols.
If still milk supply is inadequate, you can gradually introduce warm (but fully boiled) cows and goats milk in an appropriate way as well as formula if necessary to supplement breast milk.

First Two Weeks of Solid Food

  1. Grains and Legumes – Lightly dry fry on a pan and then grind into a powder to be ready to cook. Grinding the rice/legume rather than buying powder maintains the fiber.
  2. Little fruit – One fruit at a time. Soft fruits like banana, cooked apple or cooked pear. Whatever is in season, local and organic.
  3. Spices – Add a very little amount of cumin, ajwain and very very little salt.
  4. Ghee – A lot of ghee is the most important.

Baby Food Mix - Best Stable Food Recipe

Give at 6 - 12 months of age or longer. Provides strong bone and bodily tissue formation.
It's fine to make the initial dry mixture in batches that last for 10-15 days.
Ingredients:
Measure 1/2 cup each of:
  1. Split yellow mung dahl
  2. Toor dahl
  3. Urad dahl
  4. Ragi (red finger millet) (optional, more cooling).
  5. Rice
Preparation method:
  1. Wash these legumes/grains and soak each one separately in water for one hour
  2. Drain well and wash again
  3. Dry roast them in a pan all together till lightly browned, along with a teaspoon of cumin and ajwain seeds.
  4. Grind the mix in a blender into fine granules (may need to use a sieve to remove and re-grind larger pieces).
  5. This mixture can be stored and then cooked as needed for each meal.
Cooking method:
    1. Boil a small amount of water in a pan and add the dahl/grain mixture gradually, stirring well to remove any lumps.
    2. Cook on low heat for a minimum of 10 minutes or more, stirring frequently till the mixture is smooth and well-cooked (add more hot water as needed).
    3. Stir in a little ghee at the end, before serving.

7 Months – Solid Food Introduction

  • Now is the time to start introducing vegetables.
  • Whatever you give the baby at 7 months, he will not dislike now or in the future. This is why you must give them all the healthy vegetables (e.g. greens, bitter gourd/melon, cabbage, etc.) and healthy fruits
  • Continue rice and dahls made into a porridge.
  • Vegetables: zucchini, squash, carrot, snake gourd, bottle gourd, bitter melon.
  • See below for more recipes to introduce at 7 months.

8 Months – Solid Food Introduction

  • You can introduce quinoa and more vegetables.
  • Mash carrots, beetroot and spinach are good.
Vegetables and Fruit slices

Animal Milk - Food Introduction

Cow's Milk (Introduce after 1 year old):
Prepare milk according to this recipe Hot Milk Elixir.
Animal Milks for Baby:
Goat's milk - goat eats every leaf - all medicinal values, boil and spices, once every 2 months (also this often for adults).
Donkey's milk once in a lifetime before 1 year to remove Kapha doshas. Boil milk with an equal quantity of water like all kinds of milk.

If Your Baby is Experiencing a Cold, Flu or Any Immune & Respiratory Symptoms:

  1. Boil ½ cup of non-homogesnised full-cream cow's milk + ½ cup of water
  2. Add a tiny pinch of turmeric powder
  3. Chop 4-5 garlic cloves, keep aside for 15 minutes (allow rasayana and beneficial components to release) and tie into bolous.
  4. Dip the raw garlic poultice into the milk to infuse some garlic in the milk (improves immunity a lot) - only add if baby likes the taste as nausea might come. Baby will probably get used to it.
  5. Crush some ajwain seeds in a poultice and also dip for immunity.
  6. Add one baby-sized pinch of swasakasantak yog, mix well and drink.

Herbs for Baby

These are ancient natural ayurvedic herbal remedies for babies:

Constipation Remedies for Babies

It is very important for the baby to have bowel motions every day. This allows the entire system to build for later on.
If constipation is there, please look at the foods the baby is eating and assess the overall health of mum.
Below are some remedies for constipation if it comes in children:
  • Tamarind stick - Inside a bunch of raw tamarind you will find a soft, flexible stick the size of a finger or bigger. With a tiny bit of tamarind on the end (like a match stick), stick it up the anus (very shortly, less than half an in deep). The baby will immediately have bowel motion.
  • Slowly massage clockwise circulate coconut oil in the navel.
  • Fibrous food for mother and child.
  • If still not working – 1 very small pinch of shodana vati powder in hot water before dinner with or without sweet lime.

Remedies for Babies with Digestive Problems

  • “Ajwain breath” - When crying because of stomach/colic pain, the mother must chew ajwain seeds and blow “ajwain air” into the child's mouth. Gives immediate relief to the stomach.
  • Janamghati (herb) - till 1 year - digestive problems.
  • Bonnissan (herb) - after 1 year, you can give forever. For digestion and to increase appetite.

Understanding Diabetes & Blood Sugar, Self-Management, Nutritional Flexibility & Chronic Disease Blessings | Drew Harrisberg #026

About Drew Harrisberg

Drew is an exercise physiologist, sports scientist, diabetes educator, and most importantly, a happy and healthy guy thriving with type 1 diabetes.

In This Episode We Discuss

The Diabetes Pandemic of Today

Nearly 1 million Australians

India - 1 in 4 have pre-diabetes diabetes! (14% pre, 9% diabetes).

Americans - one third of Americans (almost 100 million Americans) are pre-diabetic, and 90% of them don’t know it!. Moreover, many of them think they are maintaining what they call a healthy diet!. - Undiagnosed is the scary part.
~ Study by the CDC (Centres for Disease Control and Prevention)

Drews Story

Diabetes creeping up - Drew falling asleep in an important job interview and worse, while driving!

What Is Type 1 Diabetes

  • An auto-immune disease where your body mistakingly kills off the beta-cells of your pancreas that produces insulin (required to metabolise glucose from food), thinking that the beta-cells are foreign invaders.
  • Type 1 Diabetes as an incurable, life-long disease that requires high maintenance.
  • Rare cases to cure Type 1 Diabetes - regenerate the pancreas to be able to perform its function.
  • People with Type 1 diabetes have to administer exogenous insulin via injections or a pump to metabolise food.

Auto-Immune Diseases

Dairy and Type 1 Diabetes
A1 beta-casein having a structure of amino acids that looks very soar to the structure of amino acids in the pancreas cells.

Type 2 Diabetes

Insulin doesn’t work well leading to high blood sugar.

Insulin Resistance

  • Insulin inefficiency. An inability for insulin to do its job properly.
  • Insulin is designed to drive glucose from your blood into a tissue, like an organ or your brain. It is needs to accompany glucose during the transportation process.
  • Then, that tissue or organ etc. will use that as fuel: burn or store the glucose.
  • Insulin is also the most powerful anabolic hormone in your body.
  • + heaps more functions.
  • Insulin resistance is caused by the accumulation of excess fat in tissues that are not designed to store large quantities of fat.
  • When you are storing excess fatty acids in areas like the liver and muscles - their ability to uptake glucose gets compromised.

How Blood Sugar Rises:

  • Foods > We explode with sugar into the blood stream.
  • Sugars (glucose) are digested, forcing the pancreas to produce excess insulin to escort the glucose out of the blood stream into the cells.
  • Overtime, the pancreas is worn out from insulin levels going up again and again and our blood stream cannot handle these injections of sugar in the blood.
  • Our cells and muscles become resistant. They cannot tolerate any more sugar.
  • It lingers in the blood, but the blood has to do something with it.
  • It takes the sugar and converts it into triglycerides, belly fat, obesity or engage in Glycation - where it sticks to proteins and runs through the blood stream and becomes sticky and irritating and congests and damages the arterial walls. Increases cardiovascular damage and risk and risk of cancer and clot risks.
    • Glycation causes damage to collagen and elastin - causing wrinkles but more importantly, damages the health and elasticity of the skin that lines the arteries, heart, gut and lungs.

“Legs of Lead” as a symptom for excess glucose in your blood.

Complications of having excess glucose in your blood (high blood sugar) for to long.

The "normal range" for blood sugar is not adequate.

Fasting blood sugar: 80-120mg/dL (USA) or 4.8-7.8mmol/L (Millimoles per Litre).

Studies have shown above 85mg/dL or 4.7mmol/L makes you at risk for degenerative diseases such as cardiovascular disease. Digestive tract cancers.

Between 70-85mg/dL or 3.9-4.7 is closer to what Dylan adheres to.

Anecdotal experience over scientifically proven studies

People with type 1 diabetes get a deep insight into their health with the vast experiments they perform on theirselves.

Ayurveda’s Approach to Diabetes

  • Managing Type 1 Diabetes with herbs thousands years ago before science created exogenous insulin.
  • Bhasmas - metallic preparations used as medicine in Ayurveda.
  • In Ayurveda, there are 20 types of diabetes an pre-diabetes mentioned, called “Prameha” and “Madhumeha.”

Controlling your health and control in general is overrated

The circadian rhythms of blood glucose and liver function

High Fat Ketogenic Diet and Blood Sugar

  • Short term can be good, long term can be a big issue.
  • Lack of carbohydrates in the diet means the body forgets how to metabolise carbs, then when it does, it is very problematic and requires a lot of insulin to metabolise a little amount of carbs (insulin resistance).

Lipids and Kapha Dosha involved

  • Intramyocellular lipids - fat in the muscle cells.
  • Intrahepatocellular Lipids (IHCL)  - fat in the liver cells.
  • Just like in kapha in Ayurveda and its relationship with diabetes pathogenesis (prameha samprapti).

Insulin Therapy

The potential dangers of insulin and the importance of accurate dosing.

Role of exercise in insulin resistance.

Exercise induced glut4 trans-location or non insulin glut4 translocation.

GLUT4 is the predominant glucose transporter isoform expressed in the body (skeletal muscle).

The importance of walking.

Drew can reduce his insulin requirements by 50% with walking 10-15mins after a meal.

Diet, Nutrition and Blood Sugar

Simple principles - Stick to whole foods, avoid processed foods, ie. anything thats in a package.

Moderation - not a clear message.

Metabolic Flexibility

  • Fat Metabolism vs. Sugar Metabolism - Two sources of fuel.
  • Being able to tolerate carbohydrates and fat.
  • Intuitive eating on a day-to-day basis.
Soup: one of the lightest and easy-to-digest meal

Routine with flexibility

The blessing a chronic disease diagnosis and adversity.

Cooked vs. Raw Food Diet: Transcend Food Fads | Dylan Smith #025

Transcend food fads and diets and adhere to the ultimate diet: Natures Diet.

The Dubious Flexibility of Scientific Literature

When engaging in discussions and dispelling myths of particular health trends, I truely intend to create a balanced argument on both sides. I like to present the pros and cons of both sides, the science and the ancient wisdom, then allow the reader to make an informed decision themselves that applies to their unique self.

According to the science, raw food and cooked food, are both beneficial and our ancestors enjoyed both.

Due to the dubious nature of scientific studies, a more holistic insight is required. Thus, it is wise to consider the traditional sciences that have time tested these topics for thousands of years, as in the case of Ayurveda.

Anthropology: What Did Our Ancestors Eat?

The logic that our ancestors only ate raw foods is flawed, with numerous studies suggesting we have been cooking for almost 2 million years.

Cooking with fire predates homosapians. If you trace your way back, you find the species prior, which were still in our genus, they were homo (human), "homo erectus" to name the precise genus, had fire and passed the torch onto homosapians. This was all found through fossil analysis.

What was the benefits of cooking with fire? The study says:

“Reduced digestive effort…and increased supply of food energy.”
Cooking and the Ecology of Human Origins.

In Ayurveda, the discussion isn’t so narrow as to one is bad and one is good.

Many things are taken into account, including The Eight Factors Determining the Utility of Food:

  1. Prakriti - nature of food articles.
  2. Karana - method of processing.
  3. Samyoga - combination of food articles.
  4. Rasi - quantity.
  5. Desa - habitat of the food and where it is being eaten.
  6. Kala - Time - day or night, age of the person and stage of the disease in the individual.
  7. Upayogasamsthā - rules governing the intake of food. One should no speak, laugh, take in hurry, very slow, etc.
  8. Upayoktrn - wholesomeness of the individual who takes it. This includes "OkaSatmya" - What the individuals ancestors ate, what they were brought up eating, and what they are habituated to eat.

The Importance of Agni (Transformation)

As you see above, Processing (Karana) is one of the Eight Factors Determining the Utility of Food.

Processing or cooking foods is vital. It transforms the food. Usually for the good. Cooking in most cases can remove samskaras ("memories") of the food item and transform the qualities of it.

Example: transforming milk with fire

Take milk from stress-induced, unhappy factory farmed cows for example. When you boil the milk diluted with water, to some extent, the stress chemistry of the cows are removed from the milk.

Take it to the next level by adding some black pepper to further transform the milk as these little pungent black fiery spice balls counter the heavy, damp, mucous creating quality of milk.

There are many ways to process or cook food (detailed below). It is vital to purify the substance, enhance its absorbability for humans and nutritional effect.

“Raw foodists, it is clear, do not fare well. They thrive only in rich modern environments where they depend on eating exceptionally high quality foods.... the implication is clear. We are not like other animals. In most circumstances, we need cooked food.”
~ Harvard Professor Richard Wrangham, “Catching Fire: How Cooking Made Us Human.”

On the other hand...

Common cooking methods can be used to enhance the nutritional value of vegetables, increasing bio-accessibility of health-promoting constituents.

Cooking has the effect of softening the indigestible cellulose, allowing nutrients to be rereleased that may not be when eaten raw.

Cooked foods is not just about nutrients, they are nurturing for your intestinal wall!

Foods that Have A Higher Nutrient Value When Cooked

Artichokes

Cooking artichokes increase their antioxidant levels (steaming is best).

Studies observed the cooking effect on the artichoke antioxidant profile is probably due to matrix softening and increased extractability of compounds.

Asparagus

Cooked asparagus has more antioxidants than raw.

This study assessed "significant and more pronounced" changes during cooking process.

Blueberries

Studies show cooked blueberries can have greater antioxidant levels than fresh.

Baking blueberries changes their polyphenol content.

Note that fruit doesn't need to be cooked since the sun cooks it!

Carrots

Cooked carrots are more nutritious than raw. Steaming or baking whole carrots preserves more of the beta-carotene, studies showed.

The human body converts beta carotene into vitamin A (retinol) - beta carotene is a precursor of vitamin A. We need vitamin A for healthy skin and mucus membranes, our immune system, and good eye health and vision.

Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cabbage

Some studies suggest raw because the heat breaks down the enzyme called tyrosinase, which is a precursor for broccoli to release cancer-fights and ulcer reducing sulforaphanes (which is what elevated broccoli to its superfood status).

Over all, you can’t digest those enzymes.

On the other hand, a perhaps even more health-prompting nutrient, Indole-3-carbinol, is processed only when broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage are cooked.

Indole-3-carbinol has been shown to stop pre-cancerous prostate cells from becoming malignant by inhibiting cell growth and supports apoptosis.

Spinach

Raw spinach - chew it and it tastes chalky because it contains oxalic acid - an organic substance that can interfere with the absorption of essential nutrients like calcium and iron.

A study showed it also attaches to quite a few other vital nutrients, and long-term consumption of foods high in oxalic acid can lead to nutrient deficiencies.

Cooking spinach breaks down oxalic acid.

Tomatoes

Studies showed cooked tomatoes have higher lycopene, a potent antioxidant more powerful then vitamin C, and is particularly useful in helping the body repair damaged tissue, and preventing cancer and heart attacks.

Other studies show vitamin C decreased when being cooked.

Reported Benefit of Raw Food: Cleansing

Yes it is true, raw roods can be cleansing since they have more fibre.

This is why people get good bowel motions - it is going straight out.
They think this is a good thing, but actually, they are not absorbing nourishment.

This can be of benefit for when the body is sick and toxic, like in the case of cancer - as the fibre can scrub the intestines.

But once you are cleansed, raw food is not sustainable.

In the beginning, when lots of raw vegetables or "green juices" are eaten, the system starts to digest the ama (toxins and blockages) because you are not getting enough nourishment, so it is like fasting. Catabolic activity happens. The problems start when the ama is finished and then the body starts to eat the dhatus (healthy  tissues).

Raw Food Will Cause Weight Loss, But You're Losing Healthy Tissues!

Definitely people will loose weight on a raw diet. Due to catabolic action where tissues are broken down, including fat tissue. However, it also depletes other tissues, like bone, bone marrow, and reproductive tissue.

In ‘Catching Fire’, Professor Richard Wrangham wrote:
“Recent studies indicate that low bone mass in the backs and hips of raw foodists was caused by their raw diet.”

There are healthier ways to loose weight: Balance agni and activate healthy tissue metabolism.

Not only will the healthy tissues become depleted, but the digestive fire becomes compromised. And it takes a lot of attentiveness from someone recovering from raw food diet damage.

Overall with cancer, the more vegetables you eat, the better. Plant based diet is key.

In the condition of inflammatory bowels, the very first recommendation is stop eating raw food. While they are cleansing, they are very rough on the intestinal wall. Cleansing is not a suitable diet in this case of sensitive gut.

Reported Benefit of Raw Food: More Energy

Again, this is true but also false.

Raw food takes about 80% more energy to digest than cooked food. Plus it also provides the body with less energy following digestion.

So how is it that raw food makes you feel more energetic?
Because it certainly does, in the short term at least.

You get a short term hit of energy due to the catabolic effect. But then, (few months to a few years later) you are left depleted.

This is why the raw food diet doesn't last to long with people.

Vata Aggravating & Catabolic Effect

Raw food has the qualities of Dry, Light, Cold and Rough.
The vata dosha (bioenergy responsible for movement) also has those qualities.
Thus, according to the natural law of “like increases like,” eating raw foods increase the vata dosha.

Vata is responsible for catabolism - cell reduction.

The Raw Food Diet Has Never Been Time Tested

When a cell breaks down, it is like a star exploding – it releases a lot of energy!

So, if you’ve ever been on a raw food, smoothie or juice diet, for a short period of time you may very well have felt on top of the world!

But this feeling won’t last forever and neither should your raw food diet.

Excess catabolism occurs, where healthy tissues become depleted. Then the Ojas (immunity, vitality, essence of your tissues), also gets reduced.

This is why many of the people I see who have tried raw diets feel great in the short term, and get inflicted with fatigue down the track. You may have experienced this.

People do not stay on the raw vegan diet for long.

Even 10 years is very rare for someone to be on a raw food diet, but those who have been, even that isn’t a long period of time!

Never as a human species have we done this.

Historically the diets of humans last centuries, not 10 years! And they never dipped in and out of fads. They maintained the same diet for generations.

They adhered to the ultimate diet. Natures diet.

Reported Benefit: Reduced Risk of Disease

Not a precise point to argument since people on raw food diets tend to stop eating processed food or a regular western ‘convenience/fast food’ diet.

This processed and unnatural diet is well recognised as the main cause of some of the most common chronic diseases in Western society.

They also eat more fruits and veggies and less meat.

They also tend to be people who care about their health, so tend to make other life-style changes - like sleeping better, meditation, exercise, healthy relationships, less alcohol and smoking etc. - that turn out to benefit their health.

The Wisdom of Ayurveda

As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, I really do try to make the argument balanced. But I just couldn't do that for raw foods.

The reality is, when you acknowledge the time-tested, rich science of Ayurveda, raw food only has a small place in the human diet.

For those who want optimal health and to cure and prevent disease, should primarily cook their food.

The famous Ayurvedic sage, Caraka Samhita, has 10 rules for eating raw food. They are in order of importance, and yep you guessed it, cooking food is included. In fact, it is number one most important for food to be wholesome.

10 Rules For Taking Food:

  1. Food Should be Warm/Cooked:

Reasoning for this from thousands of years ago:

  • It is delicious.
  • After intake it provokes the factors (enzymes) in the abdomen and helps digestion;
  • It gets digested quickly;
  • Helps digestion, fluids and nutrients move downwards (vata anulomana);
  • Maintains detachment of sticky, undigestible, toxic substances (kapha).

And the other 9 rules for food intake:

2. Food Should be Unctuousness (Snigdha)
3. Food taken in Proper Quantity.
4. Intake After Digestion of Previous Meal.
5. Intake of Food Having No Contradictory Potencies (Incompatible food combinations)
6. Intake in Proper Place (Calm environment) and With All Accessories.
7. Intake, Not in Hurry.
8. Intake, Not Too Slow.
9. Intake with Concentration, Self-Confidence and with due regard to his own self.

Reference: Caraka Samhita, Vimana Sthana.

The Eight Factors Determining the Utility of Food

Let's look at more ancient wisdom.

We saw the eight qualities earlier on in this article, lets go more into the second factor, and view the ancient ways of processing substances (that are still practiced today):

Karana - Processing the Substances:

  • Karana (processing) results in the transformation.
  • Transformation of the attributes is effected by:
  • Dilution
  • Application of heat,
  • Cleansing,
  • Churning - e.g. Curd by nature aggravates oedema; when churned, even with the fat content of it remaining intact, it alleviates oedema.
  • Storing,
  • Maturing,
  • Flavouring - e.g. sweet smelling drugs like utpala (Nymphae alba/White water lily) in water.
  • Impregnating - drugs like amalaki in juices.
  • Preservation - Ingredients of Duralabhasava are required to be kept in a jar smeared with ghee for 15 days before use (Chikitsa 15:154).
  • Container - e.g. TriphalaRasayana is to be prepared in a new iron container smeared with the paste of amalaki (Chikitsa 1:3:43)(22-II)

Vegetables That Can Be Eaten Raw (Plants in Salad Form)

There is some balance in Ayurveda after all!

Ayurveda does mention certain vegetables that can be eaten raw. However, if these vegetables are cooked, that is ideal and easier to digest.

Ardraka (Green Ginger)

Tender Radish

  • When taste is not well manifested and tender, it  alleviates vitiated dosas, is light (laghu) and stimulates digestion.
  • When overgrown, it provokes these dosas.

Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum)

Leafy greens - Ajwain, Arjaka (Ocimum gratissimum / Clove Basil / African Basil), Sigru (Moringa oleifera), Saleya (Tringonella foenum-graceum / Fenugreek) , Mrstaka (Brassica nigra / Black Mustard) - Leaves of these vegetables are cordial and palatable.

Bhustrna (Cymbopogon citratus / Lemon Grass).

Dhanyaka (Coriandrum sativum / Coriander)

Palandu (Allium cepa / Onion)

Lasuna (Allium sativum / Garlic) - Can provide its fantastic health benefits when raw.

Source: Caraka Samhita, Vimana Sthana.

Other vegetables okay to eat raw:

  • Beetroot
  • Carrot
  • Cucumber
  • Celery
  • Mint
  • and vegetables with strong pitta characteristics can be eaten raw in limited quantity. Grated is best and at lunch or as snack if agni (digestive fire) is good.

What About Fruit?

Fruit is cooked by nature, by the sun. So when it ripens that is cooked.

What About Nuts?

Nuts you can take raw, but better to cook them - either soaking them, peeling some nuts like almonds, or activating.

Some Tips on Cooking

  • Don’t damage foods with high heat and over-cooking. Lightly steaming, lightly cooking is fine and will enhance health of the intestinal skin.
  • Unless it is soups or stews - they capture the nutrients.
  • Blanch salads and leafy greens.
  • Use pure Clay Pots since they retain the nutrients profoundly.
  • Retain the water.
  • Use some quality oil always when cooking.
  • Eating a little raw food is completely fine. Your diet should be predominately cooked food.

EMF, 5G & Building Biology | Nicole Bijlsma #019

Building Biology: How the Human Environment Affects Human Health.

We take care of our biology and our human skin.
But what about the skin that we reside in, that we live, work and sleep in!
The skin of a building that most of us spend 20+ hours a day in!

*Note there is a silent audio fault gap between 31:05 and 32:44. Then the podcast continues.*

About Nicole Bijlsma

Healthy Home Expert, Nicole Bijlsma is a building biologist, bestselling author, PhD candidate and CEO of the Australian College of Environmental Studies (RTO 21740) which she established in 1999 to educate people about the health hazards in the built environment. Nicole has published in peer-reviewed journals, has written extensively for Body+Soul newspaper, is regularly consulted by the media to discuss electromagnetic fields and toxic chemicals, and lectures in Australia and internationally at medical conferences about environmental health issues. Nicole and her husband Mark manufacture the Abode® cleaning product range (health food store brand) which was developed for people with skin and chemical sensitivities.

In This Episode We Discuss

Building biology - how the human environment affects human health.

Nicole’s story - 10 miscarriages and insomnia due to sleeping next to a smart meter.

The bedroom as the most important room we address when accessing the biology of a building.

EMF and Blue light suppress melatonin, it tricks you're body thinking its day when its night.

What proper sleep actually means.

The importance of paying attention to home appliances, like a solar panel inverter.

Solar Panels & EMF

Improper set up of solar panels emits very high AC electric field and leaks dirty electricity.

Safe set up of solar panels - round shielded cabling which includes both active and neutral wire together. Have metal foil within the shielded cabling and earthing it properly.

4 types of EMF:

  1. AC Electric Fields - created from voltage, electricity under pressure.
  2. AC Magnetic Fields - created from the current. Movement of electrons from building wiring and appliances.
  3. Radio Frequencies - wireless devices.
  4. Dirty electricity - high-frequency spikes.

Metal as an antenna to EMF, e.g. metal titanium in your body, surgical steel wires, metal in the mouth,

Mass Experiment

We have never exposed humanity from cradle to the grave to this amount of radiation.

In the last three decades, we have significantly increased our exposure to man-made EMF one trillion times higher than when our grandparents were children. And that’s before 5G network has been turned on. What is about to happen has never been seen before.
Nicole Bijlsma

5G

  • Nicole believes may not work because to many trees will have to be cut down since trees block the short-wave signals.
  • Instantly kills insects.
  • Not about public health, it’s about dividends for shareholders of the telecommunication industry.
  • 5th Generation for the fourth industrial revolution to support artificial intelligence.

Biological Effects of EMF

  • In 2011, the WHO classified radio frequencies from all wireless devices (induing cellphones) as group 2B carcinogen (potentially can cause cancer).
  • In 2002 the WHO classified magnetic fields from anything that draws current as group 2B carcinogen.
  • Sweat ducts in your skin act as an antenna to EMF and impacts the nervous system.
  • Fatigue, waking up tired.
  • Headaches.
  • Increased risk of fibromyalgia.
  • Increases dyslexia, missing words.

These signals (EMF) communicate with our mitochondria and cause mitochondria dysfunction. It is a mitochondrial poison.

EMF Pathology

EMF starts calcium influx which activates the sympathetic nervous system (“Flight or Fight”) and destroys mitochondria function. Studies show even low-level EMF causes this. You don’t need to have an argument with your family to get stressed, EMF will do it to you!

EMF causes calcium e-flux which causes mitochondrial swelling.

Adrenal stress index is thrashed.

Cell phones 12 feet away activates the sympathetic nervous system.

Near exposure - 52cm from a 2.4 Ghz source.

Calcium Influx

  • EMFs activate voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCCs) - in the outer membrane that surround all our cells.
  • When they are activated they open up, allow excess calcium to flow into the cell.
  • There are hundreds of studies that show when you expose cells to EMFs there is increased intra-cellular calcium and increased calcium signalling.
  • This causes molecular biological trauma.
  • When there's excess calcium in the cell, it increases levels of both nitric oxide (NO) and superoxide. While NO has many beneficial health effects, massively excessive amounts of it reacts with superoxide, forming peroxynitrite, which is an extremely potent oxidant stressor.
  • Peroxynitrites, in turn, break down to form excessive reactive free radicals, which does damage.

EMF radiation activates the VGCCs in the outer cell membrane, triggering a chain reaction of devastating events that, ultimately:

  • Decimates your mitochondrial function (causes them to swell), cell membranes and cellular proteins.
  • Causes severe cellular damage.
  • Results in DNA breaks.
  • Dramatically accelerates your ageing process. Ageing = oxidative stresses and inflammation.
  • Puts you at higher risk for chronic disease. Chronic diseases = stresses and inflammation.

VGCCs Highest Concentrated in the Body

Nervous System and Brain

  • VGCCs - highest density is located in the nervous system.
  • A study showed the nervous system and brain was the #1 organ most sensitive to EMF. Massive changes in the structure of the neurons, dysfunction of synapses.
  • Consequences: anxiety and depression, alzheimer’s and autism.

Heart:

  • The heart is also sensitive. The pacemaker cells
  • Consequences: Tachycardia, heart palpitations (PAC or PVC), cardiac arrhythmia, arterial fibrillation.

Reproduction:

  • They have important locations in reproduction - in both testicles (studies a lot) and ovaries.
  • Evidence showed male and female infertility.
  • Reduce sperm count 2x more in western countries than eastern.
  • Phone in pockets, laptops on laps are zapping genitals.

Suppress Melatonin

EMF and blue light suppress melatonin -  the most anti-cancer neurotransmitter and powerful anti-oxidant you have!

Enhances Permeability of the BBB and Tight Junctions

BBB (Blood Brain Barrier)
Tight Junction (barrier in the cell junction).

Using a cellphone close to your head for at least 30mins / day for 10 years increases your incidence for brain tumor by 270%.

Takes 15-20 years to develop! Accumulative effect.

Our exposure to mould, chemicals, prevalent and inevitable toxins are increased as we become more vulnerable.

This is why EMF sensitivity is identical to chemical sensitivity and mould illnesses.

Add in the fact that we are “pre-polluted” - biotoxins and chemicals are granted free entry into the CNS.

In 2004, researches found an average of 200 industrial chemicals and pollutants in umbilical cord from babies born in US hospitals. ~ WWF 2005, Canada.

What was meant to be cord-blood rich in immune-boosting stem cells, contained pesticides, consumer product ingredients and waste from burning coal, gasoline and garbage.

Alzheimers (Neuro-degenerative disease)

Alley Yohansen - key editor of the journal of patho-phyioslogy. Kawolonksher institute.

A Swedish study in 2005 looked at different villages in parts of Sweden where they looked at homes which have high radiation and looked at homes with low radiation.

Matched a map of these with a map of Alzheimers disease and found an absolute direct correlation.

Half of the population alive right now will die with Alzheimers disease.

Alhoansen said in 2006 if we don’t change our environment there will be an epidemic of brain-related disorders. And they have. It is only going to increase dramatically if people don’t protect themselves.

ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis)

Motor neurone disease.
ALS patients die within 2 years of diagnose. Now on par with MS.

Latency Periods and Accumulative Effect of Toxins

Chemical and EMF sensitivity as a biomarker, warning and blessing to move away from that poison before it causes chronic disease.

Exposing to EMF for more than 2 hours a day for 5-10 years causes the biological effects.

The latest mobile nation report in Australia 2019 showed the average Australian spends 3 hours a day on electronic devices.

The chemical abstract service - the worlds largest data base.

Over 145 million chemicals are registered for use, 90% have never been tested for human health.

Near Fields of EMF:

4 wavelengths away form the source. Thus depends on the source.

50cm away from a 2.4GhZ router.

Double your distance away form the source and you reduce your exposure from 70%.

How to Reduce EMF

  • Don’t put your cellphone next to your head, “keep it away from your person” as the telecommunication industries specify in their product instructions.
  • Use an air tube headpiece.
  • Use loudspeaker.
  • Text instead of talking.
  • Only use in a good reception and when bars are full.
  • Turn Bluetooth and data OFF when you are not using it.
  • Use aeroplane mode more often.
  • Get rid of any wireless, bluetooth earphones like Apple AirPods.
  • Revolutionise and switch your wifi for ethernet (cable plug in).
  • Power down your wifi router.
  • Switch off your wifi router at the power at night when you are not using it.
  • Abhyanga to create a shield of armour.

The microwave oven effect in our living bedrooms - The dangers of incorrect shielding of rooms or homes.

Voltage Strength Comparisons

The Natural Voltage in the Atmosphere (Schulman Resonance) - 7.83 Hz - 100Hz per second.
The Voltage of 3G and Current Wifi - 2.45 GHz (2.45 billion hertz).
The Voltage of 5G - 10 - 80 GHz.

Countries Taking Action Against 5G

  • Austria was progressive.
  • France limited wireless use in schools.
  • Brussels, Belgium became the first major city in the world to halt 5G development on the basis that its “citizens were not to be used as guinea pigs.”
  • The Netherlands switches their 5G structure on in one suburb and birds died instantly, so they stopped their 5G rollout.
  • Florence, Italy banned it.

If you want to take action against 5G, Join your local STOP 5G groups - search that on facebook and find the groups.

EMF Meters - How to read EMF and experiment yourself.

PEMF (pulsated electromagnetic fields) devices, stickers on phones. - Do they really mitigate harmful non-native EMF? Nicole thinks they are bullshit because she cannot measure differences with them and has not seen sufficient evidence.

Other Considerations in Building Biology

Seperate your garage from the rest of your house

Obnoxious gasses and traffic pollutants seep from the car into the house. Even after the car is switched off.

Lipstick

  • Lead is found in most lipsticks, even organic ones because the pigments are mined from the ground.
  • Pregnant women and women in reproductive age should not wear coloured lipsticks.

Tampons

  • Cotton - the dirtiest crop out there.
  • Over 95% of conventional cotton has glyphosate.
  • Into the permeable vagina monthly.
  • Polyester - derived from petroleum. Can potentially have heavy metals.
  • “Fragrances” - can be a thousand different chemicals.
  • Dioxin - a toxic by-product. Next to glyphosate one of the most dangerous chemicals in existence.
  • Biological effects - endometriosis, infertility, immune disruptions, pelvic inflammatory disease, diabetes, birth defects, breast cancer, reproductive cancer.
  • Glyphosate - hormone disrupting, disrupts your nerves, inflammatory. Found in 85% of tampons (Argentina study).

The Menstrual Cycle - An Important Detoxification Process
It should be honoured with warm and iron-rich foods.

Bone Broths - know your bones - Bones can hold onto lead.

Mould

The new asbestos. Pandemic across the world.

Cause of mould - moisture.

  • Micro-organisms require food and moisture to thrive.
  • Up to 50% of indoor environments in Australia are affected by dampness, which is the prime condition for mould growth.
  • Once moisture sits on a surface for more than 48 hours, the microbes on the surface will attempt to take over the space by producing endotoxins, mycotoxins (toxic substance produced by a fungus) and microbial Volatile (easily evaporated) Organic Compounds (by-products) which can dramatically impact the indoor air quality and affect the health of the occupants.

Food for mould - Pre-digested particle board and cheap timbers has become the perfect fast food for mould rather than natural building materials like hardwood timbers that naturally contain resins that are resistant to fungal attack.

Mould can multiply itself in the presence of EMF.

24% of the population cannot create antibodies to mould; so every time they go into a water-damaged building, it results in inflammation in their brain and their body which can be misdiagnosed as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or even worse, a mental illness

Mould is a detoxification issue.

Some biological effects of mould exposure:

  • Reoccurring colds
  • Developing pneumonia in a healthy person.

About Miriam Kattumuri

From a very young age, Miriam believed that in order to enjoy a healthy life one must maintain a positive interaction with the environment.

Her love for people and environment was the motivation in creating a unique line of cookware made from the purity of nature.  One that is timeless and yet as new as tomorrow – All-Natural clay cookware!

About 8 years ago, her own personal encounter with diabetes and the realization that the world around only seems to be getting sicker every day, set her off on a journey traveling the world looking for healing in the most fundamental of place – our food.  Her research led her to know the damage to food because of cooking in the wrong pots and pans, and so her search continued, now with more direction, to find the way to cook food without damaging it’s worth.  After testing cookware made from every kind of material, from the most expensive to the least, she discovered that All-Natural clay – nature’s own gift – has been from time unknown and still was, the safest and healthiest!  She then returned home to create her own line of pots and pans made from this material without any additives and no compromises to purity and strength. Miriams Earthen Cookware was born from this labor of love.

Today Miriam can be seen working on creating machine jigs and tools to efficiently create new products for her line, and on expanding marketing, but her hand is still in the clay, spinning utility and beauty from this wonderful gift of nature.  She will also be the first to let you know that her vision and mission is a reality today greatly because of her team of hard-working and skillful individuals and her supportive family, to whom she is always grateful.  Miriam is a graduate of Psychology from Women’s Christian College, Chennai India.  And the mother of 4 beautiful children.

In This Episode We Discuss

Food (ahara) is one of the three pillars of health (Traya UpaSthambha) according to Ayurveda. Food nourishes your tissues and sustains life!

You NEED to include the cook ware you are cooking in.

The healthiest (clay) cookware on the planet!

How Miriam Got into Cookware
She was part of the diabetes pandemic and cured that along with other health issues with healthy cookware!

Miriam's story

“After the birth of my son, when he was about 8-9 months old, I started getting clear dreams between 3-4 am of making cooking pots from clay, pure clay and just clay without any chemical additives.  The ideas flooded in, images, descriptions… I had to wake up and take notes.”

Miriam's extensive search for the purest and healthiest cookware in the world.

Miriam's work attracted religious leaders and experts from all fields.

The Epidemic of Diabetes in the World, Especially India and USA

  • About 50% of the world population of diabetes is in India.
  • One million people die a year from diabetes in India.
  • 85% of Americans are pre-diabetic.

Different Types of Materials of Cookware

Teflon - containing toxins like Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) that can kill birds just from the fumes from heat.

Non-stick coatings -  Toxins like Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA), Lead, Cadmium, Arsenic, Feldspar, Petalite (an ore of lithium) from the non-stick coating.

Our minds are not meant to remember these chemical names.

Aluminium - A known neurotoxin. Aluminium foil does not cause this so much but heat, makes this pseudo-nutrients leech out a lot more. Also acidic foods bring the metals out. e.g. tomato sauce.

The Metal Ions/Chemicals Biological Reaction:

  • In the presence of heat, they get bound to the food and enter into our digestive systems.
  • From their they are booked down along with the food and are absorbed by the tissues of the body.
  • Foreign elements activate the immune system to fight and eliminate it. It is an unsustainable and a recipe for immune-dysfunction for the immune system to be working every meal 3-4 meals a day, everyday!

Pure Clay Pots contains all the five elements (PanchaMaha bhutas) and are living entities.

Stainless Steel

  • This alloy (a mixture of different metals) is available in different grades, the popular ones (general purpose) are 304 and 316.
  • The 304-grade stainless steel contains elements like Chromium, Nickel, Carbon, Manganese, and Silicon.
  • 316 also has high levels of Nickel and Molybdenum.
  • What is the core - aluminium? When it gets scratched the core comes out.
  • All these elements are highly reactive and break down as ions when food is cooked in Stainless steel cookware.
  • These combine with nutrients in food and form toxic compounds that are dangerous in the body.
  • For instance, a very small amount of concentration of nickel can cause kidney dysfunction, low blood pressure, muscle tremors, oral cancer, skin problems etc.

Cast iron and iron

  • Good method to get iron in the body but beware those with excess iron.
  • Better not cook food with water in iron.
  • High near-infrared heat from the metal  = damages delicate nutrients in food.

Copper (Tamra)

  • Great to leave water in a copper cup overnight.
  • Beware sour and high-level pH.
  • It is reactive metal - reacts with other chemicals to create an undesirable end product.
  • High near-infrared heat from the metal = damages delicate nutrients in food.
  • You lose a lot of steam, which is essentially water-soluble nutrients depleting the food.

Ceramics

  • Man-made material made to replicate clay.
  • Contains 0-9% a refined form of natural clay (usually secondary clay). - Same with Porcelain and Stoneware.
  • They contain many toxic elements.
  • Lead in an integral part of the ceramics.

Pots finished with Colourless or Transparent Glazes

  • Where you can see the colour of the clay but it's still glazed and treated with chemicals, oxides and metals.

The Amazing Health and Culinary Benefits of Pure Clay

Pure Clay Breathes

  • Exhale - It pulls toxins from the food and pushes it out of the walls of the pot to the outside walls of the pot.
  • Inhale - It breathes in oxygen to fortify the food with prana (life-force).
  • Like soil self-cleansing and regulating.

Pure Clay Better for Blood Sugar, Diabetes and Insulin Management

  • Damaging heat in conventional cookware destroys the complex (and delicate) carbs and leaves an overload of simple carbs.
  • If the pot burns your fingers it burns the delicate complex carbs!
  • We need a balanced diet of both simple and complex carbs for optimal insulin management.
  • Excess simple carbs require high insulin to break down these carbs into energy which leads to shorts bursts of energy which is a poor way to utilise the insulin hormone.
  • Plus there are a low amount of complex-carbs which is low GI and helps the pancreas to produce insulin.
  • This miss-management of insulin + low amount of complex carbs causes the body to not produce enough insulin to transport, store & utilise glucose (carbs when digested become glucose), resulting in a condition with excessive glucose in the blood — diabetes!

The food-friendly heat of pure clay pots gently cooks the nutrients keeping intact both the simple and complex carbs, and the essential vitamins and minerals.

Complex carbs are more sustained energy, so energy levels are optimised.

Losing Weight from Cooking in Pure Clay

Keeping the Food’s Nutrients Intact - Unique Gentle Heating Mechanism

  • Not just that - the heat from these (earthen) pots is different -- they cook without destroying even the most delicate nutrients!
  • In my experience, the food isn’t so “extracted,” it is kept intact, the nutrients are concealed into one nourishing an delicious dish.
  • Harsh, near-infrared heat from the walls of metals and man-made materials like ceramic/enameled/glazed pots destroy a lot of these nutrients.
  • Touch a metal/ceramic pot 5-10 minutes into cooking and it can burn your hand, food is also tissue matter and is prone to damage with that kind of heat.
  • On the other hand, the gentle far-infrared heat from MEC's walls penetrates deeply without destroying these important nutrients, all of it taking less heat and about the same amount of time or less (on a gas stove)! - You touch it and it doesn’t burn!
  • Study on nutrient retention: 28-30% of the nutrients remain in toor dhal in a pressure cooker vs. 98-100% of the nutrients remain in a pure clay pot.

The Purity of Clay Pots

  • The clay is pure and the pots made without any additives. MEC go to great lengths to fully test our clay before harvesting.
  • They are made by hand on a high spinning pottery wheel, so the clay remains pure and no additives are needed.
  • The clay we use is of the highest quality natural clay called primary clay or MEC's pure clay™ (rich in nutrients!). It has no metals, oxides, chemicals, toxins.
  • Even though we know that primary clay does not have toxins, we test for soil contaminants, the history of the land is evaluated going back 200 years and the clay is verified to be of the highest quality.
  • It is harvested from 20-25 feet below the surface.

Steam Condensing: No Loss of Water-Soluble Nutrients

  • Most of the steam generated in food is water-soluble nutrients.
  • Out of the 13 essential vitamins and minerals, 9 are water-soluble, which means they dissolve in water, is quickly used in the body and needs to be replenished every day.
  • Steam leaves the pot also makes the food lighter.

Invigorate with Prana: Cook in the Presence of Oxygen

  • As the temperature goes up inside the pot, the higher pressure draws in air through the semi-porous walls, fortifying food with much-needed oxygen.
  • This is a stark contrast to food cooked in an airless/lifeless environment in regular cookware.
  • Another reason why you shouldn’t glaze the pots.

Miriams Earthen Cookware (MEC): A Green and Sustainable Company:

  • Low Cost!
  • Green and sustainable.
  • Innovating and testing methods of clay preparation, processing, making, finishing, firing, to yield a product untouched by chemicals, additives or contaminants typically used in almost all making methods of cookware.
  • Takes less energy - heat and time, to cook the foods.
  • Pulp (eggs) - sustainable packing material.
  • Carbon neutral.

Ayurvedic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy

Yay! You, your friend or family member is pregnant! Congratulations. I have written this guide and am here to assist you through this exciting (and sometimes scary) period of transition and growth.

According to Ayurveda, pregnancy and delivery can be the most rejuvenating experience of a women’s life, during which every cell of the mother’s body can be transformed. Unfortunately, in the west we did not get that knowledge and mothers often pay dearly with health concerns after a pregnancy.

During pregnancy, everything that the mother-to-be touches, smells, tastes, hears and sees has an imprinting influence on the foetus. Her actions not only form various health and physiological features of the future baby, but blueprint and dwell with the unborn human for their whole life which influences their health, even through old age.

That being said, this is a time for the pregnant lady to relax, retreat and do what she desires. There should be minimal restrictions and rules (these are below). She should be treated like a queen (fellas, I know you always do) and follow her desires with little friction.

Guidelines for Throughout the Whole Pregnancy

Flood your Life with Sattva

Everything the mum-to-be does should be sattvic for both the mother and child. Sattva is a quality in us that translates to “purity.” If Sattva is increased, then so is our inner stillness, clarity of mind and contentment. Love radiates and flows in abundance, while the hormone oxytocin (also known as the “bonding/loving hormone”) is simultaneously secreting.

Recommendations to enhance sattva in her mind, body and spirit:

  • Fresh, seasonal whole-foods cooked with love is sattvic food.
  • Create a nourishing and calm environment in your home and avoid stimulating and toxic (rajasic) environments like loud music and polluted air.
  • Surround yourself with loving, like-minded people and avoid toxic relationships and people who stress you out.

Self-Oil-Massage - It is always better for the soon-to-be-mum to do self-massage rather than getting done by a practitioner. If you don't feel like it, no need to do self-abhyanga in the first 6 months.

If receiving a massage from a practitioner, it should be a very, very light abhyanga, without touching the belly.
Avoid all treatments from another practitioner in the first trimester and eighth month.

Daily Meditation - The key to a healthy pregnancy and happy mother and baby. The foetus also absorbs her peaceful and alert attitude. Vedic meditation is recommended.

Reduce EMF (Electro-Magnetic-Field) Exposure

Wireless devices emit signals (EMF) that communicate with our mitochondria and cause mitochondrial dysfunction, which is a birth for many diseases. It also generates free radicals, dehydrates our body and thrashes our adrenal stress index. You definitely don’t want to expose your vulnerable foetus to EMFs. Mainstream medicine already knows this by restricting x-rays etc., but has not yet realised the danger of wireless devices like mobile phones, laptops, wifi etc.

Ways to Reduce EMF

  • Turn your wifi, smart TVs, mobile phone off at night and when you are not using them.
  • Whenever your mobile phone is near your body, keep it on aeroplane mode.
  • Avoid high density EMF environments that are like being in a microwave. Offices for example.
  • Purchase Belly Armour - a comfy shielding material to wear when you're out and about.
  • Neutralise nnEMFs with grounding in nature - barefoot on earth, walking on beach, swimming in natural bodies of ocean.

Reduce Ultrasounds

Unnecessary excess radiation. Studies show they do not improve birth outcomes. Get one mid-pregnancy, at 22 weeks to check body parts.

Reduce Aeroplanes

Studies showed flight attendants had a double chance of miscarriages because of the dense radiation exposure. Also, flying is probably the number one activity that aggravates vata the most.

Sleep On Your Left Side

Best to not sleep during the day, as proper night time sleep is essential.

Listen to Vedic Chants

Primordial sounds vibrate to the foetus to enliven desired aspects of consciousness. The vedic sounds also increase Sattva in the pregnant lady. Some good chants to listen to are the Bhagavad Gita and Hanuman mantras.

Balance Vata

The major theme during pregnancy is to balance vata, the energy of the nervous system. This is because the growth of the foetus and the process of giving birth is governed by Apana-Vata, the downward moving Sub-dosha of Vata. In cases of stress and tiredness, the upward-moving vata – called prana vata – has to step in and is redirected downward to support the needs of the baby. Lack of prana means lack of joyful feelings of pregnancy, which can leave the mum exhausted, depleted, tired and even depressed postpartum.

The key to balance vata is:

  1. Warmth (warm, cooked, nourishing foods, warm climate)
  2. Regularity (regular sleep times, meal times, meditation, regular bowel motions etc.)
  3. Rest - As much as possible. Times are designated to carry out work, travel or anything that requires strain (5th and 6th month).

All the recommendations in this article balance vata.

All 3 of your doshas are aggravated by the significant transition of pregnancy.

Correcting imbalances while pregnant is much easier than once the child is born! Of course it would be ideal if the woman could balance the doshas before conception.

DIET and HERBS

Foods to Avoid Throughout the Whole Pregnancy

  • Papaya - Excess downward movement (Vata anulomana) and too much heat.
  • Pineapple - Certain enzymes which cause miscarriage and too much heat.
  • Undercooked meat (beef and pork) - A risk of contracting toxoplasmosis, parasitic disease that can infect the baby and produce many symptoms that vary from premature delivery and low birth weight, to malformations and mental retardation.
  • Raw and undercooked foods, especially leafy greens, beans and lentils.
  • Raw Fish and Seafood - includes sushi and all shellfish. Some bacteria like listeria and some parasites like anisakis can be found in contaminated seafood; they produce an intestinal infection, which can lead to dehydration. Fever and dehydration during pregnancy can be linked to abortion or preterm birth.
  • Seafood High in Mercury - The bigger and older the fish, the more likely that it’s contaminated with mercury. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) encourages pregnant women to avoid swordfish, shark, king mackerel, and tilefish. According to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, pregnant women shouldn't exceed two seafood meals per week.
  • Raw Eggs - Can be contaminated with harmful bacteria, especially salmonella, which can produce a severe intestinal infection that leads to high fever and dehydration, which can be harmful for the baby. Avoid all products that may contain raw eggs, such as homemade dressings, mayonnaise, and eggnog.
  • Caffeine - you should not exceed 200 mg per day. Caffeine is a stimulant, and it may increase your heart rate and your blood pressure, both of which are not recommended during pregnancy. It crosses the placenta to your baby, increasing it's heart rate as well. This has been linked to prematurity, miscarriage, and low birth weight. A cup of coffee may contain anywhere from 150 to 400 mg of caffeine, depending on the type and brew.
  • Hot spicy foods.
  • Artificial flavours, preservatives and chemical additives.
  • Left-overs - Opposite to sattvic food (tamasic).
  • Excess honey - Too heating.
  • Shodana Vati / Triphala / Laxatives / Excess detox foods/herbs - Laxative herbs that cause vata anulomana should strictly be avoided in the first trimester, and also avoided for the rest of pregnancy.

Foods to Avoid Part of the Pregnancy

  • Hing (Asafoetida) - Avoid in first trimester. Vata anulomana and sharp quality, breaks stagnation. Also no external application.
  • Turmeric - For the first 6 months for those sensitive like older pregnant ladies and those prone to miscarriages. A little turmeric is fine but excess is too heating.
  • Raisins in excess.

Indicated Diet

Other than the foods to avoid, don’t restrict yourself too much and honour cravings.
Remember, you are eating for two body types, so you should not follow a strict diet for one body type. Honour your unique cravings in moderation, especially from the fourth month when the cravings you experience are more likely those of the baby.

  • Sweet taste - It is the most sattvic or wholesome for the baby. Dates, fresh breads cooked without oils, whole grains, rice, fruits, quinoa, cooked beetroot, carrot, sweet potato, hot milk, porridge.
  • Ghee, coconut oil.
  • Hot milk - one of the most nourishing, immunity boosting and ojas building foods.
  • Kitchari
  • Almonds soaked overnight then peeled the following day.

Tips to Help with Constipation during Pregnancy

It is important to have daily morning bowel motions during pregnancy.

  • Eat citrus fruits like oranges and mandarins.
  • Pomegranate.
  • Lots of cooked leafy greens.
  • Psyllium husk is okay after first trimester, but consult a good practitioner regarding psyllium.

Morning Sickness

Morning sickness happens because the foreign body (foetus) changes the hormones and system. Some people are not compatible with this.

This does not mean you are unhealthy, in fact, it is traditionally believed morning sickness makes a baby more stronger and helps it survive.

Nausea Remedies

  • Madiphal rasayana - A fruity liquid Ayurvedic preparation that you take a small sip of whenever nausea is there. (Pictured).
  • Citrus fruits like lime.
  • Honey + ginger.
  • Cut the skin of unripe green lemon with your finger nail and sniff it.
  • Clove, fennel and ajwain powder mixed in equal quantities with unheated honey. (little less ajwain ).

Month-By-Month Pregnancy Insight

First Trimester: Extra Careful

This month is the riskiest for miscarriage. Therefore follow all the rules and diet advice more strictly including lots of rest and avoiding stress, work, travel and sex.

Keep it a secret - Mainly for those who are first time pregnant or have been unsuccessful with conceiving or miscarriages. Ayurveda recommends this to avoid bad energy from external people, known as Dristi Dosha (“Bad Eye”).

Prop the foot end of your bed up 8cm to that you are on a slight tilt towards your head. This helps prevent miscarriage.

Pumsavana Ayruvedic nasal therapy can be given in the second month to strengthen the foetus and the mother's ability to carry.

4th Month: Dhauhrda (“Two Hearts”)

According to Ayurveda, in the fourth month the foetus’s heart is endowed with consciousness and the senses are said to develop.
This month is known asDhauhrda,” which means two hearts. This is because through the arteries, the heart of the foetus is connected with that of the mother. Thus, through these vessels (dhamanis), the feelings of the foetus is transferred to the mother. The mother may feel unusual desires during this period, which are probably the desires of the child. It is advisable to give a pregnant woman whatever she desires.

During this month the women should never sleep during the day as proper night sleep is essential.

Foetal Development:

By the end of this month, the foetus is about 8-10 inches in length and weighs 200 grams or more. The mother will probably start to “show” now. The ears are functioning, and there is evidence that the foetus hears quite a bit; the mother’s voice and heartbeat as well as external noise. The umbilical cord has become an engineering marvel, transporting 280L of fluids per day and completing a round-trip of fluids every 30 seconds.

Anguli (finger), Jathara (GIT) and Katipradesha (pelvic regions) forms in the foetus.

5th and 6th Month: Lenient Time

If you have to work or have sex during pregnancy, this is the time. During sex woman should be on their back only and do not strain abdomen.

You may start Yoni Pichu this month if vata (dryness) is high in the vagina, but please consult a quality practitioner before this.

Foetal Development:

  • End of 5th month - Complete formation of Prusta Vamsa (vertebral column). Why Susruta samhita described to perform Upaveshan samskara (string belt) at 5th months in infants.
  • During 6th month - Mukha (face), nasika (nose), srota (ear), bones and cartilages are formed.
  • From the 6th month, the Buddhi (intelligence) starts to form so whatever you stress or actions you perform, you will give this to the baby.
  • Oil and sweat glands are functioning.
  • The delicate skin of the growing baby is protected from the foetal waters by a special ointment called “vernix.” If the baby were born in the month and given the proper care, he would survive.

7th Month: Nearly there

This month is in maintenance mode for a meticulous part of the pregnancy: the 8th month.

Foetus Development:
The baby now uses the four senses of vision, hearing, taste and touch. They can recognise his mother's voice.

8th Month: Vital Time for Increased Rest

The 8th month is very delicate. Where the subtle nutrient fluid called “Ojas,  that supports vitality and immunity, is transferred from foetus to the mother and back and forth.
This process should not be disturbed as it can leave the baby without or with low Ojas.
Thus, you need to get as much rest as possible and avoid what you are meant to avoid and enhance sattva.

Foetus Development:

  • The skin begins to thicken, with a layer of fat stored underneath for insulation and nourishment.
  • Antibodies increasingly build up.
  • The baby absorbs a3.7L) of amniotic fluid per day; the fluid is completely replaced every three hours.

9th Month: It's Coming!

Foetus Completely Developed:
This month the foetus is endowed with all characters and attains complete development. It can remember it's previous birth (purvajanma) which influences the quality of development.

The baby's heart is pumping 300 gallons of blood per day. They are fully capable of life outside the womb.

Research studies have concluded that an easy birth is highly dependant on a relaxed mind. Thus, surrendering the process of labour is key to a quick birth, as well as meditation.

Yoni Ghee

Soak an organic tampon in Yoni Ghee and then insert into vagina.
This softens and relaxes cervix.
Leave overnight or half the night. Changing it over once is good. Can do every 2-3 nights.
You can start this practice called yoni pichu at 37 weeks pregnant.

Can also do matra basti (small nourishing oil enema) with Special Phala Yoni Ghee.

Yoni Ghee

*Only quality matra basti oil should only be used such as Vital Veda's/Raju's Special Matra Basti Oil or Deva 21 Oilor Special Phala Ghee.

How to bring on labour (if not coming)

  • Abdominal massage - Using a medicated ghee called “Sukha Prasava Ghritam or normal ghee or coconut oil (inferior), apply the ghee on the stomach and massage slowly and lightly in a clockwise direction downward towards the vagina.
  • Ensure you are taking Sukha Prasava Ghritam (“easy to deliver ghee”).
  • Eggplant parmigiana has been reported to bring on labour effectively for many woman.
  • Eat more cumin and leafy vegetables.

IT'S HERE!!

Postpartum, after the baby has exited the womb, is perhaps the most important time to implement Ayurvedic interventions and practices to rejuvenate mum and ensure proper nutrient and immune accumulation for the baby.

6 Tips to Ditch the Microwave Oven

microwave oven

We now know that microwaves have a seriously negative impact on our food and body, and yet many households continue to have one. I admit it can be hard at first to go about ditching the microwave. It is important to therefore understand the other (much healthier) methods of cooking and heating that can be used instead.

You’ve decided to put your health first, so how do you replace the convenience of the microwave? It’s all about becoming more efficient in the kitchen, a skill you will surely develop.

Here are 6 simple tips for those interested in ditching the microwave oven for good...

Plan ahead

1. Soaking lentils and grains reduces their cooking time. You can soak them for about 2 hours and then a cook a dahl dish in 15 minutes. The classical Ayurvedic dish, Kitchari, takes even less time to cook. If you are cooking heavier lentils soak them for longer. The longer you soak, the quicker they will cook. Take care not to sprout the grains by soaking them for too long.

2. Pre-chop: Chop a bunch of veggies, grate fresh ginger and finely chop garlic and keep them categorised in containers ready to be thrown in the oven, your curry, stir fry or to steam a meal. This is not ideal but for those who are time poor.

3. Prepare your meals in advance: For the days when you’re too busy or too tired to cook, prepare 2-3 meals in one go for that day or two. Just be sure to reheat it on the stove. This is not ideal, fresh is always best, but for those who are time poor.

4. Stove Heating: Get familiar with it. Cooking and heating foods this way is faster than you think.

5. Steam Oven: If it’s within your budget or you are doing up a new kitchen, consider getting this awesome new appliance.

6. Learn some quick and easy recipes: Some of quick favourites are Ayurvedic porridge for breakfast, kitchari for lunch/dinner or golden milk elixir for breakfast or dinner.

Detox and Revive

Even radiation in low levels is persistent and can accumulate in your body over time, eventually manifesting as various kinds of disease. Is it radiation that is causing your ailments? Avoiding microwaves, radiation and other toxins is ideal. Also supporting your body daily with herbs and foods to detox the toxins that we invariably encounter.

“You are what you eat” is certainly true.

If you eat heavy, damp, leftover foods you will feel heavy, congested, dull and become prone to depression, sluggishness, fatigue and brain fog.

By comparison, if you eat light, prana-rich food cooked fresh with love you will feel light, energised and full of love!

But also consider how you eat.

In what environment do you eat? How fast do you eat it? How long after the previous meal are you eating it? How do you transform or cook it?

Microwave Ovens ![Danger]! – Are you still using them?

Microwave with a warning sign on top

Are you sacrificing your health for a modern convenience?

Sure, microwaves may seem like a quick and easy solution to cook or heat your food, but healthier cooking methods aren’t that much slower. Plus, by choosing a cooking method that is better for you, you’ll cultivate a love for the ritual of cooking and quickly become a wiz at it. On top of mastering new cooking skills, your body will benefit from the energy and vitality present in a freshly cooked meal. Not convinced? Here’s more about why microwaves have no place anywhere near your food.

How Microwaves Work

Microwaves are essentially radiation bombarding your food and producing heat through causing the water molecules inside to violently vibrate at extremely high frequencies.

Unlike a conventional oven, the microwave environment itself is not actually hot. You can feel this for yourself after the ‘ding’. It’s the water content in food that is heating up the rest of the food and as water is not evenly dispersed in food, that is why the heating in microwaved food is uneven. If there is no water present, the food will not be heated but remain cool - a term dubbed “electrical whiplash.”

What Microwaves Do to Your Food

Zap Food Nutrition

Due to unsustainable farming practices, use of pesticides and soil depletion, our soils sadly lack nutrients, hence so does our food. So now, more than ever, we need to be ensuring proper nutrient intake from fresh foods prepared right.

If you use a microwave, what may have started as a nutritious plate of food has now devolved into “dead food.” The microwave emits a wide range of emf radiation that bounce around the inside of the machine and are absorbed into the food, destroying the nutritional content of your meal. The prana (life-force) has been stripped away.

Nutrients are lost and often what survives has become ‘inactive’ - meaning that your body is not able to access the nutrients remaining.

Studies have shown that:

Doesn’t sound appetising at all, does it?

Alters the Molecular Structure

Microwave high emf (Electro-Magnetic Frequencies) create molecular friction which forcefully distorts and deforms the structure of the water molecules in food.

After you ingest the food the same thing happens to your body’s cells which creates a perfect environment for pathogens. You are what you eat, and after eating microwaved milk and vegetables, one study found a dramatic decrease in the levels of white and red blood cells and haemoglobin (the oxygen transport in blood).

The specific gigahertz frequency of radiation emitted by microwave ovens immediately affects the body’s heart rate. If you experience irregular heartbeat or any chest pain and regularly eat microwaved food, it might be best to stop “nuking” your food.

Causes Cancer

Plastic and paper containers used to heat microwave meals have been found to leach carcinogenic chemicals (BPA, PET, benzene, toluene and xylene) along with other harmful toxins into your food which is then absorbed by your body.

Even without plastic there is evidence that the altered molecular structure can have toxic effects on your DNA and lead to cancer. These geno-toxic effects can be the cause of unexplained headaches, anxiety, dizziness, vertigo, brain fog, depression, nausea, vision problems, tooth and jaw aching or constant thirst.

Becomes Tamasic

Ayurveda considers microwaved foods tamasic or that which causes inertia. The lack of life force makes the food heavy, typically causing depression, sluggishness and fatigue. The altered molecular structure of the food confuses the body’s intelligence causing cancer, brain fog, autoimmune disease and host of other issues. After the food becomes heavy it will turn to undigested food material (ama) which will lodge in a vulnerable channel or tissue in the body and initiate the disease process.
