Do You Really Think The Sun Causes Skin Cancer?

The dominant belief today is that UV light causes melanoma (associated with skin cancer).

Melanoma incidence has risen 23 times from 1935-2012, but dermatologists can’t put their finger on what is causing the current surge.

The ironic thing is, skin cancer rates are getting higher while people are getting exponentially less sun and using more sunscreen.

Let us find out why the surge in melanoma is occurring and learn from society’s lifestyle habits so that we can take control of our health and avoid falling into the category of chronic disease.

This article aims to break the highly misunderstood belief that the sun is a dangerous carcinogen and expose the TRUTH. It is a big step for those to correct their intellect because the majority have been brainwashed to not be able to think clinically and not question authority.

I invite you to learn for your self. Use logic and explore the science. Radical action is required to break social conditioning and learn the truth with an open mind to supersede a fallacy that is so strongly embedded in the poor brains of the majority. That same majority are getting inflicted with chronic disease (including melanoma). Check out the science and statistics then decide for yourself.

How the Theory that the Sun Causes Cancer Arose

The studies that showed UV (Ultraviolet) radiation causes skin cancer were done on nocturnal animals who lived their lives in a toxic nnEMF (non-native electro-magnetic field) environment, under artificial blue light on artificial grounds.

We are the only species that have taken ourselves away from water and natural materials. Every other species constantly and regularly touches water and/or earth.

So when you take a nocturnal animal, such as a rat, away from nature, keep them in an artificial environment inundated with blue light and nnEMF, all while altering their innate circadian rhythms, what do you think causes cancer here?

Other studies came from a petri dish of naked unprotected cells.

Don’t Compare The Studies on Animal Skin to Human Skin

All plants and animals know how much sunlight they need exactly.

Plants close or turn away their leaves in accordance with their molecular light harvesting zones.

Animals seek the shade when the sun is enough, plus they are protected by fur.

Humans lost their fury skin. So we had to develop a completely new concept of skin. No other creature on this planet has complex skin structure like humans.

You need to be very careful when comparing studies done on animals to human biology. You cannot compare our skin to animals!

Red Sunburn is Not Good But Pink Skin is a Healthy Reaction

I want to make it clear that getting burnt so that you are red and your skin peels is not good and can put your health at risk.
On the dimmer side of the spectrum, skin becoming pink from the sun is a healthy reaction.

The Beneficial Pathology of Sunlight Causing Pink Skin

  • Sunlight gives nitric oxide, which is a vassal dilator.
  • This brings Red Blood Cells (RBCs) to the surface from the skin (“dermal pooling”).
  • These RBCs comprise of haemoglobin and porphyrins that come to the surface to absorb UV spectrum to charge up with energy and enhance movement (healthy vata function), so they can perform their essential tasks of oxygenating the whole body and circulating life-force (prana).
  • Blood is trying to absorb UV light. UV is not the enemy.
  • Blood is a magnetohydrodynamic fluid that links the sun to your mitochondria.
  • This is why your skin becomes pink, in order to capture sunlight for these vital bodily functions.

Real Risk Factors For Skin Cancer

Artificial Blue Light

Melanoma incidence has risen 23 times from 1935-2012

This is in accordance with a gorge on artificial light while burying the sun from our life.

  • In the last 100 years, the USA workforce has shifted from 75% outside to 75% inside.
  • Vitamin D3 rates are at historic lows.
  • Outdoor workers have a lower incidence of melanoma than indoor workers.
  • Melanoma rates are higher in those living away from the equator.

In summary, skin cancer rates are getting higher while people are getting exponentially less sun.

It just doesn’t make sense that the sun is what causing this epidemic of skin cancer.

Let's look more into why swapping fake blue light for natural sunlight is a prevailing cause of skin cancer:

Blue Light Destroys Melatonin

Melatonin is an absolutely essential hormone:

  • Maintains Immunity
  • The Body’s Most Powerful Antioxidant
  • Energy Levels and Mitochondrial Health
  • Maintains Circadian Rhythms
  • Regulates All Other Hormones
  • Better Sleep
  • Cognitive Health and Brain Health
  • Weight Loss
  • Healthy Bones and Joint Health
  • Healthy Microbiome
  • Blood Sugar and Metabolic Health

Read more about Melatonin via my article: Melatonin: Benefits and How to Optimise It.

  • All modern indoor (blue) lighting subtract out UV and Infrared light. This worsens problematic (uneven) modern skin pigmentation.
  • Red light has been shown to lower the risk of melanogenesis (skin pigmentation process). Unfortunately, red light has also been subtracted from modern man-made light, further increasing the blue light hazard for uneven skin pigmentation.

Exposing your skin to artificial light means you are absorbing an altered, unnatural spectrum of light that is unharmonious to the skin's photosynthesis processes. This stresses the cells and causes impaired skin physiology, potentially leading to skin cancer.

Cancer is uncontrolled growth and uncoupled growth of cells. Constant blue light is putting stimuli for grow, grow, grow. Along with this is a lack of stable energy which should have been obtained from the sun.

Different light frequencies effect on the skin:

  • UVA (320–400 nm) can induce IPD (immediate pigment darkening) during the first minutes of exposure, which is a transient form of pigmentation and fades away within a few hours. PPD (persistent pigment darkening) appears within hours of higher doses of UVA exposure and persist up to several days or weeks.
  • Visible light (Blue light) (400–700 nm) lies outside of the spectral range of what photo-biologists define as deleterious (harmful) radiation. VL can have a significant impact on producing “uneven pigmentation in skin” (melasma), which is the main factor for photo-ageing. This becomes worse and more uneven if the skin lacks UV. All modern indoor (blue) lighting subtract out UV and IR light, worsening the problematic (uneven) modern skin pigmentation.
  • Red light has been shown to lower the risk of melanogenesis (imbalanced skin pigmentation process) but this colour light has also been subtracted from modern man-made light further increasing the blue light hazard for skin pigmentation.

Note that skin pigmentation is an important human phenotypic trait whose regulation, in spite of recent advances, has not yet been fully understood. Traditionally skin pigmentation is believed as the most important photo-protective factor, since melanin, besides functioning as a broadband UV absorbent, has antioxidant and radical scavenging properties.

Inflamed Gut

Inflammation via the gut affects the vagus nerve which opens the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and makes the brain lose control of the immune system. This deactivates the immune system and leads to cancer by increasing ubiquitin markings and turning on the inflammatory cascade and the growth cascades that all lead to cancer.

Studies show a link between Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Skin Cancer.

UV Intoxication

Very heavy ultra-violet exposure and sunburn can cause skin cancer.

Genetic Predisposition Regarding Skin Type

This is approximately less than 5% of the population.

Hormonal Predisposition

Including Hormones Replacement Therapies.

Ingredients of Skin Care Products

In Ayurveda, we administer herbs through the skin (through medicated oils and pastes) to access deep body tissues more efficiently than even administering herbs internally. Modern science calls this "trans-dermal technology." Chemicals of skin care products can also penetrat the skin and deeper tissues. Rule of thumb: “Only put it on your skin if you can eat it.”

Intake of Photosensitising Drugs and Other Medications

(e.g. Viagra, Tetracycline)

Environmental Pollutants

A contributing factor to impaired skin physiology, particularly sei-conductors on the skin.

Electromagnetic Radiation

From wireless devices like phones, cellphone towers, wifi routers, laptops and computers smart TVs etc. (EMF).

  • Calcium efflux (leaking of calcium ions) is a principal membrane reaction to EMF exposure. This lowers sulfate levels in all cells, but especially the skin and surface arterioles where the sun hits us.
  • Calcium efflux in the central nervous system also alters blood chemistry.
  • This chronic effluxing of calcium seriously disturbs calcium levels, Parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels and Vitamin D homeostasis in the skin.
  • Calcium efflux also alters the synthesising function of certain enzymes and other biological functions. For the science geeks: Endothelial NOS (eNOS) sulfate production stimulated by nitric oxide in the presence of UVB and IR light is altered when calcium efflux occurs.

How Sunscreen May Contribute to Skin Cancer

It’s not only the chemicals in sunscreens that produce free radicals that promote skin cancer (see graph below).

Even with some natural sunscreens, when you target to block specific frequencies of the light spectrum and alter wavelengths, the end result is an altered spectrum of light hitting your skin. Not a FULL spectrum holistic light.

You can’t take out one part of the spectrum and think you’re doing it better than nature.

This stresses the cells and causes impaired skin physiology leading to skin cancer.

Note that if you can't help but be in the sun all day unprotected by clothes (best option), sunscreen can provide some protection.

Sunscreens to Use

If you are going to use sunscreen, use one that “shimmers” and doesn’t absorb into the body (causing the free radical damage).

The higher the SPF the higher risk of cancer and reduces vitamin D synthesis.

I recommend applying cold-pressed coconut oil while out in the sun. Coconut oil is sulfur-based which help absorb Vitamin D3 plus it protects. Also doing self-abhyanga will improve your skin physiology to reflect excess sunlight and absorb and transduce beneficial rays for good use.

How to Protect Yourself from Sun Burn

Shade and Clothing

Fundamental innate solution. The best protection

Improve your Skin Physiology and Tolerance to Sun

Strategically allow for sunlight to change the anatomical structure of your skin with gradual sun exposure + self-abhyanga. A thickening of the skin will occur as there is increase in melanocytes and keratinocytes and melanin pigment. This is the build-up of natural sun protection on the epidermis. Like building “Light Calluses” on your skin.

Expose Yourself to Late Afternoon Sun

If you want to build up your tolerance to the sun and expose your skin to the sun in a safer way, choose afternoon/evening sun closer to sunset. This time of sun exposure is safer according to Ayurveda and now modern science (see graph below). This especially applies for hot climates.

Note that the morning sun is also important as it provides specific beneficial rays (UVA-IRA light).

"Exposure to evening sun gives longevity."
~ Ancient Ayurvedic Slohka (saying)

Conclusions

Moderate and diligent sun exposure has positive effects and health benefits for most humans. The sun is crucial for optimal health.

(Maybe) 5%* of the population really shouldn’t expose themselves to sunlight due to their individual risk profile.

If you don’t get adequate access to sunlight you’ll need to go on more holidays or bathe in full-spectrum artificial light.

In regards to skin cancer, it all comes down to proper skin physiology and overall health.

Optimise your skin physiology with proper diet, healthy environment, self-abhyanga and good sunlight.

Optimise your health and immune system through the various practices which I share on my website.

The Sun as a Divine Healer for Optimal Health with Dylan Smith and Laura Poole {Podcast #010}

Throughout evolution, exposure to sunlight and the photosynthesis of vitamin D has been critically important for the evolution of land vertebrates. But all of a sudden in the past few decades, we have been burying the Sun from our lives while simultaneously increasing our exposure to artificial light. Could this be a foundational mistake for our health? Has the status quo's fear of the sun been blown out of proportion?

Circadian medicine won the most recent Nobel Peace Prize saying that a resolution towards chronic disease is to live in-tune with our natural circadian rhythms. Simply, 'go back to nature' is now the prescription for healing. Dylan and Laura will share how to work with the Sun to optimise your health and immune system, so you can re-establish this important and foundational human-Sun relationship.

This recording is from a talk where Laura interviewed Dylan in Melbourne in September 2018.

About Laura Poole

Laura Poole is a Vedic meditation teacher, speaker, writer and community builder. She has trained intensively over the past decade with great masters in Australia, India and the United States. Based in Melbourne, Laura shares the wisdom of Vedic meditation, Vedanta and Ayurveda, making it relevant for living in today’s world. She is a truly dedicated leader and entrepreneur in the Melbourne meditation space, inspiring people to take care of their mental and physical health while encouraging them to make a real difference in the world.

Laura is the founder of Mahasoma - a movement that is creating a new cultural narrative through the embodiment of wisdom and practice. She was also an original co-founder/co-creator of 1 Giant Mind Australia and its free 'Learn to Meditate' app.

In this Episode we Discuss:

How Dylan became fascinated and in love with the sun.

Forming a relationship with the sun.

  • Like any sentient being, we are in a reciprocal relationship. We need to reciprocally give our attention and energy in order to obtain the benefits that the sun offers.
  • Practices to form a relationship with the sun for a mutual exchange of attention, awareness and admiration.
  • Surya Namaskar: Sun Salutation, a devotional practice to Surya (sun).

Circadian Medicine - What the latest Nobel prize was won for. Circadian Rhythms: living in tune with natures cycles and your own biological cycles. This is Ayurveda 101. This had the Ayurvedic community laughing but also provided well over-due relief. The Nobel prize was won for such fundamental natural law (Veda) because the prescription for healing the epidemic of chronic disease is to live in tune with nature.

The Vedic worldview.

The sun as a sentient being and one of the supreme forms of nature.

The Personality of the Sun:

  • Very consistent: always on time, unconditionally showing up.
  • Fiery, Heat
  • Energy
  • Power
  • Generous - Gives life unconditionally to everyone.
  • Central - everything is moving around it.
  • Illuminating - allows us to see. Gives us the capability to illuminate ideas within our own mind.

The Lighting Crisis: Burying the sun from our lives and replacing this with artificial blue light.

The sun providing the body with energy by generating DC electric current and activating mitochondria function.

Receiving an Altered Spectrum of Light

The problem with sunscreen, windows and glasses - you are blocking particular spectrums of light, so the light hitting you is an altered spectrum of light that is not holistic and causes damage.

Our Mistaken Fear of the Sun

Especially in Australia. Breaking free of social conditioning, questioning science and thinking clinically.

Why the Sun Rarely Causes Skin Cancer

Dermatologists can’t explain the growth in melanoma because while melanoma is increasing, our exposure to the sun is reducing.

UFOs and Sentient Beings with Colonel Leeds III {Podcast #008}

Are humans really the only highly evolved beings on this planet today?

Perhaps consider broadening your horizon into more subtle realms and study history a bit deeper than what the norm has taught with their limited chronological compilations.

In this episode we touch on a BUNCH of various events, conspiracies, esoteric ideas, all considering sentient beings other than our human selves, and of course, other than the plants and animals we love, recognise as sentient beings and care about, o so much.

But it’s not just other sentient beings. We also explore history and historical events with a more holistic approach and with a wider lens than the close minded status quo ideology that we were taught in history class.

By the way what we talk about is all very vedic.

Veda is the knowledge governing the unity of the laws of nature and human consciousness of which yoga, mediation and Ayurveda come from.

We touch on a lot of parallels with the Veda and since we only touch on this, I urge you to check out the show notes on where I write about these aspects in more detail.

Bill has a lot to say, so this episode is really a forspisher of many ideas for you to consider, and if you want to dive deeper, you can study these further yourself and check out the show notes.

About Colonel William Leeds III

After law school Bill entered into the army around 24 years old and was active in service and reserves for approximately 24 years, including being a colonel for 6 years, which is the second highest rank after a general.

Being in the US military meant Bill could travel anywhere for free on any aeroplane. So, he found a love for travelling but then he learnt Transcendental Meditation in 1976 and learnt to travel inside.

As his consciousness expanded as he evolved, he was exposed to government’s interactions with aliens and other sentient beings. Since then, he has extensively researched the topic along with other military and government colleagues from USA and other countries.

Now Bill is 78 years old, retired and enjoys meditating and panchakarma, while still keeping up to date, researching and sharing his library and knowledge about conspiracy phenomenons.

In this Episode we Discuss:

The Roswell UFO incident, 1947
Reported in the book “Crash at Corona” (1992) by Stanton Friedman.
A saucer crashed at Roswell, New Mexico, and several alien bodies were recovered.
Bill was appointed to interview the first man who saw the crash.

Paul Hellyer - former defence minister of Canada.
The current big speaker who know a great deal as he was the minister of defence for Canada.

Alien Races:
Paul Hellyer used to count there was 51, now he counts over 81, including:

  • The Greys - most common race of aliens.
  • Anunnaki - helping our civilisation grow. Did DNA work with us to help us mine gold.
  • Reptilians

Some of the Aliens were in contact with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. He taught them how to know themselves.

Human Qualities in Aliens
Some of the races, particularly “The Greys,” have emotions and have trouble laughing. They approached Maharishi Mahesh Yogi to help with this. They reproduced through cloning and used human females to produce hybrids.

They used various communication methods, mostly by telepathy.

They have been here for hundreds of thousands of years. They are friendly. They don’t eat us.

Secret US Alien Executive Agreement

President Dwight Eisenhower signed an executive agreement with the Aliens in 1958. You can obtain the agreement documents from Stanton Friedman.

It was released by the Freedom Information Act.

A treaty force between the republican of United States of America AND [the rest is blocked out]. It was a treaty not with a country, but with something else, like the aliens.

He gave authorisation for them to uses certain bases on land and under the sea in the continent of the United States without interference. Also perhaps Antartica.

The Reasons Aliens are Here:

  • They are here to help us. They don’t want us to destroy the planet.
  • Nuclear warfare destroyed Mars hundreds of thousands of years ago. The Aliens don’t want that to happen here on earth.

The Atlantean Root Race - one of the root races as a stage in human evolution in esoteric cosmology. Root races existed mainly on now-lost continents millions of years ago.

Hanumans or Adams bridge - A bridge between India and Sri Lanka.

Dated 18,400 years ago, this was proof of an ability to build advanced technology.

Why other sentient beings are interested in and care about planet earth and humans.

Evolution process:

Akasha (space) - mineral - atoms - molecules - plants - animals - humans.

It all starts with consciousness.

We are going through that process in meditation like Vedic Meditation and Transcendental Meditation and advanced development techniques like Siddhis (a sequence of creating a perfected human with paranormal powers the way nature intended a human to be constructed and manifested).

The sentients beings intervene with human civilisation to maintain peace on earth. They have done this by:

  • Turning off nuclear systems and delivery methods. Four times in Russia they stopped the firing of nuclear weapons.
  • Aliens will shut down the current nuclear button of Kim Jong-un, North Korea’s supreme ruler. He wouldn’t be able to do it.

The main countries of the world know the aliens have been here since the 50s and 60s.

Flying Saucers

Vimanas

According to the Vedas, a Vimana is any self-moving aerial car sometimes serving as a seat or throne to the Gods, sometimes self-moving and carrying its occupant through the air. It can be a temple or palace flying in the sky.

RigVeda, verses 1.164.47-48 are evidence for the idea of "mechanical birds":

kṛṣṇáṃ niyânaṃ hárayaḥ suparṇâ / apó vásānā dívam út patanti
tá âvavṛtran sádanād ṛtásyâd / íd ghṛténa pṛthivî vy ùdyate
dvâdaśa pradháyaś cakrám ékaṃ / trîṇi nábhyāni ká u tác ciketa
tásmin sākáṃ triśatâ ná śaṅkávo / 'rpitâḥ ṣaṣṭír ná calācalâsaḥ

"Dark the descent: the birds are golden-coloured; up to the heaven they fly robed in the waters.
Again descend they from the seat of Order, and all the earth is moistened with their fatness."
"Twelve are the fellies, and the wheel is single; three are the naves. What man hath understood it?
Therein are set together spokes three hundred and sixty, which in nowise can be loosened." ("trans." Griffith)

Swami Dayananda Saraswati interpreted these verses to mean:

"jumping into space speedily with a craft using fire and water...containing twelve stamghas (pillars), one wheel, three machines, 300 pivots, and 60 instruments."

  • Scheduled into Kali Yuga there is an age of enlightenment which started on 12th of January 1975. This lasts for 10,000 years.
  • The best part of it is camaraderie at the beginning, the most exciting.
  • Peaks right at the end of it (10K years) and then go into rapid decline back into Kali Yuga.
  • To do: Let go of defective elements of your behavioural repertoire like unnecessary tenacity (fears etc.). Replace these with effective elements and allow enlightenment to come in.

Dwapara Yuga

  • Ended at Mahabharata war.
  • Purer than Kali Yuga.
  • If someone was stressed, they automatically looked that way, destruction operator dominant.
  • Good guys really good, bad guys really bad.
  • Dwa = two division of one/duality.
  • 2x longer than Kali.
  • People could drink a lot of ghee since they were 10ft tall and stronger. This is where drinking of ghee practice came from and this is where it should stay.

Treta Yuga

  • Purer than Dwapara.
  • 3/4 times longer than Kali Yuga.
  • Knower, knowing and known was bound up by one.
  • A lot of harmony. Really on cusp of Being (Absolute).

Sat Yuga

  • Almost inconceivable to us. Being/Transcendence.
  • 4x the length of Kali Yuga.
  • Can be seen in vertical time.
  • When you mediate (Vedic Meditation) you go through each Yuga. Sat Yuga is when you transcend.

Kings List

Blue Skin Humans

The skin of characters in Indian history, (aka Indian mythology), are blue coloured due to a different elemental makeup. Akasha (space) is dominant, rather than prthvi (earth).

Abhyanga + Sound Healing + Subtle Therapy

You begin with an Abhyanga: a rejuvenating full body massage incorporating medicated oils specific to your unique constitution and the season.

Abhyanga is particularly effective to stimulate and strengthen the lymphatic system, enhance blood circulation, calm the nervous system and mind and much more.

Subtle Marma Therapy

This Abhyanga is slower and more attention is put on the body’s marma points (vital points that house energy and concentrated life-force). This is a subtle therapy that is required to enliven areas of the body where deep power is stored.

Sound Healing with Didgeridoo

Finally, the ancient Digeridoo (Yidaki) may be utilised (if required) to infuse primordial vibratory frequencies into specific bodily channels and central nerve plexus's (chakras) in order to alleviate imbalances within the mind/body system and restore harmony and health.

Alchemising the Essence of Traditional Medicine with Dr. Jimi Wollumbin {Podcast #007}

Lets not only explore some of the gems, techniques and knowledge from a range of traditional medicine but let's cultivate capabilities to relate with the essence of these ancient lineages in order to heal using a more direct, holistic and powerful approach.

Set at the feet of Mt Wollumbin (Mt Warning) in the Northern Rivers of NSW at Jimi’s healing sanctuary, this interview explores traditional healing gems and techniques derived from a diverse catalogue of ancient lineages.

That is what Dr. Jimi has uniquely cultivated. An ability to cross-pollinate medical traditions then apply that in his clinic and teachings while maintaining professional sovereignty.

Jimi sheds insight into the root causes of disease by exploring deep and subtle primary wounds.

His approach is understanding and communing with the essence of a herb, a medical device, a body system, disease or a patient, in order to heal holistically. This is what makes a physician at the top of their game.

This interview is basically me picking Jimi’s brain on all cool things traditional medicine while he shares his philosophical views and approach. I also enquire about his journey of moving from tradition to tradition to cultivate his own flavour of healing while maintaining respect and authentic identity.

About Dr. Jimi Wollumbin

Whether he is presenting at the UN or at a village health co-operative in rural India, Jimi is always a highly engaging speaker, writer and educator. With 19 years clinical experience and almost as much in community development, Jimi combines his deep knowledge of holistic medicine with a passion for social causes and world health. As the social entrepreneur that founded One Health Organisation in 2005, he has since steered it to become the largest holistic and integrative healthcare NGO in the world - having distributed roughly 9 metric tonnes of medicine to hundreds of thousands of disadvantaged communities across the globe. Jimi’s private clients value his obvious passion for traditional medical practices and the way in which he combines aspects of the traditions of India, China, Tibet and Persia that continue to inspire him.

In this Episode we Discuss:

  • How Jimi got the name Wollumbin - the indigenous name of the mountain where Jimi lives.
  • Mt Wollumbin as the “Ajna” (third eye) of Australia. (6:10)

  • The qualities and nature of a leech: dark, night, yin, cool, feminine, water, flowing. (52:25)
  • Uses of leech therapy:
    • Use for something that is hot and not flowing.
    • The most potent anticoagulant known to man (hirudin).

    • Pungent taste (Katu rasa) helps with phlegmatic, kapha, leukkoria, phlegm on lungs - bronchial infection. Low agni and invisible phlegm.
    • Useful for phlegmatic psychologically and physiologically issues (similar to Kapha).
    • Immune booster.
    • Gentle enough for children to use.
  • Adrenal boosters that are stimulants in disguise vs. adaptogens. (01:15:18) - Ginseng, rhodiola, cordyceps - high doses makes them stimulates, exhausting and healing. In low doses they won’t be.
  • Adaptogens have deep tonic properties are Qi tonics and kidney tonics that form ojas faster.
  • Ashwagandha - an adaptogen whose root literally smells like a horse. Balances vata and the nervous system. The “sleepy nightshade.” (01:18:50)
  • Today’s most common health issues Jimi sees in practice: Endocrine disharmony and hormonal problems that have adrenal fatigue at their root due to flight or fight constantly turned on. (01:21:32)
  • Parasympathetic nervous system: “Rest and digest.” “Feed and breed.”
  • Digestive disorders of vata blowing out agni due to nervous system imbalance.
  • Hypothyroidism - approaching the endocrine system as a web rather than separate glands.
  • Reductionism as a problematic approach to medicine.

Immunising your Baby Effectively and Naturally with Dr. A.V. Raju {Podcast #006}

Immunising baby or child. I’m not talking about vaccinations, but practical innate interventions to not only strengthen your baby, prevent disease and infection, but for them to be the most radiant, healthy baby of the lot!

Ayurvedic master, Dr. A.V. (Krishna) Raju will talk about the importance of Ayurvedic oil massage (Abhyanga) for a baby. Then Dylan Smith will share other ways to immunise your baby through balancing the mother's health, herbs for the baby, diet, and other specific regimen.

About Dr. Vaidya A.V. Krishna Raju

The Raju Family are internationally renowned leading experts in authentic Ayurveda (the science of health and longevity).

Practicing for over 13 generations, their speciality is a most refined, accurate and comprehensive patient evaluation through Pulse Diagnosis. They also specialise in creating very effective and individualised treatments using precise knowledge and application of rare and powerful herbal formulas.

Vaidya Krishna Raju is the director and head doctor at his family clinic in Hyderabad, India, where they treat thousands of people who travel from all over the world for their expert treatment and advice for everything from prevention to the seemingly incurable.

In this Episode we Discuss:

The two most important factors for baby are bath and abhyanga (oil massage), daily.

  • Preventing Disease - With Abhyanga we can satisfy vata very easily. There are many vata diseases, much more than the other doshas. So we pacify vata from the childhood, we can prevent so many diseases.
  • Detoxifies - That is why it is important to bathe the baby after, to wash off the toxins the massage “pulled out” via lipophilic action.
  • Improves muscle and bone growth.
  • Sramapaha” - reduces exertion.
  • Improves sleep - by pacifying the nervous system.
  • Abhyanga is like exercise to a baby.
  • Sesame Oil - Improves calcium levels, bone and hair growth.
  • Regimen - After delivery give massage every day except for next 11 days.
  • Head is the most important area to massage - Strengthens the skull, prevents headaches and enhances sensory health.
  • Oils to use for massage - Ideally medicated oils, otherwise cold-pressed extra-virgin coconut oil, cold-pressed extra-virgin olive oil. Beware with sesame oil as it may cause a skin reaction or allergy depending on the baby.

Other methods of Ayurvedic Immunisation: (12:55)

  1. Balance mum’s physiology - post-natal herbs, garlic, ghee, ojas increasing foods. Just giving baby-abhyanga will increase oxytocin in the mother. Ensure proper breastfeeding.
  2. Herbs for baby - swarna prasa, shiva drops, pusya drops, swasakastank yog. (15:02)
  3. 40 days of intimacy between mum and baby.
  4. Diet - timely food, proper food introduction.
  5. Sattvic (pure) environment in the home.
  6. Bath - give after abhyanga. Lukewarm baths daily.

Ayurvedic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy

Yay! You, your friend or family member is pregnant! Congratulations. I have written this guide and am here to assist you through this exciting (and sometimes scary) period of transition and growth.

According to Ayurveda, pregnancy and delivery can be the most rejuvenating experience of a women’s life, during which every cell of the mother’s body can be transformed. Unfortunately, in the west we did not get that knowledge and mothers often pay dearly with health concerns after a pregnancy.

During pregnancy, everything that the mother-to-be touches, smells, tastes, hears and sees has an imprinting influence on the foetus. Her actions not only form various health and physiological features of the future baby, but blueprint and dwell with the unborn human for their whole life which influences their health, even through old age.

That being said, this is a time for the pregnant lady to relax, retreat and do what she desires. There should be minimal restrictions and rules (these are below). She should be treated like a queen (fellas, I know you always do) and follow her desires with little friction.

Guidelines for Throughout the Whole Pregnancy

Flood your Life with Sattva

Everything the mum-to-be does should be sattvic for both the mother and child. Sattva is a quality in us that translates to “purity.” If Sattva is increased, then so is our inner stillness, clarity of mind and contentment. Love radiates and flows in abundance, while the hormone oxytocin (also known as the “bonding/loving hormone”) is simultaneously secreting.

Recommendations to enhance sattva in her mind, body and spirit:

  • Fresh, seasonal whole-foods cooked with love is sattvic food.
  • Create a nourishing and calm environment in your home and avoid stimulating and toxic (rajasic) environments like loud music and polluted air.
  • Surround yourself with loving, like-minded people and avoid toxic relationships and people who stress you out.

Self-Oil-Massage - It is always better for the soon-to-be-mum to do self-massage rather than getting by a practitioner. If receiving a massage from a practitioner, it should be a very, very light abhyanga, without touching the belly.

Learn how to do Self-Oil-Massage here

Daily Meditation - The key to a healthy pregnancy and happy mother and baby. The foetus also absorbs her peaceful and alert attitude. Vedic meditation is recommended.

Reduce EMF (Electro-Magnetic-Field) Exposure

Wireless devices emit signals (EMF) that communicate with our mitochondria and cause mitochondrial dysfunction, which is a birth for many diseases. It also generates free radicals, dehydrates our body and thrashes our adrenal stress index. You definitely don’t want to expose your vulnerable foetus to EMFs. Mainstream medicine already knows this by restricting x-rays etc., but has not yet realised the danger of wireless devices like mobile phones, laptops, wifi etc.

Ways to Reduce EMF

  • Turn your wifi, smart TVs, mobile phone off at night and when you are not using them.
  • Whenever your mobile phone is near your body, keep it on aeroplane mode.
  • Avoid high density EMF environments that are like being in a microwave. Offices for example.
  • Purchase Belly Armour - a comfy shielding material to wear when your out and about.

Reduce Ultrasounds

Unnecessary excess radiation. Studies show they do not improve birth outcomes. Get one mid-pregnancy, at 22 weeks to check body parts.

Reduce Aeroplanes

Studies showed flight attendants had a double chance of miscarriages because of the dense radiation exposure. What more is flying is probably the number one activity that aggravates vata the most.

Sleep On Your Left Side

Best to not sleep during the day, as proper night time sleep is essential.

Listen to Vedic Chants

Primordial sounds vibrate to the foetus to enliven desired aspects of consciousness. The vedic sounds also increase Sattva in the pregnant lady. Some good chants to listen to are the Bhagavad Gita and Hanuman mantras.

Balance Vata

The major theme during pregnancy is to balance vata, the energy of the nervous system. This is because the growth of the foetus and the process of giving birth is governed by Apana-Vata, the downward moving Sub-dosha of Vata. In cases of stress and tiredness, the upward-moving vata – called prana vata – has to step in and is redirected downward to support the needs of the baby. Lack of prana means lack of joyful feelings of pregnancy, which can leave the mum exhausted, depleted, tired and even depressed postpartum.

The key to balance vata is:

  1. Warmth (warm, cooked, nourishing foods, warm climate)
  2. Regularity (regular sleep times, meal times, meditation, regular bowel motions etc.)
  3. Rest - As much as possible. Times are designated to carry out work, travel or anything that requires strain (5th an 6th month).

All the recommendations in this article balance vata.

All 3 of your doshas are aggravated by the significant transition of pregnancy.

Correcting imbalances while pregnant is much easier than once the child is born! Of course it would be ideal if the woman could balance the doshas before conception.

DIET and HERBS

Foods to Avoid Throughout the Whole Pregnancy

  • Papaya - Excess downward movement (Vata anulomana) and to much heat.
  • Pineapple - Certain enzymes which cause miscarriage and to much heat.
  • Undercooked meat (beef and pork) - A risk of contracting toxoplasmosis, parasitic disease that can infect the baby and produce many symptoms that vary from premature delivery and low birth weight, to malformations and mental retardation.
  • Raw and undercooked foods, especially leafy greens, beans and lentils.
  • Raw Fish and Seafood - includes sushi and all shellfish. Some bacteria like listeria and some parasites like anisakis can be found in contaminated seafood; they produce an intestinal infection, which can lead to dehydration. Fever and dehydration during pregnancy can be linked to abortion or preterm birth.
  • Seafood High in Mercury - The bigger and older the fish, the more likely that it’s contaminated with mercury. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) encourages pregnant women to avoid swordfish, shark, king mackerel, and tilefish. According to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, pregnant women should exceed two seafood meals per week.
  • Raw Eggs - Can be contaminated with harmful bacteria, especially salmonella, which can produce a severe intestinal infection that leads to high fever and dehydration, which can be harmful for the baby. Avoid all products that may contain raw eggs, such as homemade dressings, mayonnaise, and eggnog.
  • Caffeine - you should not exceed 200 mg per day. Caffeine is a stimulant, and it may increase your heart rate and your blood pressure, both of which are not recommended during pregnancy. It crosses the placenta to your baby, increasing its heart rate as well. This has been linked to prematurity, miscarriage, and low birth weight. A cup of coffee may contain anywhere from 150 to 400 mg of caffeine, depending on the type and brew.
  • Hot spicy foods.
  • Artificial flavours, preservatives and chemical additives.
  • Left-overs - Opposite to sattvic food (tamasic).
  • Excess honey - To heating.
  • Shodana Vati / Triphala / Laxatives - Laxative herbs that cause vata anulomana should strictly be avoided in the first trimester, and also avoided for the rest of pregnancy.

Foods to Avoid Part of the Pregnancy

  • Hing (Asafoetida) - Avoid in first trimester. Vata anulomana and sharp quality, breaks stagnation. Also no external application.
  • Turmeric - For the first 6 months. For those sensitive like older pregnant ladies and those prone to miscarriages.
  • Raisins

Indicated Diet

Other than the foods to avoid, don’t restrict yourself to much and honour cravings.
Remember, you are eating for two body types, so you should not follow a strict diet for one body type. Honour your unique cravings in moderation, especially from the fourth month when the cravings you experience are more likely those of the baby.

  • Sweet taste - It is the most sattvic or wholesome for the baby. Dates, fresh breads cooked without oils, whole grains, rice, fruits, quinoa, cooked beetroot, carrot, sweet potato, hot milk, porridge.
  • Ghee, coconut oil.
  • Hot milk - one of the most nourishing, immunity boosting and ojas building foods.
  • Kitchari
  • Almonds soaked overnight then peeled the following day.

Tips to Help with Constipation during Pregnancy

It is important to have daily morning bowel motions during pregnancy.

  • Eat citrus fruits like oranges and mandarins.
  • Pomegranate.
  • Lots of cooked leafy greens.
  • Psyllium husk is okay after first trimester, but consult a good practitioner regarding psyllium.

Morning Sickness

Morning sickness happens because the foreign body (foetus) changes the hormones and system. Some people are not compatible with this.

This does not mean you are unhealthy, in fact, it is traditionally believed morning sickness makes a baby more stronger and helps it survive.

Nausea Remedies

  • Madiphal rasayana - A fruity liquid Ayurvedic preparation that you take a small sip of whenever nausea is there. (Pictured, available at Vital Veda).
  • Citrus fruits like lime.
  • Honey + ginger.
  • Cut the skin of unripe green lemon with your finger nail and sniff it.

Month-By-Month Pregnancy Insight

First Trimester: Extra Careful

This month is the riskiest for miscarriage. Therefore follow all the rules and diet advice more strictly including lots of rest and avoiding stress, work, travel and sex.

Keep it a secret - Mainly for those who are first time pregnant or have been unsuccessful with conceiving or miscarriages. Ayurveda recommends this to avoid bad energy from external people, known as Dristi Dosha (“Bad Eye”).

Prop the foot end of your bed up 8cm to that you are on a slight tilt towards your head. This helps prevent miscarriage.

4th Month: Dhauhrda (“Two Hearts”)

According to Ayurveda, in the fourth month the foetus’s heart is endowed with consciousness and the senses are said to develop.
This month is known asDhauhrda,” which means two hearts. This is because through the arteries, the heart of the foetus is connected with that of the mother. Thus, through these vessels (dhamanis), the feelings of the foetus is transferred to the mother. The mother may feel unusual desires during this period, which are probably the desires of the child. It is advisable to give a pregnant woman what ever she desires.

During this month the women should never sleep during the day as proper night sleep is essential.

5th and 6th Month: Lenient Time

If you have to work or have sex, this is the time. During sex woman should be on their back only and do not strain abdomen.

7th Month: Nearly there

This month is in maintenance mode for a meticulous part of the pregnancy: the 8th month.

8th Month: Vital Time for Increased Rest

The 8th month is very delicate where the subtle nutrient fluid called “Ojas  that supports vitality and immunity is transferred from foetus to the mother and back and forth.
This process should not be disturbed as it can leve the baby without Ojas.
Thus, you need to get as much rest as possible and avoid what you are meant to avoid and enhance sattva.

9th Month: It's Coming!

Sukha Prasava Ghritam ("Easy to Deliver Ghee") - A medicated ghee to help prepare the body for birth and the quicken the delivery and make it smoother.
Dose: 2tsp 2x/day before meals or with hot milk. Available from Vital Veda.

Small Nourishing Enemas "Matra Basti" - Can be given every second day for women that are healthy. 25ml before sleep and retain to absorb. This is to reduce the vata, strengthen the system and nourish the foetus with another lubricating fluid that is medicated.
*Quality matra basti oil should only be used such as Vital Veda's/Raju's Special Matra Basti Oil or Deva 21 Oil.

Research studies have concluded that an easy birth is highly dependant on a relaxed mind. Thus, surrendering the process of labour is key to a quick birth, as well as meditation.

Foetus Completely Development:
This month the foetus is endowed with all characters and attains complete development. It can remember it's previous birth (purvajanma) which influences the quality of development.

How to bring on labour (if not coming)

  • Abdominal massage - Using a medicated ghee called “Sukha Prasava Ghritam” or normal ghee (inferior), apply the ghee on the stomach and massage slowly and lightly in a clockwise direction downward towards the vagina.
  • Ensure you are taking Sukha Prasava Ghritam (“easy to deliver ghee”).
  • Eat more cumin and leafy vegetables.

IT'S HERE!!

Postpartum, after the baby has exited the womb, is perhaps the most important time to implement Ayurvedic interventions and practices to rejuvenate mum and ensure proper nutrient and immune accumulation for the baby.

Abhyanga – Ayurvedic Massage

A rejuvenating full body massage incorporating medicated oils specific to your unique constitution and the season.

Benefits:

Abhyanga massage helps:

  • stimulate and strengthen the lymphatic system.
  • improve immunity and increase stamina.
  • enhance blood circulation.
  • calm the nervous system and mind.
  • activate the body’s marma points (vital points that house energy and concentrated life force).
  • promote flexibility of the muscles, tissues and joints.
  • promote softness and luster of the skin as well as youthfulness.
  • correct injuries, specifically the muscle and bone tissue.
  • regenerate and build tissues.
  • enhance positive microbiology in your body (your skin is home to massive colonies of microbes).
  • detox as the medicated oil and specific methods drives the toxins from the deeper connective tissues back to the gastrointestinal tract for proper elimination. This is why after a massage you must rest and frequently sip hot water.
  • Increase oxytocin - the loving, bonding and anti-anxiety hormone.

Abhyanga Process

It begins with a head massage, including neck and shoulders, to stimulate the central nervous system and prepare the whole body for the healing experience to come. This is followed by a full body massage with strokes selected and applied in a vigorous and rhythmic matter according to the client's constitution and imbalances.

Abhyanga Testimonials at Vital Veda

I have had quite a few Ayurvedic massage over the years, and that was the best one I have ever had, without a doubt.
~ Simon Borg-Oliver, Yoga Master and Authority.
Dylan, my Ayurvedic Practitioner of choice in Australia, is an expert at knowing how to properly move imbalances from all the tissues of the body in a very systematic way. It’s a system of consciousness moving consciousness. Dylan is a premier conscious man, and what he does with his hands is a reflection of his consciousness. He is able to move imbalances out of your body to allow it to be expelled in a proper and safe way. This method is Abhyanga. After treatment with Dylan, the body is able to release the consciousness into its fullest potential. What I experience when I am treated by Dylan is an experience of the restoration of creative intelligence of the body that then liberates the mind to be able to perform at its fullest potential.

I had the pleasure last week of experiencing my first Ayurvedic Massage with the very lovely Dylan Smith of Vital Veda. Having had all sorts of different massages throughout my years and in different realms of manual therapy industry, I have to say this was just such a unique, beautiful and nourishing experience.
