The Three Main Causes of Disease In Ayurveda

1) Misuse of intellect (prajnaparadha प्रज्ञापराध):
The term prajnaparadha is made up of two words: prajna translates as “knowledge” or “intellect”, while aparadha translates as “offence” or “transgression”.
This means doing things without properly discriminating as to whether they are favorable or harmful for the body and/or the mind.
Actions taken with prajnaparadha aggravate the three doshas and stimulate the tamas and rajas gunas allowing diseases to become established.  
2) Misuse of senses (asatmendriyartha samyoga तेषां कोपे तु कारणम्):
This term is composed of the words astmaya, which means "improper", indriya which means "sense organs", artha translating as "the objects of the senses" and samyoga meaning "to combine" or "to link". 
Asatmendriyartha samyoga is the improper contact of the senses with their objects, and results in an over stimulation or deficiency of sensory activity. Actions that perpetuate asatmendriyartha samyoga harm the mind-body and lead to an imbalance that prevents the healthy functioning of your organism. 
Being mindful of your 5 senses (pancha Indriya) is a deep-rooted ayurvedic practice that is fundamental for the balance and wellbeing of the body & mind.
The five senses are:
  • Sound (sabda) 
  • Touch (sparsa) 
  • Vision (rupa)
  • Taste (rasa
  • Smell (gandha)
3) Seasonal variations (parinama परिणाम or kala काल):
Parinama in Sanskrit means “change” or “transformation”, and kala means “time”. 
The external environment, be it the seasons or the weather can affect and unbalance the three doshas, triggering diseases in the body. Exposing the body to extreme weather conditions for which it is not prepared very often leads to some form of ailment within the physiology of the body. 
In a more general manner, this also means the passing of time itself and the effects this naturally has on the physical body & cellular decay. 

Sunglasses And The Tamas Guna

When it comes to human-to-human connection, sunglasses are an obstacle that stands in between. 
Sunglasses bring darkness, which in Ayurveda is often linked to the tamas guna (meaning trapped-light and/or dullness).

The Healing Power of The Sun

Ancient cultures all over the world revered the Sun as a mighty source of healing power. 
  • The ancient Egyptians, Greeks & Romans had a strong reverence for the sun.
      • The Romans used to even have special rooms dedicated to the absorption of the healing powers of the sun, these were called solariums.
Florence Nightingale, a famous English war-time nurse who is believed to be the founder of modern nursing, reported a finding in her practice:
  • She had patients on two wards: one that was exposed to sunlight and the other was very poorly lit. Patients in the sun-lit ward healed much faster than those in the ward with no exposure to natural light.
The recognition that all life on earth is governed by, and fully depends on the energies of the Sun

The etymology of the word "Divine"
  • It comes from the Latin word divnus which in turn has an etymological meaning that comes from an early proto-indo-european language, according to linguistic scholars, is “Daylight Sky-God”.
    • Therefore the idea of something being “divine” implies the acquisition of the properties of the sky, the heavens or that which is above us. 
    • The takeaway being that to be more divine or to be a higher level being, we should embrace the energy of the Sun (that which is above us), invite it & assimilate it into our lives

Circadian Rhythms In The Body & Their Connection With The Sun

The light of the Sun, passing through our eyes is a key variable for proper health since it triggers our circadian rhythms/cycle. 
The term "circadian" comes from two Latin words: circa, meaning “around”, and diēm meaning “day”. 
The circadian cycle or circadian rhythm is the internal process that regulates the sleep-wake cycle which repeats itself every 24 hours. 
  • This is a very intricate & extremely important process that regulates the production of enzymes & hormones all around the body and determines the availability or scarcity of energy resources that one has every day. 
Studies show that the fission-fusion cycle in the mitochondria within our cells (which in turn regulate the energy resources those cells have) are controlled by the DRP1 protein which is also synchronized to the internal biological (circadian) clock

Digestive enzymes & insulin production also being regulated by circadian rhythms.
  • Ayurveda advises that one should have a light breakfast, medium-strong lunch & light dinner
      • Ideally 4 hours before going to bed one should not eat any food. 

Hormones & Light

We have receptors in our eyes called the “Intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells” which have a specific pigment called melanopsin that absorbs certain light waves. 
  • These cells are connected to the hypothalamus which regulates all metabolic action within the body.

  • How the morning light from the sun stimulates a vast variety of hormones such as the Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), the Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and the Luteinizing Hormone (LH). 
    • THS regulate thyroid function, the FSH stimulates the gonads which produce the eggs of females and sperm in men & the LH produces estrogen and testosterone in women & men respectively. 
    • Then there’s dopamine and melatonine along with many others.

The Alpha-Melanocyte Stimulating Hormone, which is in charge of triggering the production of melanocytes in your skin and is itself triggered by the light passing through the eye.
  • This melanocytes produce melanin which is the brown pigment that causes taking.
  • When using sunglasses you are blocking the natural entry of light through the eye and therefore melanocytes are not being produced to the extent that is needed, which can in turn lead to sunburn & potentially skin cancer.
Sunglasses filter sunlight, which consequently causes the pupils to stay dilated. But blue-light is not filtered by the vast majority of commercially available sunglasses, which means that blue light still enters the now dilated and fully-receptive pupils and can damage the retina and cause lots of other issues & imbalances

Reason is the different use of sunlight. Egyptians shaved their hair in addition to praying to the sun and having hot native tans. The Persians wore big hats to protect themselves from the sun.

There was a connection between sunlight and the strength of bones. Later we came to know this as vitamin D.

Why humans are a bare (hairless skin) animals

Why did we loose our hair after evolving from apes? Perhaps so our skin could be a solar panel to assimilate sunlight.

DHA – The Most Important Fat

Docosahexaenoic acid is a type of omega-3 fat that supports brain function, eye health, reduces inflammation and risk of chronic disease, such as heart disease.

How do vegans and vegetarians get DHA?

Consider the Bazan effect discovered by Nicholas Bazan.

Two loops in our eye – one dissociates DHA and recycles it our eye. We conserve it.

The long loop connects the eye to the liver. If that gets broken liver can replenish that.

Those in artificial light + EMF loose innate DHA so will have to replenish with high DHA food sources like seafood.

There is smaller amounts of DHA in meat and dairy and the amount in plants are negligible.

Mercury in Seafood

Avoid seafood high in mercury:

  • Those high up in the food chain
  • Tuna
  • Kingfish
  • Raw fish
  • Farmed fish.

But all of a sudden in the past few decades, we have been burying the Sun from our lives while simultaneously increasing our exposure to artificial light. The 21 Herbs of Ganesh

The herbs of Ganesha

Ganesh, the epitome of the earth element, is the symbolic representation of the state of consciousness in which all obstacles are transformed into opportunities.

There are 21 herbs that closely relate to this playful and graceful elephant-headed deity.

This group of herbs of Ganesh have a low G.I. (glycemic index), they strengthen the liver, help the lymph and are good for the skin.

Interestingly, elephants mostly eat low GI foods. They also need a strong liver capacity to be able to digest the copious amount of food they eat!

The leaves of these herbs are also used in Ganesh Patra Puja performed on Ganesh Chaturthi day.

21 Herbs of Ganesh

1. Machi Patra (Artemisia vulgaris)

Main uses: For female irregularities, nervous and spasmodic affections.*

2. Brhati (Solanum indicum)

Main uses:

  • Helps with the mind.
  • Cures body aches quickly (Angamarda) - Its katu and tikta rasa (pungent and bitter taste), heating energy (usna virya) penetrates for quick pain relieving action. (Caraka, Vaghbata).
  • Kathya (helps the throat) (Caraka).

3. Duurva (Cynodon dactylon)

English: Conch grass

Main uses:

  • Lymphatic system.
  • Prevents miscarriage (prajasthapana) (Caraka).
  • Varnya - Cooling energy (sheeta virya). (Caraka).
  • Urinary system and kidney health.
  • One of the most popular plants used for Ganesh. The grass of Ganesh.

4. Aparmarga (Achyranthus aspera)

Main uses: Urinary channel.

5. Vishnu Kranta (Evolulus alsionoides)

English: Dwarf Morning Glory
Main uses: Lymphatic system.

6. Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum)

English: Holy basil.

Main uses:

  • Prananvaha srota (respiratory system)
  • Anti-Bacterial and anti-viral
  • Adaptogen – Tulsi not only helps protect the body from the degenerative effects of stress but also repairs the body from the damage done.

7. Maruvaka (Origanum marjorana)

English: Majoram.
Main uses: Aromatic, carminative, culinary.

8. Karavira (Nerium oleander)

Main uses: Helpful for the skin.

Caution: This is a poisonous plant that is hard to purify.

9. Dadima (Punica granati)

English: Pomegranate.

Main uses:

  • Pitta balancing – excess acid, reducing burning sensation (daha), helps internal bleeding (raktapitta).
  • Reduces thirst (trsna).
  • The rind is used for anti-worm and anti-parasite action.
  • Blood purifier and strengthens the heart (Hrdaya) (C.S.).
  • Digestion – inflamed stomach and intestines, relieves hyperacidity and nausea, binds loose bowels and helps with dysentery (Pravahika). Helps in spure (celiac) (Grahani), bleeding diarrhoea (raktatisara), bleeding piles (raktarsas).
  • Good for the pancreas.
  • Chardinigrahana (reduces vomiting).(C.S).

10. Nirgundi (Vitex negundo)

Main uses:

  • Excellent to balance vata.
  • Great for amavat (rheumatoid arhtirits).
  • One action is kapha-vata-hara (reduces both vata kapha). This is rare because vata and kapha are opposites and usually when one increases, the other decreases and visa versa.
  • Anti-inflammatory, pain relieving, helps in sciatica.
  • Important herb for post-partum mothers (Sutika).
  • Good for respiratory tract diseases like bronchitis.
  • Good leaf to incorporate in Patra Poultice treatment.
  • Anti-parasite (Krimighna) action due to usna virya, katu rasa and katu vipaka (Susruta and Vaghbata).

11. Jati (Jasmimum grandiflorum)

English name: Jasmine

Parts used: Flowers and Leafs.

Main uses:

  • Skin disorders (Caraka) with its bitter and astringent taste.
  • Heals and purifies wounds (Vrana Ropana and Vrana Shodana).
  • Respiratory system – opens the channels, regulated mucus in the system.
  • Aromatic and improves the sense of smell.
  • Also opens one to more subtle channels with its light and soft quality (Laghu, Mrdu Gunas).
  • Reduces all 3 doshas.
  • Helpful in disease of the eyes (Akshiroga), ears and head (Shiroga).

12. Deva Kachanar (Bauhinia tomentosa)

13. Arka (Calotropis procera)

Main uses:

  • Tumour (Gulma)
  • Anti-parasite (Krmiroga)
  • Itching (Kandu)
  • Skin diseases (Kushta) (Bhavapraksa)
  • Swelling (Udararoga) – When the aggravated vata is localised within the skin and muscles, it causes swelling in the abdomen. (Bhavapraksa)
  • Heals wounds (Vrana)
  • Asthma (Svasa)
  • The sap is the best purgative drug. (Bhavapraksa)
  • This is also the plant of Surya (sun), and used in Surya rituals.

Caution: This plant is poisonous if not purified properly.

14. Datura (Datura stramonium)

English name: Jimson weed / Devil’s trumpet / Moon flower.

Main uses:

  • Antispasmodic Respiratory Support – overcomes the spasm of bronchial tubes (M.M. Nadkarni) to relieve wheezing and tightness in the chest, helping with coughing and asthma.
  • Hydrophobia.

Caution: This plant contains toxic alkaloids that produces delirium, hallucination hyperthermia, tachycardia and bizarre behaviour. It must be purified properly. Use Oxalis corniculata in cases of poisoning. (M.M. Nadkarni)

15. Bilva (Aegle Marmelos)

English name: Bael fruit

Main uses:

  • One of the best herbs to balance vata.
  • Digestion – Enkindles the digestive fire (deepena) with its light quality (laghu guna) and heating energy (usna virya). Thus helps low and sluggish digestion (Agnimandya). Further it’s katu vipaka helps to digest ama (Pachana).

  • Improves taste (C.S.).

17. Devadaru (Cedrus deodarus)

English name: Himalayan Cedar
The sanskrit name of this very tall tree translates to “wood of the gods.”

Main uses: 

  • Many vata diseases (Susruta) like Amavata (rheumatoid arthritis).
  • Urinary diseases including diabetes (Prameha) – helps reduce kapha with its light quality (laghu guna), bitter taste (tikta rasa) heating energy (usna virya) and pungent post-digestive effect (katu vipaka).
  • Cough (kasa) – Its bitter and pungent taste is the perfect combination to remove kapha; it dries the excess mucus and therefore helps to clear the wet stagnation. Its snigdha and unctuous property loosens phlegm and facilitates expectoration helping to alleviate kapha and dry excess mucus. (A.P,I., S. Pole)
  • Digestion – Enkindles agni (Deepana) (D.V.S.) to help in weak digestion, especially associated with distention. As it alleviates vata it can reduce intestinal spasms and cramping by relaxing the nervous system and easing flatulence. Clears constipation by relaxing and lubricating the bowel.

20. Ashvattha (Ficus religiosa)

English name: Sacred Fig / Bodhi Tree
Hindi name: Peepal

Main uses:

  • Female hormone issues like gonorrhoea and STIs. Its astringency helps with leucorrhea.
  • It’s astringent quality helps with aphthous mouth ulcers and dysentery.
  • It’s cooling energy (sheeta virya) helps in skin diseases and imparts skin colour complexion (Varnya).
  • Very good for Vata diseases like Vatarakta (gout).
  • A very important and holy herb in the Vedas. Buddha acquired enlightenment sitting under this tree. One of the few trees that emit oxygen 24/7.

21. Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna)

Main uses: 

  • Hrdya ("Taking and Giving")Supports the parts of the body that "take and give" continuously. Such as the Heart (taking and pumping blood continuously). The Lungs (continuously pumping prana). Brain (receives and gives impulses), every cell in the body does this same action.
  • One of the best Medyas (substances to balance the mind). (Jaimini Brahmana 1/354).
  • Urticaria (Udarda prasamana) - (Caraka). It's cooling energy (sheeta virya) helps other skin conditions to.

Parijata – The Flower of God

Each morning at the first rays of light, the gentle skinny Parijata tree generously drops its highly perfumed, sweet scented orange-stemmed white flowers.

They fall ever so easily.
One small shake of the tree and the flowers shower in abundance to be caught by leaves, hands and the floor below.

Generally, when flowers fall on the ground they cannot be offered to Gods. However, Parijata flowers are so auspicious that they are the only flowers that can be picked up from the ground, washed, then offered.

Names:

Sanskrit: Parijata, Harsinger
English: Night Jasmine
Botanical name: Nyctanthes arbortristis

Nyctanthes = “night flowering.”

Arbor-tristis = “sad-tree” because the flowers loose their brightness during daytime.

The Mythology of Parijat: The Birth of a Celestial Tree

Mythology” symbolises states of higher consciousness, told in a legendary format to trigger a connection between oneself and the larger universe. Usually experienced in an abstract fashion.

There was a Princess named Parijat who fell in love with Surya (the Sun as a divine Being).

Surya however had a condition before marrying her that she would never turn away from him. Parijat agreed as she could never imagine going away from her beloved.

They married in autumn and timeless love caused winter and spring to fly by.

But then, the first summer for them as a married couple arrived… 

Surya’s power became so immense, it became difficult for her as even nearing him would burn her.

One day at noon, suddenly Surya appeared at her door and Parijat flinched for a second. Becoming angry, Surya’s power knew no bounds and Parijat harmfully wilted.

On coming to his senses, Surya realised his mistake and turned to the Gods (supreme aspects of Being in consciousness) for help. Gods knew how much Parijat loved Surya and they granted her another life as a Tree.

Surya (Sun) and Parijat are not able to meet each other in day light as she still cannot bear his glow and sheds her flowers.

But at night, Surya visits her and so Parijata becomes fragrant again being kissed by Sun.

  • All vata issues, especially joint problems like types of arthritis.
  • Skin conditions.
  • Respiratory System (Pranavaha srota).
  • Sweet divine aroma.

Leaf and root bark.

Remedies

Boil Parijata leaves with cumin seeds in water, reduce the water so as to make a decoction (kashayam) and drink.
